1971 Tamiya 1/35 Panzer Kampfwagen III Ausf. M/N, Military Miniatures Series Kit MM111
Sometime back in the 1970’s, Dad purchased MANY of these models, having found them marked down at a local Toys "R" Us, and he built several. The kit allowed for some modifications so you could build the version you wanted. The first one he fashioned to look like the cover of the "Signal Armor Number 1 Panzer III in Action" book he had, painting it gray with the shorter gun and no side skirts. The second one was done in desert camouflage with the longer gun and armor.

I built this kit, 1972…
Painted it AUTO PRIMER GRAY
then I camouflaged it…
I was 12 years old, what did I know…
But, it got me into TAMIYA KITS…

These two were the last versions build of this tank, the one with the short 7,5 cm. howitzer (the same on early PzIVs) was sold in some numbers also to Italy, to replace our losses in N: Africa, but seems that weren't operative 'till the armistice. Beautiful model, for its age was very detailed, and was anticipating the high quality of the future Tamiya's kits.

Now, THIS is a great, classic kit, with good details, plenty of accessories, figures, and building options!
I wish Tamiya would bring this Old-School kit back for a reasonable price. If they do, I plan to modify it into a Panzer III Ausf. N SKI Schienen Ketten Fahrzeug, with the retractable railroad wheels. This solid kit would lend itself well to such a conversion a lot better than today's hyperdetailed $50.00 - $70.00 Panzer III's.

I've never heard of that one and had to look it up. Luckily, I found a TH-cam video of it. :-) That's definitely a unique machine and I hope you make a model of it!

I hope I'm able to build one, too. The Panzer III Ausf. N SKI Schienen Ketten Fahrzeug has been on my bucket list for the past 25 years, but not too much information is available online. It's my understanding that only about three conversions were done IRL. I do have a Dragon Panzer III Ausf. N set aside for the project in my unbuilt stash. But with my luck, halfway through the build, MiniArt or Roden will come out with a highly accurate Panzer III Ausf. N SKI Schienen Ketten Fahrzeug kit based on the actual factory plans.
Actually, I'd rather use the Tamiya kit you featured here. To me, this conversion project is better rendered as "a pencil-sketch on notebook paper," rather than as "a masterpiece rendered in oil on canvas." The simpler Tamiya kit from the 1970's would suit this purpose a lot better than the Dragon kit.

Good video!!! Built this kit numerous times in the 1990s when was getting back into modeling while battling alcoholism. There is a hobby shop in Indianapolis, IN, that specializes in these ancient Tamiya (and other brands) kits, but they do ask a pretty penny or two for them. I always try to visit that shop whenever am in the area and sometimes will talk myself into buying a kit or two, not that I really need them added to the stash.

I'm glad you liked it! That's great you have a store you can visit. Unfortunately, where I am in Maryland, there are no hobby shops that carry older models and only Hobby Lobby carries new (and not that many.) Dad said when he was in the hobby 50 years ago, there were places to buy models everywhere.
