Thanks Drew! My husband drinks wine and plays chess, so he'd love either of those gifts! I'll have to see if he's got an electric bolt cutter without telling him why I want to use it. The drill is no problem. I love the candle idea too and my daughter loves candles!

As beautiful and tempted as I am to make the chess board diy, I question how safe it would be to drill into chess pieces, especially for new folks. Any tips for first timers? Or alternatives instead of drilling?

The chess board project is fantastic--great for my friend with dogs who needs hanging space for leashes and collars, and the bookmark for my friends who read a lot and the wine corks and the checkered candles. . . I think you just solved half my Christmas gift list!

My husband's family has a "Dollar Gift" (yes, $1) swap tradition and coming up with my idea is always the most stressful (but sometimes fun) part of the holidays for me. These are all really beautiful! I love how the candles look but I can’t help but wonder if it is still safe to burn them considering you used acrylic paint, which is based in resin. I’m concerned about the fumes burning it could cause, maybe they are just a good looking candle, not for actual burning? Love your content though!

Great question! I am interested to know more, too. Some professional artist grade acrylic paints contain heavy metals, so I wonder if those are becoming airborne when the candle reaches that section 😬

These are terrific Drew! I love especially the bookmark one, which as I do embroidery I can do some fancy stuff! I laughed when you found the "lazy daisy" stitch. It *is* a neat one. There are tons more so those who stitch could make some fabulous book marks. Outstanding is also the checkerboard hand it up board - I want to know. Is the pattern showing a check mate? (I don't play chess so wouldn't know) Enjoy your holiday prep!
Oh I doubt it though I'm not a player. He called the "knight" a "horse" which made me chuckle. But all great diy ideas!

Happy Holidays Drew. If you add a bit of dish soap, I use Dawn, to your acrylic paint it helps it stick to the candles when you’re painting.
I am so excited that I received my Lone Fox purchases from your holiday store this week. They are beautiful of course but I must congratulate who wraps the items for shipping. Every piece was so amazingly wrapped and secure so that there was no possibility of breakage.

While cute, those candles are a no. Acrylic paint should NEVER be used on candles, even if non-toxic. The melted (or even worse, burnt) acrylic paint will release bad fumes in the air.
Have to ask Drew - when you burn the painted candles, what happens to the paint? Does is just melt away like the wax? Or smoke or drip at all? I love the idea, but like to use dripless, clean tapers. Just wondering how that changes the candle. Maybe someone in your community knows? (great ideas!) :)

I love the chess board “Coat Check” but if you are giving it to someone that likes chess, learning to play the game so the pieces are actually “in check” (or at least the correct spots on the board) might be a good idea, or it could annoy them. Probably of more importance is to countersink the screw holes on the back, so the screw heads don’t damage your wall.
The candles are inspired! ☺️ I already had some on my shopping list, but this elevates them so much - I’ll have to try it!

I have to admit how much I missed your DIY video last year. I can say this with all honesty, that YOUR DIY projects are the only ones I still have out in my home! The one that gets the most comments is the $.50 plastic bowl and cup (from Target) glued together and covered with baking soda chalk paint. I filled mine with a beautiful green moss and have it placed on stack books! My grandsons love chess, so I will have to make the chess board project you did today for their room!!
This is the first comment I have ever posted for a video and I have to say this is probably one of the best Christmas diy gift videos out there. I stumbled across this video and I am so happy I did. The way you walk us through the projects is so easy to follow along with and I especially appreciate the tips you give along the way - like how to make the petals on the bookmark. You could make personalized xmas baubles,in felt like book mark,😊😊😊😊
Stars, trees, stockings, etc - just trace cookie cutters and cut out then stitch! They'd be cute tied to the bow on the front of a package for double duty. With the initial, it serves as a tag.
