You may find the inner disk (needle side) is aluminum and works on induced eddie currents as apposed to direct magnetic coupling (steel disk).
    Big Thumb Up.

Mike James that is a very good point!, I will have to look at it again :D

Aussie50 In the Netherlands and Germany we call that wervelstroom. Rotary disc KWh meters work on that same principle.

+Mike James yep or it would be working the opposite, the slower it went the more it would be connected! +1 for the updated science!

Very interesting! Very little failure rate in these old mechanical meters as well. As long as dust or water doesn't get in, they'll keep working forever!

Nice little reveal there at the start about how you first looked inside a speedo at a young age.Would be interested if you were to give us more little snippets like that. Who was an early influence in your life? What was the fascination with mechanical things? Something got your gears turning. I enjoy most of your vids. The electronic stuff leaves me behind.

On the older Jaguars you often know when the tacho-meter is mechanical when the pointer starts at the lower right hand side. This avoided to have a gear rotation change in the tacho.

Since there's a plug on that wire I wouldn't be surprised if they just had those on the shelf as ready-made units (with the bulbs and wires pre-installed), so they could just grab them and toss them in without having to muck around with putting bulbs into holders and such.

On the video of my cluster repair, I had to reply to a comment to tell people it's only illegal to mess with the odometer in the goal to "misrepresent" (lower) actual Kms. It's totally legal to change the mileage of a odometer, if you are taking a used one to put in your car for instance.

The moving magnet induces an electric current in the conductive non magnetic disc, the current induced in the disc also produces a magnetic field which drags or pushes the disc around. The greater the difference in speed the more currents/magnetic fields/force produced. Eddy currents.

Great video, the autopsy videos are my favorite.

Takes me back to my childhood too, when I took apart my motorbike speedometer!

some tach meters for agri use were built like that except that they somehow had the mileage parts calibrated for hours for maintance use

It's fun when these fail (such as the magnet falling out or losing it's magnetism) and the needle just waggles about in there vaguely pointing at a number on the speedo that could be the right speed, or not... :P

***** A wiggly speedo often times has a cable that needs lubrication.

The old English made Smith meters had large magnets in them It works upon the Eddy Current principle.

RODALCO2007 on my old tractor i have SMITHS gauges. the water temperature gauge is stuck and won't move at all

My 97 suzuki vitara uses a very similar design, except it also uses a reed switch over the magnet side to give a pulse signal to the ecu.

Ahh a good old and reliable design, i havnt seen too many go wrong.
Older motorbikes have the same idea but smaller :-D
I do prefer older tech as im an old bastard ha ha :-D

    "Out of a Landcruiser 78"
You'd be closer if you said 75, that had a cable-driven speedo whereas 78 was electric.
This is a 60 series speedo, and there are no 60 series "pickups", and consequently nowhere for guns to be mounted to.

Ed, I did a little Google-Fu, and It looks like that speedo is out of a FJ60 Series Landcruiser. I actually have an uncle that has an earlier FJ40 (a 1980 model if memory serves me correctly), that was affectionately dubbed "The Bumpy Car"

I thought the "60kph=637RPM" was for calibration IE at 637 rpm input the speedo should read 60kph

TopGear tried to kill a Hilux and they were unsuccessful... even when they put it on top of some hi-rise flats which was then promptly blown up!

Please make a follow up explaining how the odometer works! Can't work it out as the needle doesn't move. Does it run off the cable, geared down?

    • @Aussie50
      @Aussie50  9 ปีที่แล้ว

Matty Maidment the odometer is run off the input cable, I showed the little worm drives that drive it. its just a very low reduction drive

Aussie50 will the odo go down if you reversed the direction of the drill? it doesn't look like there is anything to stop it?
