China - Industrial Steam at 25 Degrees Below - Jixi 2003 (Part 1)

In bitterly cold conditions, numerous SY class 2-8-2s are busy doing the sort of work that the Hunslet saddle tanks did around the UK's northern coal mining areas. Working conditions for the local population are some of the worst I have seen here. In winter, the temperature never rises above freezing and is usually around minus 20 or colder. It's interesting to see that one of the harder jobs, manually tipping slag, is being done by female labour here. They do have a nice church here though ... obviously the Catholic Church isn't hard up ! Filmed in November 2003.

That was for the crossing. Reversing over an unguarded road crossing is a very dangerous situation ... especially with Chinese drivers.

It was exceptionally cold. Minus 20ish is bad enough but there was such a wind blowing as well.

Hahaha, ooh nevermind - I am sure we all did that in our time. Mostly, it is really great and unique footage from a corner nobody publishes anything on or from. And .. i have been to Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture, but never experienced minus 25. Jaix. I can imagine how you felt with your camera - its my favorite self torment also.
