  • This morning we went to the glorious Second Beach in Olympic National Park. After a 20 minute walk (compressed into 50 seconds in the video!) and a scramble over a pile of driftwood logs (characteristic of beaches on the Pacific NW), you arrive at a broad expanse of sand (we deliberately timed this visit for low tide) with a series of rock stacks and pools. So much to shoot in so little time...
There was a dense overcast in the sky so we didn't get any morning colour but this gave me the opportunity to think about shooting in black and white.
    Enjoy!

Hey Ian, nice photography, mate. Subscribed! I'm taking a trip with my wife. Do you remember the tide height during your visit? Any recommendations on what tide height is best?

jpl5007 Hi and thanks for watching the video. I can’t remember the exact tide height at the time but it was low tide, which gave us the chance to walk out around some of the stacks. I expect at high tide you’d be restricted to the top of the beach among the driftwood. Good luck and enjoy your trip. Olympic Peninsula is an amazing place 😀

I love your videos. Thank you for making them. What is the purpose of the tape over the view finder?

      Hi David
Thanks for checking out my videos and your kind words. Light can get in through the viewfinder and affect the image during long exposures and I forgot to pack my viewfinder cap so duct tape to the rescue 😀
      Cheers Ian

Ian Smissen Photography- Thanks for the reply. That was my guess. Do you think that step is necessary for astrophotography when light is not a powerful? I guess it can’t hurt either way.

      Hi Dave,
yes, probably not required for astrophotography but, as you say, can't hurt :-)
      Cheers, Ian

This should only be necessary for DSLR camera, not mirrorless ones.
