Thank you Alena for coming through… sometimes it takes the confidence for others to speak up for you to get what you want done. He asked for dreads but they didn’t feel like they could possibly do a good job for it to stay. And you came and said do it anyway!
Love Alena, how Christ is first in her life, being her own advocate, being a Lioness Mom, and supporting her kids. Thank Alena and Joe, for sharing your lives with us.
Hi Joe! As an African with really long dreadlocks, I find it so cool to see how it is done on straight hair and I can really see that you have an appreciation for the culture!!❤ anyone who thinks otherwise is just jealous!
Imagine... View in original vlogs, how strong, decisive, and dedicated Alena was/ is, in keeping her family and the man she eventually took as her life time partner and love, thus holding everything together to this point... She has bing through the ringer/fire... YET... she held strong...God continuous Grace and Blessings on this family in all they do. Joe is a bless man in his support and dedication to his wife/ children, sister-in-law's extended family and friends/supporters...My full admiration 🙂 Love always 🙂
I just love the fact that the barber was inspired by Dennis Rodman with all of his crazy hairstyles back in the days! Dennis Rodman inspired a kid somewhere in the middle of Korea. That's love for black culture. He exuded love and respect for the culture and so does Joe lol. Love to all the Korean Kings (and zaddies 🫣😂)
😂 I find that to be funny since it's Asians who OWN AND run all the hair weave industry that so many people are shocked by this notion. Dreds didn't start in AFRICA. You never see any african art or artifacts depicting dredds. It's not cultural appropriation to be of ASIATIC Descent and wear dredds. Why? Because it is a hairstyle first worn by the MONGOLS, then the S.E. ASIATIC INDIANS who are known as YOGIS.
@@SGTDUKUMour hairstyles aren’t the same as yall. Asians are just like white ppl want to take everything from our culture while keeping your own culture sacred.
Hey Joe, As a Jamaican raised amongst rastafarians (my brother is a rastafarian priest. Rasta is for everybody. It is important to remember that it has a spiritual or faith based root. However, as long as you don't call it 'korean knots' or something else and you give credit to its origin its not cultural appropriation its cultural appreciation! Dr Dread clearly appreciated the culture so no worries!!! It looks good on you! One Love!
There was, initially, a quiet awkwardness. I think Alena is a type A personality/extrovert who really commands a space. Joe is kind of quiet and subdued and they maybe were thinking, wow, his wife is outgoing, friendly and sociable…not who they probably envisioned his wife to be for this quiet man. What I immediately thought was, they have no idea their history of knowing each other since high school and the kids they share.
I love everything about this! From the Barber’s wife loving how beautiful Joe’s head is to the Barber actually understanding 3c,3b & 4c hair. Joe, this style looks amazing on you!! Alena, you are so hilarious to me!! Great episode guys!
I love Joe's hair! Alena, have you ever read Octavia E. Butler's books. Her sci-fi/futuristic books are filled with characters who are multi-cultural. The way she describes her characters is so genius, subtle and natural. Her writing does not "scream", "This character is Asian and Black", or "This character is Latinx and white", or whatever the mixture is. The descriptions just emerge from her words. Your family is what I imagine when I read Octavia E. Butler. Here are a few titles: "Xenogenesis", "Adulthood Rights", "Imago". There are lots more, but these three have very interesting looking characters. I love the way you support each other in your individual desires for yourself. Now, that is unconditional love!
Joe, I love how you are open to trying different things. You are all about inclusion and embracing change to understanding your multicultural family . I Love it!!
It's just like those videos of kids reaction after dad shaves his beard. They didn't recognize him as "dad" right away, and it freaked them out a little, lol
26:29 Beautiful Joe! Only a sensitive, loving, kind man would go through so much to try to undetstand his kids hair and how to handle their hair. I love you guys channel and have been watching ii for a long time. You have an amazing family and you are so patient. Truly a Christian man! Pat
As a fellow dreadlocks, the only thing i say is tht it should have been shorter. But love how you embrace new ideas. after they permed the hair, the next would be to use the eco gel along with a tail comb, section the hair just as how they permed it and form the same patterns but with the use of the gel and comb
Alena I love the way you compliment your husband. Joe is very humble, loving, and kind. You two are a great couple, and parents. Joe your hair looks great and I pray that the Lord will continue to bless this loving family in Jesus Name.
I had no idea that Korea was so down to earth and brought forth such awesome people, Joe you're such a gentle spirit and the fact that you wanted to experience their experience (your families) says a lot about your character.
Well this has become the younger generation in Korea, similar now in Japan. Social/Cultural norms do shift as it seems with each generation...I've noticed this as well.

Really makes you think about how cultures evolve, are shared, made better and stronger! I’ve only ever heard of dread being referred to as bad-looking, unprofessional hair coming from black people around me . So though it’s weird to see a small community in south ko taking to it so strongly, makes me proud that people of other cultures can see the beauty in it and treat it with respect, not just appropriate it for a song... And props to Joe for trying something different and for wanting to understand this bit of black culture that is African hair, better ❤ ‘best husband and father of TH-cam’ ! Edit: Also he looks so happy with his new hairstyle😂

Hi Joe, when your oldest daughter said it looks like strings hanging off your head. I haven't been able to stop laughing since, I'm sorry. I know your intentions were good, but all styles are not for all people. Oh, and then the Son, he was so serious! They said what they really felt. 😂 God Bless you and your family! ❤

I love the look and think Joe is feeling it. I hope you keep it a few months at least, it will grow on the family. I love how they were all so nice even the ones that didn't really like it or know what to think. Joe and Alena's energy together is beautiful.
I love this! Thank you for sharing. I love the reference that Joe made about knowing what his children’s hair feels like. What a great experience. I know Alena will hook you up when the locs fall out! 😜
I got scared at first when Joe's head came out looking like ramen noodles 🤣 Really considerate of you, Joe to do this to understand your children's hair.
Dr. Alana is so full of life and energy...love her! Joe's locs were nice. They just made the ends a little too cookie cutter but other than that, they looked nice. He seemed to really like them so I hope he keeps them in. Blessings to this lovely family!
Much love to the family ❤Joe,I love your hair and the fact you will be able to understand how Alena takes care of the kids’ hair. Also noted-his wife’s skill with those clippers-she’s so dope! 😍❤️💯God bless you all🙏🏼❤️
Joe I gave you props for stepping outside your comfort zone. Getting a perm to change your texture and curl pattern to 4c is your only path to having hair that can lock. The kids seemed stunned, but I think it will grow on them
Omg they are tripping Joe 😂 it looks so dope! I have locs so I’m always interested to know how other races with straighter hair get this process done, so thank you for sharing! Also they will look a lot more natural once they begin to grow out ❤

The Dreadlock Shop did a good job. Joe looks different. I'll need to get use to him with dreads. Elana likes it and that's what's important. I want to see how the kids like it. Joe and Elena have such an amazing family. Thanks for the video.
I cannot get over how much I see Ajoui in Joe’s face. 😊 Also, the dreads are dope, I hope he keeps them for a while if they’re still in. I’m impressed at how knowledgeable the hairstylists were about different hair textures.

I think Joe’s hair looks great! The hair will look better as it gets older because the frizz will give a more natural look and blend with the roots. Their are a variety of different lock extensions but I’m not sure if they have those options there.
It will fall naturally once Joe's hair starts to grow out. Stick at it. I think it's going to be your new style go to. It certainly works with your Yamamoto-esque fashion style
