Doc Severinsen was a member of "The Tonight Show" band, which was led by Skitch Henderson when this program was originally broadcast. Severinsen was promoted to bandleader in 1967.

I love that jazz bagpipe... oh, but then I love the music produced by bagpipes. One of my favorite musical sounds. Well done Mr. Harley & Band!

Growing up in the Presbyterian Church, I learned a few Scottish jokes. One of my favorites were that the pious Scots believed that suffering was good for the soul so they invented golf, then they invented the bagpipes so they could share the suffering, then they invented Scotch whiskey so they could forget golf and the bagpipes.

Part Scots myself and I always doted on "cheap" Scots gags, e.g., the one about the Scotsman who angrily wrote to an English paper that had been featuring "Scotch" jokes: "If you dinna cease printing these lies about the Scottish people, I shall hereby be forced to stop borrowing your paper!"

Man--you KNOW this is old when no one has heard of Doc Severinson yet! (And I don't care what anybody says, you can play anything you want on the bagpipes, but it STILL sounds like you're gutting a live cat!)

It's so funny, looking back, to see there was actually a time when anyone in America HADN'T heard of Doc Severinsen! LOL

According to Cliff Clavin, it's a little known fact that Contestant #2 later took on a Japanese business partner named Bishi.

Extra episode today, just doing a bit of catch-up and housecleaning. The prior version posted of this episode was missing audio for the last few minutes, so I'm replacing it with a non-glitched copy.

1:00 I voted with the others; the only one who knew all the answers. And the real one said "I don't know" for most of the questions; then turned out to be a terrible bagpipe player playing out of tune 6:52 10:00 I guessed this one right based on looks alone 17:25 I got this one right too; the student was so obviously not it. And Bud actually asked a few questions at the end...a rare exception!

There is not an instrument in the world that has a more horrible sound than a set of bagpipes. I would rather start up a diesel engine and listen to it run.

Horny Orson Bean. Always making comments to the ladies. Peggy was always known for her who, what, when, and where style of questioning. Barry Goldwater used to live about a mile from me at one point and he had his ham radio antennae on a hill next to his house. It was huge. Bud was a true professional.

Beats me why you would want to use an instrument that can ONLY play a C major scale in jazz! He can't even play the song properly because it's in a minor key.
