I got a bike like that a while ago and had to replace the jug. i messed up the timing chain and didnt know how to put it back together. Thank you fro making this video. one step closer to a running bike.
I am brand new to motorcycles and have this same bike just one year newer. I could not believe I found a video like this that is so simple to follow and answered all of my questions. Just as you were saying if your timing chain is too loose it will eventually wear through the cylinder, and that is exactly what happened to mine in the same spot you showed. Thank you so much for making this video and taking the time to show us how this is done. You rock
Brand new to bikes but you picked the best engine ever made for a small motorcycle.easy to maintain and indestructible if the oil is changed every 3000 miles. And the XL frame is the best trail bike ever made..either very lucky or you had great advice when choosing your bike. 😮 Ride Safe.
Very well made how to video. This is the only way how to videos should be made. I have already been through all this but I watched because, great video.
Hmm i'm in the middle of doing this but i have run into a prolem i cant undo the nut for the timing gear i don't have a rattle gun and i don't have a welder any sugestions would be appreciated
What size are the timing adjustment bolts? I'm missing them on a project I bought and so is every parts diagram I can find. I'm guessing 6mm but how long?
avec vos precieux conseils , la mécanique est plus facile. j'ai fait comme sur votre video et j'ai réparé ma xls plus rapidement qu'avec le manuel d'atelier. merci beaucoup .
At 9:00 you say "for some reason there's a pin here" - That pin is the oil passage to the top of the engine. Oil is pumped through the side cover, through "that pin," and out the top center of the head (under the cam lobes) so the cam can splash oil on everything else. WHEN YOU PUT YOUR SIDE COVER BACK ON DO NOT RTV OR SILICON THE OIL HOLE CLOSED! It looks like a bolt hole but it is an oil passage. If you RTV this hole closed, you will fry your cam, rockers, head, and head cover, I've seen it!
so my 1978 honda xl250 kicks over the engine is in decent shape. but I don't know what wires plug into what due to fact of being unplugged when I bought it. is there any way to find out
I have a question for you dave my dirt bike is getting spark and getting gas but still wont start it turns over like it should but wont do a damn thing.what could make it do this?

That pin is very important it takes oil to the head ..never forget to replace it or the camshaft will be toast

That bike will outlive your children's children if you change the oil every 3000 miles
