Magnificent Maria. It's been fascinating to see the phases of her career. Especially the mid-1990s Life is Sweet era. She looked like a fierce Greek goddess on stage, something off a coin or statue reanimated and ready to roar.
The life is Sweet album was noted by Musician Magazine to be the best rock album in a decade when it was released. The world just wasn't ready and Geffen never gave it a chance. Now out of print. I have to agree with Musician. Still one of the best rock albums.
you know David, I've long wished for a documentary like this but with the full LJ/MM experience from all sides, including Geffen/Iovine....looking back at things now would probably be interesting, if everybody could be honest...Geffen of course rarely speaks...there was an American Masters I believe about him on PBS last year and he was interviewed but LJ/MM didn't come up...I do remember him speaking about Laura Nyro, and how he couldn't really turn her into a major success and being disappointed about it, so he can self-reflect in that manner...would love to hear a detailed interview with Iovine too...I know HBO did a big doc on him and Dr. Dre last year, don't know if LJ/MM came up there...I have asked Little Steven online about his experience with MM early on...he answers questions from fans, but he wouldn't answer that one from me
betpow somewhere on a hard drive I have the entire Life is Sweet broadcast concert. I need to find it. It was recorded somewhere in Europe for TV. I'll start my search after Christmas. I'm a video editor so let's say I have a lot of hard drives. Might be daunting.
Name an artist that's worked for Geffen that has good things to say about him. Ask Don Henley about Geffen. Ask Neil Young, lol....he's a leech! Iovine got lucky to be the producer of Tom Petty's 'Damn the Torpedoes'...that really made his bones in the industry....But with those songs, any producer would've looked good. Two bigger assholes you'd be hard to find. I love Maria, i wish things could've gone different for her early in her career.
I saw the Geffen doc on PBS, he and Henley certainly went at it :) Three guys I'd like to hear more from about the LJ experiment are Geffen, Iovine, and Little Steven...Iovine has spoken a little about it, the other two, nothing I can find
thanks for this complete show. No matter what approach, it is Maria's voice and songs that stand out. Although the narration is in Dutch, this doc shows what can happen when great talent is not allowed to grow and change. The music business, always corrupt, spiraled down to new levels of incompetence and greed starting in the mid-eighties right on through to the present day. Maria is a liitle Dolly, a little Aretha, a little Wanda Jackson... in other words she is like no one else..
Life is sweet is a masterpiece! Nice to see how she struggeld to get there. It’s for me in the Leaque of albums like Tommy, Sgt Pepper, Houses of the holy, Hunky Dury etc... beuatiful album!!!
Wow. Just recently found out about this gorgeous singer. Why wasn't she one of the top artists in entertainment since the 80s? Oh yeah, because people pulling the strings on record companies and radio broadcasting usually have no taste in music at all... Seems I have some musical digging to do 🙂
You're welcome dh....I thought this was quite the special...amazing interview, and insane performance on the bed!....Maria posted the other shortened version on her FB page and it caused quite the stir. I had a more detailed description up but was asked to make it simpler, maybe I'll add a bit more now because it's been up a while. Wish more people would see it but I'm not too much of a promoter.
I've loved her music for a long time now. I am the same age as Maria and grew up about 20 minutes from her. I remember hearing about the "Cowpunk" craze in a local music magazine called "Bam". So we went to see Lone Justice at Fenders Ballroom in Long Beach California (I still have all the snap shots I took). I was an instant fan. Unfortunately after "Sin to Get Saved" I lost track of her as I got wrapped up in career and raising kids (I assumed she retired). Thanks to TH-cam, I now know there are a few albums I need to buy starting with Life is Sweet. Thanks again for sharing these gems with people like me.
demonhoopa again, you're very much welcome...and many others have uploaded some stuff, rare and not (check out "selinakyle" and sherrywallace" in particular..or just search Maria's name or Lone Justice in YT search box) in addition...we're all the same age then, I just turned 50 this year (Maria next btw, we'll see how she takes that :)...sad story, never seen her...came to Cleveland clubs twice in back to back years with LJ, but somehow further away in northeastern Ohio I didn't get the news and missed them, ouch!...and man, I would love to see those photos...is there any way you could scan them somewhere?...you know Maria recently posted an old one of her performing that popped up, but not as old as yours, on her facebook page and she really got a kick out of it...I bet she'd love to see yours, seriously, think about it.
demonhoopa and one more thing dh, here's my other rarity (couldn't get it up on YT before because of copyright issues with NBC/Universal/SNL) but with the new comments system I think we can now link to it...LJ's SNL appearance, both songs www.dailymotion.com/video/xv2kjt_lone-justice-shelter-i-found-love-saturday-night-live-12-20-86_music
demonhoopa and one last last thing :)...Farm Aid recently posted this here John Mellencamp & Maria McKee - Pink Houses (Live at Farm Aid 1986) this was surprising because LJ's performance may have been lost for the ages because they followed Sammy Hagar who got the broadcast thrown off the air for swearing...I asked Farmaid if they kept filming, if it will ever be seen and they said they will try to get everything out but aren't sure if it's there to be found...funny story, Hagar's drummer ended up auditioning for Maria..she walked out on him during their face to face when he told her he used to work for Sammy :)...not his fault
I have to wonder whether the "Life is Sweet" tour performances in the Netherlands were ever broadcast on TV -- and if they'll ever be available on YT. Seeing snippets from that tour in this program makes one envious of those people who managed to see Maria play those songs live. It must have been an experience right up there with those lucky enough to have seen Jeff Buckley play live.
idk, Eddie....I know a couple of people who would know but don't want to bother them anymore. I do know that some of the tapes of this special were later lost or stolen, up to half.of them :(
I saw the London and Paris shows, two of the best concerts I have ever seen. She’s always great, but a tour of this album couldn’t fail to be exceptional even by Maria standards.
thanks John..kind of a long story how I was able to do it, I had no idea it existed...a longer description of it was up for a while above there's some other interviews with Maria up here too, she's entertaining in them, which isn't always the case for musicians here's another longer one from Extra, with a performance at the end th-cam.com/video/Wb01KRDJsQ8/w-d-xo.html
new, 1/27/17, live in studio radio appearance in Dublin, Ireland 16 minutes..talks about her career and sings "Show Me Heaven" & "You Are The Light" www.rte.ie/radio/radioplayer/rteradiowebpage.html#!rii=b9%5F21122215%5F19148%5F27%2D01%2D2017%5F
One has to wonder what might have become of Lone Justice had their development not been stunted by instant promotion to the bigs. But that's just wishful thinking. That Maria wouldn't have been discovered and peeled off from the rest of the group and exploited is pretty ludicrous when you think of it.

In order not to forget how brilliant she is!
Magnificent Maria. It's been fascinating to see the phases of her career. Especially the mid-1990s Life is Sweet era. She looked like a fierce Greek goddess on stage, something off a coin or statue reanimated and ready to roar.
Life is Sweet still defines a part of me in a way no other album can.

And her half brother, Bryan Maclean of Love wrote Alone Again Or. What a songwriting legacy that family has.
