FIRST ROUND: “girl in the British serial in boots and black leather" was Cathy Gale played by Honour Blackman in The Avengers, with Patrick Macnee, she later became Emma Peel played by Diana Rigg. Radiodefusion - I think Kitty was referring to Rediffusion a UK TV company.
I'm English, was a Mod in the 60's and watched Ready, Steady, Go, never heard her being called Queen of the mods. The female Mods followed the fashion of Mary Quant, that who I thought was on the programme when the title read Queen of the Mods.
Could you clear up something that has been confusing me for years? Whenever I see a reference to "the Mods," I also see something about their rivals, "the Rockers." I know that this even led to some violent "rumbles" between the two groups in the mid-sixties. How would you contrast the two? (Almost all of my information about this comes from watching the Rock Opera "Tommy," by The Who.)
This was only a fraction that wanted to fight, usually at a seaside resort on a Bank Holiday. The Rockers date back to the 50's, the mods came along in the early 60's. Rockers wore Leathers and rode Motor bikes, Modes dressed in Trainers Jeans, T-shirt and Parker coats, rode scooters, usually a Vespa or Lambretta.
I watched an episode of "I Dream of Jeannie" today, and they were going to a mod party. I had no idea what a mod party was and had to look it up. But it seems like a coincidence that I heard the word on I Dream of Jeannie today, and then tonight I hear it again.
I remember Cathy McGowan interviewing Ringo Starr on the show and asking if he was a Mod or a Rocker. His reply: “Neither - I’m a ‘Mocker’…that’s one of John’s!” (Giving John Lennon the credit for the new word).
The Beatles had just made their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964 introducing them countrywide to America. The viewership numbers on Ed's show that night were totally insane. Bud made his job look easy.
Will have to disqualify myself! I have lots of Ready Steady Go programmes on DVD so I would recognise Cathy McGowan anywhere. In the same round girl No. 3 looks very familiar? Wonder if she became a film star?
Game #1: _Ready Steady Go_ was produced by Rediffusion, by then the London (weekday) ITV franchisee. In 1968 Rediffusion merged with another ITV franchisee to form the legendary Thames Television, that ceased to operate as an ITV franchisee in 1993, but continued as a production company - now owned by the same Fremantle that also took the G-T legacy, Game #2: another “Earthquake Priest” appeared in a 1961 episode: th-cam.com/video/n9uAMbPHdPY/w-d-xo.html
She was a perfect counterpart to Kitty Carlisle, who was so sophisticated and decked out in evening gowns and furs--and Peggy seemed more typically middle class.
They kept on about Radio Diffusion and having heard it in London. But that was French not British. We did have Rediffusion back then which is what I think they were thinking of. But it's hardly surprising they said never heard of it. Oh, and yet another bunny girl, that's about five I think I've seen on here.
I noticed Orson did not, on this show, draw little doodles on his cards showing his voting choice. I don't know whether this was before or after he did so regularly.
Never saw any sign of the Mod fashion the RSG host is wearing except for her hair style which is very much of the period. By sept of 64, girls wore short skirts, way above the knee, patterned hose and flats or thigh high boots. glad that ugly skirt never made it over here. I think Mary Quant was Carnaby St....I could talk about guys fashions too.
Now I finally know why a favorite television show from my toddler days was called "The Mod Squad".
"Well, it may be somebody's garbage, but it's my bread and butter." Good for him!
What a terrific show!!!
The Beatles and The Dave Clark Five were great groups that put out great music!!!

Another enjoyable show ! Thanks for the uploading :)
That was great the way the 3rd contestant in round 3 couldn't stop laughing 😄

Thank you! When I first heard about this I thought it was about the most asinine reason for two cliques to fight each other that I'd ever heard of!
It is stupid! just some Teenagers need an excuse to fight to show how macho they are, thankfully most of us were not like that.
Interesting that McGowan was on about six weeks after the Beatles' first appearance on Ed Sullivan.
The garage man seems like a good egg
I wonder if she was the inspiration for George Harrison's line "The posh bird that gets everything wrong" in A Hard Day's Night.
That scene was filmed on April 13, 1964. It might have been.

Good thought. I bet so.

Thanks for posting.
At first I thought the queen of mod when in silhouette was Cilla Black.
Orson Bean is being very creepy today.

Mary Quant passed away 13 April 2023.
Very sorry to hear that. R.I.P.
The Mod style !!! Groovy !!!!
As an incurable aficionado of The Beatles I love the three girls' looks equally !
When I think of Mod, I think of the model Twiggy.

Super ironic that the comment at 6:50 is being addressed at what is later known to be a current Playboy bunny
My thoughts too.
I thought for sure gal #1 was Cilla Black when I first saw her. Cilla had an amazing singing voice, and a huge hit with "Alfie" (1966).
Cathy McGowan, according to Wikipedia, is still alive and has been living with Michael Ball since the 90s.
Peggy Cass is really very sweet, isn't she?
I always enjoyed watching her on TTTT. I found her very down to earth, not at all pretentious.
Never really cared for her.
um, ok
She was a perfect counterpart to Kitty Carlisle, who was so sophisticated and decked out in evening gowns and furs--and Peggy seemed more typically middle class.
Peggy was a perfect foil for Orson Bean's witticisms. 😂
Correct names are Daniel Linehan and John Zemlansky.
Thank you !
Orson Bean ate up the garbage subject!
Lady #1 in Game #1
Man #3 in Game #2
Man #3 in Game #3
Never saw those long skirts on anyone...fortunately....it was all mini skirts by '65.
Later on in the decade, came the maxi skirt.
@@kentetalman9008More in the 70s!
The skirts were short in late 60s into the 70s. Funny that they weren’t as short as back then until the past five years or so with today’s teens!

I think this is before he started doing that.
Who is Sydney Bernstein?
Google it
There was also Mary Quant on "What's My Line?" in 1966.
How weird to see that in 1964 the "garbage" professor was treated almost like a joke. It's good to see some things have changed for the better.
I was thinking it sounds more like someone they would have had in the Garry Moore era.
yes, kitty was trying to ask serious questions about sanitation and health, but everyone was acting stupid about it, orson bean especially.

Radio Rediffusion
Yeah, I had a feeling it was #1 in Game 1, too.
Thanks for giving it away..............lol
