Hey I am 60 years young and remember buying the original PlayStation for my kids however, i also really enjoy messing about with raspberry Pi's too, so when i found your channel by pure chance and then learned that Sony had released this PlayStation classic, i was really intrigued! (OK, it's my age, but now i know it exists...cool!) Anyway watching what you did was so inspiring I've gone ahead and and bought a classic for £26 (now you know where i am from!) and have a Pi B3+ here ready to do the build! Thanks for your very inspirational and informative tutorial, you have a new subscriber! PS keep up the good work!
When you cut the board, I thought that this will be some tutorial parody or a symbol of how big BS was Sony's approach to the retro console market (well, actually that part might be true). Never knew that you can recycle a dead PCB like that. Which proves that the *Right to Repair* movement should be officially recognized worldwide, considering how much e-waste could be saved in similar ways. Also, nice project! This was an entertaining and very educational video.

Just got the PS1 Classic for 35 bucks the other day. It's adorable. And the controllers are WAY more comfortable that I remember the OG skinny boy controllers ever being. I even have zero complaints about the game selection (well, all but Super Puzzle Fighter. That game is on goddamned EVERYTHING. Its slot would have been better suited to something else) It's just.....missing SO. MANY. GAMES. I have over 90 on my 3b right now, with many more to be converted from PBP files and put on there. Well, if I'm gonna put that many PS1 games on it, it needs to not be in the Super Kuma 9000 case it resides in currently. And hell, I've been meaning to find a reason to buy a 3b+. So, not only did your video confirm my suspicion that a diet Pi3 would fit in the case, buy also that the console power/reset and eject buttons could be utilized. I just never imagined it could be done with such finesse. Such gusto. Such goddamned perfection. I thank you Sir. From the bottom of my geeky little heart. You are proof that not all heroes wear capes. Unless you do actually wear a cape. In which case I would say only the BEST heroes wear capes.

is there any official word as far as a rough release date? im sure its a matter of time with the classic being a bit of a flop driving the more casual emulator fan to take the extra step to piece something better together themselves
Nice Job I bought a three of these with a the tarrget coupon for $38 each. Already have psc classic modded workign wtith a usb hub expanded storage and second controller working. so a ton more games :) I do have a Pi3 that is modded on a regular ps 1 shell I found in a flea market a couple months back. They had 3 so I bought them all one works the other two kind of work but it was only $40 for the set . Glad I found this channel
Wow Great Project and Video! i actually watched the whole vid from curiosity and i dont even have a raspberry pie and im flattered. but much respect for you putting up this project it looks very difficult especially the Soldering part i myself cannot even do it.
This is the second such video of this type that I've watched and I have to say, you young guys are so impressive, where on Earth did you all learn all this shit? Seriously... Are you guys engineers or something? Watching your videos I feel like a complete idiot! Mad respect for what you guys do! it's beautiful to watch, even though I had no clue about half the stuff you were talking about oh, don't get me wrong I'm not an idiot I kind of understand what you're doing even though things got very technical, but wow, very impressive stuff!
Now you need to hook up a USB based card reader to the memory card slots. That would be awesome. Even if it was only for MicroSD and not an actual memory card.
This is amazing. I built a DMM from a kit at age 16 and have installed several APEX'i VAFC and VAFC Neo fuel controllers in Honda/Acura cars. Beautiful work man

Amezing and great mod, but even more amezing is how you killed the psx mini board but still use it to also (symbolically) became part of the raspbarry pie, by using it for ground, led light ,usb connections and for power. Just incredible. Now show this to sony and tell them how psx emulation is really supposed to be,haha !!
But that wasn't the point of the video. He decided to buy PS1 classic with his OWN MONEY and mod the case and board so it can be used as PI casing that works. The big power button works, the front USB work etc etc. If you would buy PS1 case for raspi then you wouldn't have the button nor the front usbs.
I just bought all the mini versions if each consoles, gutted them out and turned them into mint containers. Threw away the electronic boards, everything.
This is a great quick fix for adding more games. I perfer moding the kernel and creating my own setup using the current hardware. That is still going to take some time to get ironed out but it will be great once finished. There will be someone out there that gets it done much faster than I will.
If you think about it, the PS Classic came out at 100 bucks, if you spend the money or the 30 dollar Classic, a 40 dollar PI, and a SD card. You're looking at the same amount or a little more for a better option.
This makes me want to go buy a second PS Classic, and a second raspberry pi to do this... I already have one of each, and it's just me I want to keep one of each stock :p But yeah, this is awesome!
The raspberry pi allows you to play more games, use different controllers with analog sticks so you can actually play racing games properly (wtf, sony?), play games from different consoles, get better performance, lets you chose different regions, so you can use 60 hz games instead of 50 hz games for fighting games where 10 fps can make a big difference. Basically it fixes everything that was wrong with the playstation classic ánd adds other emulators. It's awesome.
@@NLXtrem I knew they added functionality by hacking it, but I assumed the processor was just too slow and performance was still quite shitty. But I haven't tried it/
I've already done all the soft mods to my psclassic, but I'm VERY tempted to try this, (though I'm not very confident in my ability to not fuck it up) if the classics drop to below $35 on the regular, I just might give this a shot on a second system, other than that I'm probably just going to build a full size acade cabinet for my raspberry pi whenever I get it.
I don’t know if it’s still going on, but I’ve seen people that were able to use the target cartwheel app discount to get a PS Classic for $27.99. Thanks for your comment!
I'm amused by all the complaints about "mutilating" the boards and case. That's how modding is done. I'm sure a lot of you fawned all over the old school portable console mods throughout the years. Guess what? You had to do the same thing.
I modded my PlayStation with the chip that needed 6 wire soldering a bit of shrink and a double-sided tape, still works today, still as legal* as what this guy is doing, but this type of mutilation of hardware for aesthetic I would not feel weird playing emulators on my pi modded to work inside my pc case or even as intended those bar type MDF boxes with arcade buttons and a Joystick, maybe with hepatic feedback for an extra joy(vibe)stick.
It applies differently here because basically all he's doing is making the PS Classic a case for the Rpi. Kind of stupid even with the price of the things having been just cut to $60.
It doesn't apply here. It's still modding it. It still has the same emulator that was used on the classic. The case still functions. It's a pretty solid mod.
I... am kinda saddened by the mangling of the PS Classic for this. thats a $75 to $100 case... I think it's cool as hell, but, I'm sure with a little 3d printing of some simple brackets, and such, mounting switches and other necessary parts in the case to keep the buttons working would be easy enough without needing to mangle the PS classics mainboard. Leaving that as a spare part for when the hacking scene gets farther along on the PS classic, to the point we can have a use for it.
I completely agree with you, I was thinking you can get PCB with micro USB, front USB and tact-switches made for $10 tops, or just use a perfboard, no need to cut board which is perfectly fine.
@@darrelwilson HOW he did it is a cool use of salvaged tech, if it was a salvage case. If this had been a broken console that had juice or something spilled into it and it was broken and no longer viable sure, salvaging the still usable parts of the board, the ground plain and the usb ports, no biggie, but literally taking a $100 MSRP item, and mangling it to make this, just rubs me the wrong way, especially with hacking the system being so easy, and only a matter of time till we'll have more functionality and a smoother experience all together with it. I applaud his engineering, and fitting a Pi3B+ into the case and leaving it visibly unchanged from the outside is great. Maybe it's just my wallet speaking, but it seems like such a waste.
Yes I agree, (even though i paid less for 1) but if you have a friend who has one, have someone 3D scan there and get it printed. I'm thinking of getting a .st out there of the classic. Not that I mind retro pie versions but their bulky. So if anyone here is techy in the 3D printer world, get together with someone and get the case scanned and printed and send the st file out there
@@RedMageGaming the games on the classic run like shit whether you hack it or not. There are more viable options for the cost, but the purpose of these mods are for novelty. If you were really concerned about cost, you wouldn't be looking at the PS Classic anyway
I'm an oil and acrylic on canvas artist and this video is a master piece, I have the patient and talent to do this. Great job by showing the steps, forget about the negative comments, even if you giving money away parasite will always comment bad things... I'll share your video to all my art fans and friends.
Look it boots up and says ps classic witch must mean he is using a ps classic emulator but the raspberry has not store functions and the emulator boots up to menu so he could not of Hide the text so it is a fake how has no one realise this.
I've ordered a gamebox 128gb for the ps1 mini, which features multi-platform roms. It's more or less like what the raspberry pi does, but it's just a USB stick with autobleem and games already pre installed on the stick. Only £18.
you should I also have a classic and an unused Raspberry pi so considering doing this mod to it. the Stock classic is just meh for it's lack of games and just no way to add more to it. doing this will add alot more (granted you have to get the roms)

Adric Howkins if you watched the video or read the comments, you would know that he used parts of the ps classic.
Awwww Shit, Now You Tell ME???
Naw, Engineers just ensure we have too many xenomorphs.
i knew someone would do it sooner or later!!!
the best part of this DIY is "I don't need this part so I just need to destroy it right?"
truly my spirit DIY
This is pretty damn cool! I'd just go the safe way and buy a PS1 case designed for the Pi.
That mini table saw made me to subscribe 😂😂
Would u sell something like this if i was wanting to buy 1?
That'd net him some very serious jail time.
That rasperry pi thing puts all those games on the ps1 ? I dont get it brotha
Truly love your work. So inspiring! The neat and technic is just PRO. I could say you have modded your mind somehow LOL
PlayStation Classic is 20$ at Best buy right now :) time to try this
also 20 at walmart and target.
Right! I bought 2 of them yesterday
I already have one of each, and it's just me I want to keep one of each stock :p
But yeah, this is awesome!
I will never do that but this video is very interesting. Hope someone will sell it on Amazon lol
Wow... is there anything a Raspberry Pi can't do? Great clip man. A+
I dont understand
What changed after putting rasberry pie
Pls explain it to me im so confused help
Then it's basicaly a case for your Raspberry Pi but since then hackers have hacked the PS classic and you can now install a lot of emulators and stuff
@@OttosTheName That was true at the moment of the video but now you can do all that with a hacked ps classic
@@NLXtrem I knew they added functionality by hacking it, but I assumed the processor was just too slow and performance was still quite shitty. But I haven't tried it/
Too bad most people dont know how to solder and mod their own. Great instructional video man.
@@dnik117 It's HAPTIC feedback ;-) hapatic means relating to liver :D
My Commodore 64 got modded in 1984, drille a hole in the case to install a reset switch. Still have that machine
I may and I may not try this, but I love this video. Thanks!
Great video. Pretty informative and I enjoy your commentary.
I... am kinda saddened by the mangling of the PS Classic for this. thats a $75 to $100 case...
I like how he did it.
Pretty sure this his way hasn’t been done and it’s great that he’s bringing this to a new level
Only £18.
0:56 *complete silence*
Couple seconds later
"Heh, I'm retarted" 🤣 great build though!
Now my walmart has a butt load of these for $20 I wanna try this. Thanks for the video.
you should I also have a classic and an unused Raspberry pi so considering doing this mod to it. the Stock classic is just meh for it's lack of games and just no way to add more to it. doing this will add alot more (granted you have to get the roms)
Just buy a loaded stick. Autobleem
You have gotten to use a push stick when operating the table saw to safely cut the stock or the board in this case!
