I've belonged to the same tabletop Warhammer group for roughly 20 years. We're a bunch of retired IT guys who get together to play 2 or 3 times a week. We used to play in the shops and in local tournaments until GW went woke earlier in the year. Now we've gone our own way. Now we play in our homes, on custom made maps, with the models we've collected over the years, and where the beer is always cold. We use whichever rule sets the group agrees upon when we play. We bought 2 3-D printers so the two guys who are graphic artist types could design new custom armies for us. We didn't even watch the Tabletop gaming awards this year. Commercial gaming companies are dead to us. Actually, our wives are quite happy, because now they spend money on their stuff instead of us dropping hundreds in the gaming shops on models every month.
Don't forget they banned me for being on your show promoting tolerance and diversity of all creeds, religions and personal views per their own motto: "a game for every table, a table for everyone."

I became disillusioned with GenCon the moment they got involved in political nonsense after the governor of Indiana signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act in 2015. It had NOTHING to do with gaming, didn't impact the convention in ANY way, but that became ALL the GenCon people could talk about.
I stopped taking my family to GenCon after I was told I could not get any service from the staff because I was wearing a shirt that supported police officers (several of whom I knew personally) that lost their lives in the line of duty. The staff said they were triggered by a shirt full of names.

(or worse, but hell of a character) Now it seems we have a new game setup based on a 1pager set of rules I wrote down on a paper during a walk in the forest (during the breaks) and we add what we like. PLEASE DON'T GIVE UP ON YOUR HOBBIES! Give up on the "political commissars and zealots and power hungry people infesting them". Now every time I order a miniature I have the "no money to them" high. Every time we setup a game I have the "lets test this idea".
Went to Gencon in the 90s. Everyone just wanted to play games. EVERYONE was welcome at the tables. No one gave a crap about politics, religion or race. All we cared about was what cool new games there were to see and play. I've got wonderful memories. I feel sorry for the younger generations of gamers that have to put up with all the activist BS.
That was during the Gen X era of people who didn't get offended by everything, had a general IDGAF attitude and just wanted to have fun with friends old and new. I had a complete blast at the only GENCON I went to many years before all of the woke garbage and wouldn't trade those memories for anything in the world.
It really needs to make a return. None of this sort of nonsense existed until the psycho psychologists took over everything and made victims out of the looney tunes.
I was wrongfully banned from Gallifrey One in Los Angeles. The board that runs it will listen to every crybaby who complains about anyone who doesn't fit their toxic entitled rhetoric. They never allowed me to appeal my case or even speak in person because to them I might as well be Johnny Depp and they are Amber Herds. I attended GenCon as a teenager in 1994, and I had always wanted to return. I'm not likely to do so now, my sights are set on the growing small cons that are springing up. The OSR have cons that are springing up all over, and they are dedicated to the roots of TTRPG's and paying homage to its creators and contributors. Check out: Gary Con, ArneCon, North Texas RPG Con, VengerCon, CleriCon, Otto Con, etc. They are smaller than GenCon by a large margin, and that's a good thing. When you weed out all the wing-nut activists you are left with a much smaller group of cool people. The kind you'd like to hang out and game with. And one of the best parts of these smaller cons is the networking that happens. This networking allows you to connect up later to play online, and connect to support and advice to start your own local game, or even your own Con. These little Cons are a big part of how Dungeons & Dragons spread back in the 70's, and the OSR is doing it again. #OSRmy

I saw Max Hardcore at the 2004 GenCon in Wisconsin while I was outside smoking a cigarette…him and the girl wearing daisy dukes were later filmed upstairs in a parking facility…I didn’t witness the filming just the initial meeting. Back in the day, me and a friend used to run games at regional gaming conventions at least 3 times a year and there were people of all races, preferences, religions, etc who went there to have fun. It is sad to hear that the cons have been hijacked by woke weirdos who seem to never be satisfied until they destroy whatever they touch. If they are following the usual script, when GENCON ends up being permanently shut due to their antics driving away attendance, they will blame the gaming normies with accusations of racism, sexism, [fill in the blank]phobia, etc.
I have never been to a Worldcon, but I have no interest in going to science fiction conventions any more because they have become very political. I have no interest in getting involved in an argument about politics or gay pronoun crap or any other irrelevant nonsense. I just want to enjoy science fiction. Also, it's fun to joke around, so if someone said "free Palestine" I'd probably say "well, if it's free I'll take some" or some such and piss him off. So I just say screw it, I'll just stay at home and read books or watch old science fiction films and television shows on DVD. But I think it would be amusing if someone invented an SJW game with actual race cards and victim cards and so on.

To be fair, I have been to GenCon for the first time the last two years, and aside from rolling my eyes at the "BIPOC Lounge" when I walked by it, I was able to just focus on checking out the booths, playing some demos and buying some great new games. Despite the entitled, obnoxious minority, the vast majority of people are just there to have fun and explore their love of games.
Because (for all that they call anyone who opposes them "fascists") these people _are_ fascists who are, by definition, totalitarians (and now, with all their "from the River to the Sea, Palestine should be free (of alive Jews)" antisemitic fecal matter, their fascism is even more apparent). EVERYTHING, every aspect of culture, must be brought under the umbrella and made to preach the Gospel of Woke, the Gospel of Socialism, the Gospel of the State. That includes tabletop RPGs, fantasy, and sci-fi, as much as soap operas, professional sports, car dealerships, heavy metal music, big box stores, and your corner delicatessen. And to that end they will invade every corner of culture and impose their screwed up version of "morality" on everyone who enjoys those corners of culture. That's why we call what they're doing a "culture war".

It's a shame. When I was a kid D&D was my social group. We cheered anyone who wanted to play. All were welcome since we weren't welcome anywhere else. I moved to Europe in my early 20s and found a group of players that became a family for many years. All at different stages in life, dreams, and aspirations. I sorely hope that gencon, wotc, or whoever it is can steer things to a place where the gamers, at least an old one like me, can be proud of.

A more real world, real history question... how do you conduct a table top wargame concerning the American Civil War, World War II, any colonial conflict from the Sepoy Rebellion, the Zulu Wars, the Mahdist Uprising, the Boxer Conflict or even Alexander the Great's conquests and avoid "hurting the feelings of those who were only removed from the real conflict by hundreds if not thousands of years?" Not to mention the Vikings...all those Nordic types ravaging all the way into Russia (which actually derives its name from the Vikings), conquering Sicily...pretty much anything with the word "Norman" connected... you get my drift.
You'd be surprised at how snow-flakey some gamers have become. I've seen tons of people who are extremely sheepish about playing any game that deals with real-world conflict / war. I saw one content creator on YT who was uncomfortable playing Undaunted: Normandy because one player had to play as the Germans.

I attended GenCon as a teenager in 1994, and I had always wanted to return. I'm not likely to do so now, my sights are set on the growing small cons that are springing up.
The OSR have cons that are springing up all over, and they are dedicated to the roots of TTRPG's and paying homage to its creators and contributors.
Check out: Gary Con, ArneCon, North Texas RPG Con, VengerCon, CleriCon, Otto Con, etc.
They are smaller than GenCon by a large margin, and that's a good thing. When you weed out all the wing-nut activists you are left with a much smaller group of cool people. The kind you'd like to hang out and game with.
And one of the best parts of these smaller cons is the networking that happens. This networking allows you to connect up later to play online, and connect to support and advice to start your own local game, or even your own Con.
These little Cons are a big part of how Dungeons & Dragons spread back in the 70's, and the OSR is doing it again.

My home which we bought 25 years ago I'm paying $2000 a year on--that's less than one bedroom apartment rent here but it's worth $1.7 million. That's an effective property tax rate of a little over 1/10th of 1%. My dad pays $10,700 a year in Texas on his house which is only worth half a million. I paid $4k in state income tax, so the difference is $4700 in my favor.
As for Kentucky, they pay an effective rate that's 10% higher than California's rate, but they pay less because doublewide trailers on less than an acre don't sell for very much.

I've always wanted to go to GenCon, but I do believe my time has come and gone. I just want to check out cool games, maybe get to play a few cool games, and see all the awesome merch and cos-play. What happened to these younger generations who don't seem to understand that just because you don't agree with someone doesn't mean you need to hate them and turn and try to destroy their lives?! I think I definitely missed the window for a fun GenCon and it bums me out.

I have enjoyed going to Gencon every year doing LARP and other activities I am kind of glad that I couldn't make this year due to finances since getting to avoid this.

I saw Max Hardcore at the 2004 GenCon in Wisconsin while I was outside smoking a cigarette…him and the girl wearing daisy dukes were later filmed upstairs in a parking facility…I didn’t witness the filming just the initial meeting. Back in the day, me and a friend used to run games at regional gaming conventions at least 3 times a year and there were people of all races, preferences, religions, etc who went there to have fun. It is sad to hear that the cons have been hijacked by woke weirdos who seem to never be satisfied until they destroy whatever they touch. If they are following the usual script, when GENCON ends up being permanently shut due to their antics driving away attendance, they will blame the gaming normies with accusations of racism, sexism, [fill in the blank]phobia, etc.

I have never been to a Worldcon, but I have no interest in going to science fiction conventions any more because they have become very political. I have no interest in getting involved in an argument about politics or gay pronoun crap or any other irrelevant nonsense. I just want to enjoy science fiction. Also, it's fun to joke around, so if someone said "free Palestine" I'd probably say "well, if it's free I'll take some" or some such and piss him off. So I just say screw it, I'll just stay at home and read books or watch old science fiction films and television shows on DVD. But I think it would be amusing if someone invented an SJW game with actual race cards and victim cards and so on.

To be fair, I have been to GenCon for the first time the last two years, and aside from rolling my eyes at the "BIPOC Lounge" when I walked by it, I was able to just focus on checking out the booths, playing some demos and buying some great new games. Despite the entitled, obnoxious minority, the vast majority of people are just there to have fun and explore their love of games.

Because (for all that they call anyone who opposes them "fascists") these people _are_ fascists who are, by definition, totalitarians (and now, with all their "from the River to the Sea, Palestine should be free (of alive Jews)" antisemitic fecal matter, their fascism is even more apparent). EVERYTHING, every aspect of culture, must be brought under the umbrella and made to preach the Gospel of Woke, the Gospel of Socialism, the Gospel of the State. That includes tabletop RPGs, fantasy, and sci-fi, as much as soap operas, professional sports, car dealerships, heavy metal music, big box stores, and your corner delicatessen.
And to that end they will invade every corner of culture and impose their screwed up version of "morality" on everyone who enjoys those corners of culture.
That's why we call what they're doing a "culture war".

It's a shame. When I was a kid D&D was my social group. We cheered anyone who wanted to play. All were welcome since we weren't welcome anywhere else. I moved to Europe in my early 20s and found a group of players that became a family for many years. All at different stages in life, dreams, and aspirations. I sorely hope that gencon, wotc, or whoever it is can steer things to a place where the gamers, at least an old one like me, can be proud of.

A more real world, real history question... how do you conduct a table top wargame concerning the American Civil War, World War II, any colonial conflict from the Sepoy Rebellion, the Zulu Wars, the Mahdist Uprising, the Boxer Conflict or even Alexander the Great's conquests and avoid "hurting the feelings of those who were only removed from the real conflict by hundreds if not thousands of years?" Not to mention the Vikings...all those Nordic types ravaging all the way into Russia (which actually derives its name from the Vikings), conquering Sicily...pretty much anything with the word "Norman" connected... you get my drift.
You'd be surprised at how snow-flakey some gamers have become. I've seen tons of people who are extremely sheepish about playing any game that deals with real-world conflict / war. I saw one content creator on YT who was uncomfortable playing Undaunted: Normandy because one player had to play as the Germans.
Are there any conventions out there that aren't infested with hypocritical rhetoric or do those just not exist. I always wanted to go but never had the chance.
