I got all excited when i watched this video, i have a PS1 sitting gathering dust and i am looking for a console to be an retro emulation monster! Can't find this kit anywhere :(
It’s amazing how powerful this raspberry pi is to play any game on ps1, meanwhile Sony themselves can’t get good emulation for their PlayStation Classic.
Reports were that the PlayStation Classic was essentially a stripped down Pi (IIRC Pi 2 or similar hardware) running a weaksauce build of PCSX-Reloaded. Once the thing was hacked, however, the replacement improved the device's capabilities significantly.
Yeah the hacked version is a surprisingly decent emulation machine 'almost' comparable to a Pi 3. It's also extremely easy to hack, requiring only a USB stick that doesn't alter the original config. I picked one up brand new for £25/$34. Probably worth at least that just for the cool PS1 shell. I should have picked up a few more at the time cause they've shot back up in price again since.
Retroflag already has a PSX mini case called Retroflag Station Case for Raspberry Pi 4. You can get it with or without the little LCD screen. It looks great and super easy to assemble.
I think this is really cool!! But, if the person that did the 3-D printed parts would just make a 3-D printed PS1 case….maybe without the unnecesary plastic inside mounting parts which might give the cables a little more room….then he could sell the WHOLE thing as a kit and that would be super “wicked”!!! Esp if that person made the case for the RasPi4, and maybe even made a correct way to mount a cooling fan, that would really be “wicked” and you wouldn’t have any “brain farts” in the process of assembling it. YEEAAAHHHHH!!!!! ;-)
100% agree on this 👊😉 Annnnnd it would also save a classic OG system for the future and keep it original. I love modding but couldn't do this to my old PS1 OG lol ...printed for sure !
Wow, this kit has been around for 4 years at least, and this is literally the first TH-cam video of it in action that I've seen (minus the kit creator's building manual of course). I've had the same PiStation for several years, and though there were other console-shaped cases, I chose this one because it's inside the original PS1 and holds so much necessary sentimental value for me. The only thing the kit could have added is some kind of internal HDD bay - a good PS1 roms collection would need all the space it can get.
totally agree, just stick an old laptop HDD in there and you could have hundreds of gigabytes for games. it'd be nice to see one incorporate the laser drive and original controllers so it could be played like an original too
This is good. I did the same thing to bring into jail ( Canada ) cause you could only bring N64 or PS1 are latest consoles. I modded and brought inside. Had 8000+ games I converted the controller ports so I was able to use actual PS1 controllers, and used HDMI to RCA converter so it would use RCA in back of console. Even made power button work with it. It was work of art really
Why not just put in one pair of usb ports on the left (leave the OG right controller port in for aesthetics) and plug a USB Bluetooth dongle in to one of the ports and use cordless controllers? Also, without that nest of USB cables inside, you'll have better airflow.
Did this exact same project about 3 years ago, We were about to cut the original Playstation Power supply PCB in half and solder it to a step down converter, we kept the original power switch too. Fun little project. Had a heck of a time finding those USB extensions though.
This is really cool stuff, but one of these days I hope there’s a build that retains the original controller and memory ports + optical drive, maybe with some shell scripts thrown at the software for working with real PS1 discs or CD-R backups
one could simply buy a(2 ) ps1 usb adapter for the controller and/or memorycard ports and then solder it to the original controller/memory card ports inside the ps1 to retain it... I've done it myself a long time a go with a banana pi... but as for the optical drive i don't really have a real solution other than maybe dissemble a optical drive for a pc and replace it with the original optical drive inside the ps1 and hook it up with a ide /sata to usb adapter maybe... That could work especially if one had a 3d printer with some 3d modelling knowledge/experience.
@@MrFlapTrack That would most likely be the way to go. Imagine having a PS1 raspi that “just knows” how to handle discs like the original console, and boots to a custom (PS1 BIOS-inspired) menu when the drive is empty, so you can run games off microSD as well. All the pieces are out there, you’d just have to fit them together and maybe do a bit of programming to smooth out the edges
This is cool. I had hoped it was a pre-built case kit when I saw the thumbnail, but still really cool. I reckon you'd be able to fit an optical drive in there, to expand on the usability (although I've zero experience and don't know for certain that Pi's can accept optical drives).
Maybe that could be possible with external disk drives ? You know the ones with USB connection, i bet it would be recognised instantly as linux has broad support-drivers for many devices. If you could tear down one and place it internally and then screw it down... hmm

I like it, but if you have a psx around I would suggest to go for an optical drive emulator instead, I believe that would give you better compatibility while still running on the original hardware, otherwise just 3d print or get a psx case for the pi
This is a really cool idea and I enjoyed the video. Would have been good to touch more on the mods to install the pi4 in place of the pi3 though, but that's not a big deal, I reckon most viewers could guess fine. That being said, I have some thoughts because there are parts of this kit that make no sense to me or could have been executed better by the person who made the kit. Like it's a great idea, especially if a dead ps1 can be found cheaply, but there were so many missed opportunities to make this a better product and a cleaner, easier and more capable install. 1. would have been nice if the usb port panel was painted to match the ps1 grey - I know getting a colour matched filament for printing would be near impossible, but it wouldn't have been hard for the maker to spray paint them before assembling the ports into the printed piece 2. same goes for the power, micro sd and hdmi port covers, but less important than the usb panel being on the back 3. including some double sided 3m tape for the corners of the pi bracket that do not have screw posts would have made it more secure for little money 4. including a small usb3.0 hub board wired directly to the 4 usb ports on the front panel, with a single usb 3.0 right angle connection to one of the pi's usb 3.0 ports would be much cleaner with 1/4 of the cables! Considering only controllers or a single usb stick or portable ssd/hdd are likely to be plugged in, there would be no bottleneck issue with splitting a single usb 3.0 port on the pi into 4 via a hub. 5. Using a hub as per my idea above would allow the second usb 3.0 port and perhaps one of the usb 2.0 ports to be extended to the back of the case. On a ps1 with the big parallel port on it, a panel could be inserted there to hold the usb port extensions. That would be nice to connect a wireless dongle for an 8bitdo controller or a portable drive for more or faster storage, while keeping the front looking clean as stuff would all be plugged in the back side, as is the power, hdmi and sd extension. For models without a parallel port, the hdmi could be swapped to micro hdmi to allow a usb port to fit on the same panel that the full size hdmi is currently on. It might also allow connection of a usb 3.0 external slimline dvd drive. Assuming drivers could be sourced for the pi (which to be far is a big if), it could allow ripping your ps1 and other disc based games on the pi system. It would be easy enough to do so on another machine and then transfer the iso's to the pi system via usb stick or ssh over wifi, but still might be a cool idea. 6. I don't understand the idea behind the power supply at all - it all feels very unnecessary - 5v to 5v on a board with a manual fan controller - why? a type c extension cable and panel would have been fine - the official pi4 power supply will provide 5.1V 3A and could be used to power a pi3 with a type c to micro usb adaptor for a few cents 7. Does that crazy psu and power button setup have safe shutdown? An argon40 fan shim can be had for under $15 (I know it is $16 AUD when I bought mine), and that includes a (tiny) power button, with safe shutdown and a script controllable fan, all packaged on the one tidy shim. The power switch on the argon can be desoldered and extended with some cleanly routed wires to the power switch that comes with the kit, with the led with the kit wired to 2 gpio pins on the pi so that it gets power when the pi is on. It would be a much cleaner cabling setup 8. It looks like there is room in there for a usb 3.0 to m.2 board and m.2 ssd. One could be harvested from an external enclosure or bought from ebay/amazon/ali. That would allow plenty of space for roms and faster boot and game load times. Even a 128gb drive would be heaps of space for this use case, and they can be had for like $30 nowadays.
I loved the Raspberry Pi 4B so much that I got all three versions. I like the Pi 400 but my favorite is the Raspberry Pi 4B 8GB in the Vilros keyboard/touchpad hub. I just like having a keyboard.
I get buying a 'broken' Playstation to do this but is it really forever 'Broken'? I couldnt bare to give up on a classic and tear up its guts after what i thought was its death. But is it really? To me its like violating a body once they pass. Only in this case i would still hold hope the remains can be revived.
a ps1 with a pc in it. running android tv but also playing games on windows or linux so you can use it with from the couch. a working disk tray would make it so fucking cool lol.
I like this but would like to see one utilising a disk drive and playstation controller input, so its still possible to use it like an original playstation 1
It's a shame the internal wiring is such a mess, maybe the cables could be supplied shorter? Regardless I think this is a project I'll be tackling this year 👍

a ps1 with a pc in it. running android tv but also playing games on windows or linux so you can use it with from the couch. a working disk tray would make it so fucking cool lol.
Where did you find the PlayStation parts?
where do i get the wires and the 2 usb slot replacements?
I like this but would like to see one utilising a disk drive and playstation controller input, so its still possible to use it like an original playstation 1
There must be a way of coding the raspberry pi to control the disc drive, the original controller ports.
It's a shame the internal wiring is such a mess, maybe the cables could be supplied shorter? Regardless I think this is a project I'll be tackling this year 👍
Dude, this is dope and you gave me an idea for a spare shell I have. Do you sell kits or have a list and the #d print files available? You could have used the Xstation SD extension and 3D print that replaces the Optical Drive to load cards on top from the dis bay.
49cents and you can make that reset button work as a real reset with gpio controls
That would be cool 😅
What about buying a RetroFlag PiStation straight away?
I handmade.mine with a Pi2 long ago... It uses original PS1 controllers and as it is the Pi2 does not get hot at all
This is really cool. Might actually do this myself!
Love the Dutch Accent 👌
Is there anyway to have all the PlayStation 1 games loaded onto the pie 4?
Would it not be better to just buy a ps1 case for the raspberry pi. be smaller and easier
where do i get this kit? i already have a ps1 and raspberry pi 4
The SD card that you used for in the video, can it be bought from one of the links you provided in the description? Please advise which SD card was it if you do not mind as I want to build this also and mend it into a PS2 slim console
You could have just bought a ps1 case for the Pi. They make them you know. And theyre actually way smaller than this thing.
Given I acquired 9 empty Playstation 1 cases a couple of years back for under £10, I have no shortage of shells to use for this kind of thing 😀
I WANT ONE FOR A PSONE SLIM 😍
