    probably the best demonstration of the tecumseh governor system on the net. Big thanks from my 1966 Sears snow blower....

    Thanks for the video man! I appreciate the explanation of how the governor works, I've never dissected a Tecumseh to have known that. Understanding what each of the adjustments does gives a guy a fighting chance! Thanks again!

    Bowser, thank you so much for your explanation. I've been rebuilding an 8.5hp Tecumseh woodchipper engine that I found in a junk pile. I got it working but wasn't able to figure out the throttle and governor linkage until I saw your video. Thank you, thank you, thank you. You da' man!!!

    My old 5hp Tecumseh had wore through the governor arm that the flathead screw fastens to the actual governor armature
    and was sort of wobbling around. I put a small washer in behind the screw and that seems to work fine and it might help prevent wear to the armature and shaft. Good video thanks for sharing.

    Thanks so much for making this video. I've been having a very hard time trying to get a troy-bilt tiller with a tecumseh motor on it working right. Finally got the carb working nicely only to find the governor didn't work at all. It was revving way high so I adjusted it as you said, now it runs like a champ. Cheers!

    This Guy is Awsome thanks for making the videos. You have helped me a bunch.
    I got a Techumseh 6.25 on a push mower. I think this is what is wrong with the one I have.. Strarts up runs fine but as soon as you hit the grass it dies. Its like theres no recovery.
    I have taken the governer and moved it while the engine is running and it will speed up and slow down. So I know its working its just out of adjustment. Thanks for the tip I will give this a shot.

    Thank you! My John Deere TRS22 Snowblower has this same engine and throttle set up! Just replace the carburetor after 4 years of no snow and the John Deere service people screwing up and making their carburetor replacement non working. But by me doing the work and finding 3rd party released carburetor for $16 over $175, I found out that the throttle control system is messed up. I just replaced the throttle control spring that was over stretched, that didn’t work. I will try the governor and arm next. By the way it is the third hole down from the top for the throttle control spring. That is common on several makes and models with this engine.

    Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! The same carb is on a Tecumseh 5 hp Sears Chipper/Shredder. I could not get it to start. The crankcase cracked and I replaced it with a used case. New carb and complete engine break down. This is the only video I have seen that shows the governor adjustment with any sense. Three things have to been adjusted to get it to go. Fuel mixture, idle mixture, and governor. Now, it runs great. Thanks again!!

    Thankyou s-o-o-o-o much, your video is the sweet answer to my prayer. I watched your video not knowing anything at all about the governor and its function in controlling engine speed (my toro snowblower was reving so high its heat was melting the plastic cowl) and suspect the governor - as you explained - being the culprit. Will let you know when I apply what you - the master - has taught.

    Thanks bro. I had to rebuild my carb on same engine and when I put it back to get her I noticed the gov didn't respond to the throttle and the thing was all the way to the right @100% rpm. No wonder why it wouldn't start before.
    My carb was gunked, the gov spring was too lax and the gov rod setting was outta wack

    Hey again, Yea I straightened up the Gov. the way you did in the video. And it does the same crap. Starts up runs, but runs to slow. When it hits grass it stalls out. Its like the Gov. does not do anything. So I got it running. And bent the tab. To get the RPMs up. But then it wants to die. Starts stalling out. I found as long as I prime the primer bubble with it running it ran fine. So I checked the carb, I may have found a bad gasket. I will replace tommor. Then see if it will work,.

  • @fred306801
    @fred306801 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    yea thats right. Has like a big screw in the front of the bowl under the carb. that sits side ways. When you take the two nuts off the whole air breather comes off. The bottom is plastic and the top metal.

    Thank you for the video! I need you help, i fact. I have a question how to decrease high RPM by adjusting the govenor. On you video this is explained staring the 5th minute. Should the throtle lever be in the STOP position when adjusting the governor? My understanding of the procedure is that I should loosen the screw, push the lower arm towrads the carburetor (to the right) and push the upper arm towards the cover (to the left), right? After that I tighten the screw. And this will allow the decrease RPM. Currently, my snow blower (5 HP Tecumseh engine) has very high RPM about 11 thousand, and the lever goes down by itself from the RUN position (not FAST). In the fast position the engine starts, runs for some time and halts. Any adjsutments by the scere on the lever do not help. Very much appreciate you help. Thank you in adance for your answers!

    Tecumseh service manual States loosen the screw holding the two arms together rotate the governor arm fully counterclockwise so it sits up against the governor shaft and then rotate the bar to its fully fully pulling on the throttle full open and then tighten it down that's from manual for the horizontal shaft 3 to 11 hours the PDF is available online if anybody's interested in it that's how I found out about it along with sourcing on TH-cam hope this helps somebody

    I've got a question for you. My Huskee snow blower runs great once it's warmed up, but when cold it's hard starting, and while it is running I engage the auger and drive system and would barely hit the snow and it kills it. What would the problem be? It has a Tecumseh 5 hp engine.

  • @hmdwn
    @hmdwn 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video, by appearance your carb-governor and related linkage is exactly as my (like new) 2003 Tecumseh HSSK 50-55 5hp MTD Snow Thrower.
    The engine starts, idles and revs perfectly however, the problem started last season, like today when heading into 6" of light snow the engine will labor-down and I have to stop the augers so the engine will again rev-up.
    Last year I did move the governor arm to make it rev a little higher, I also turned-in the governor side screw.
    Just today the problem of it laboring-down still occurs, it's almost like the governor isn't working.
    Not many hours on this very well maintained snow thrower and a few years ago with it would easily cut through 12" of heavy snow without wanting to stall.
    At this time I have not moved the governor spring to any other holes.
    Thanks for any suggestions

    • @frankstreelman8695

      Ray Josephs has any one given you a fix for this problrm?

    • @hmdwn
      @hmdwn 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Frank, the laboring down to sometimes stalling issue still continues. Last snow fall maybe 6-8" of light stuff. I even installed a new spark plug and fresh gas...I run straight 30 wt oil, but it was wicked cold...maybe the oil it to thick? The engine idles perfect and revs high without a miss but if I don't absolutely craw into the snow with stopping and starting or cut 1/2 a path with the augers the engine wants to labor down and sometimes will sputter and die. Then it takes several pulls to refire the engine.
      This engine use to plow through anything on the ground, now it's almost an embarrassment. 2003 machine, very few hours on it and it still looks new...that's how I take care of my toys.
      Now I wonder if like a lawn mower, could the timing have shifted by the crank keyway or, could the internal governor be broken?
      Everything shown in your video checks out on my engine, last winter I pulled the carb and everything was spotless and all small orifices were open. And the gas cap is venting.
      Pretty sure Snow is done for the season, temp are getting into the upper 50's.
      BTW, I read the valve springs and guides could become an issue on this engine but again, it's old but not many hours on it...I could do a hot compression test...what should the 'hot' compression be on this engine?
      Thanks for any further suggestions, Ray

      @frankstreelman8695 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @hmdwn
      @hmdwn 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry about that Frank, as mentioned I did follow all the suggestions in the video and even went further and removed the carb in hopes to see some issues within...everything was spotless and perfect. I'm leaning towards maybe valve problems and or low compression. Snow is done for the season here in SEPA. Before I put the machine away for the summer I'll perform a hot compression test to see what the readings are. Darn shame as this snowblower of mine would blow through the deep stuff without any issues...now even 6" of dry snow lug the engine down to where it wants to sputter out.
      Maybe the video maker will get back to us...who knows.

    • @hmdwn
      @hmdwn 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Found my low power problem...I pulled the head and the aluminum cylinder wall is badly scored! All score marks are above the rig/piston travel path.
      I completely tore the engine down...piston shirt and rang-lands are great, no busted piston rings.
      Crank and rod journal are perfect, zero debris in the cam chest...everything is spotless with no metal shavings etc. Valves & lifters are good too.
      The only think I can thing of, even though this is a 2003 snowblower it has maybe 30 hours on it.
      I always changed the oil and winterized it properly and it was always stored indoors.
      So, I believe it was just slapped together at the factory and the low power problem just progressed over the hours.
      The truly sad part...I don't believe the aluminum cylinder block can be bored for a larger piston...I believe the engine block is junk!
      Seriously, this 2003 MTD Yard Machines looks like the day I purchased it.
      To think, with maybe only 30 hours run time this is now a throwaway engine is very disappointing.

    thank you for the information. I have a question. When my Tecumseh engine ( 5HP horizontal MTD snow king ) fires up, it's in fastt rpm, but when I lower the lever to slow, it doesn't make a difference. I installed a repair kit on the carburetor, but it didn't help. I'm guessing it's the governor. I've just seen your video and I'm going to check and see if the screw that holds the lever is loose. I also noticed on mine that the governor spring appears weak and barely has tension. I don't know if I need a new spring or if this is normal for a governor spring. I appreciate your information.

    Hey Suthrnrepair , you ever worked on these Vector carb. ? Its on a Tecumseh looks like a 6.0 - 6.5 Hp something like that the model starts out vlv66. I am guessin that the RPM are around 33 - 3500 RPMs. Any ways I get it running and it sounds good around 3000 RPMs
    yet perhaps a bit slow. When I bend that tab to increase the RPMs it stalls. IF I push the red primer button it picks up and runs good. I did find a a bad gasket on the carb. I will get a new one tommor.

      1, 1/2 turns out on the main, 1,1/4 turns out on the idle screw is the presets. After that start it, let it warm up for 5 minutes and tyan make your fine tune adjustment's. Middle way, from to lean and too rich is where it needs to be. A lot of times, the preset is almost perfect from the start.

    I have a governor problem, Toro GTS, no throttle. It runs fine for a while then every once in a while it speeds way up. I can stop the engine, start right back up and it runs fine for a minute, then speeds way up. I can let go of the safety level, it starts to die and I'll pull it back quick enough so the engine starts up again and it runs normal for another minute or so. Could this be a problem with in assembly inside the engine (the weights and gear?)

    My snow king 5hp is hard to start, runs, then dies and I think it may be the governor. I've replaced plug, carb., coil, drilled small hole in cap, checked fuel line and tank. New gas. There are low hrs. on this engine and the carb is not adjustable. When starting from cold if I choke it it will not start. I can not spray or add gas or it dies faster. The governor is the only thing left. Do you think it may be the governor and what initial settings should I start with?

    Great Video! I have recently become a driveway mechanic and have been messing around fixing my old stuff. I didn't know how to adjust the governor or how it even worked (thanks for that in the video too). I my Tecumseh engine looks like the one in this video and is off my snow blower. This year (after 17 years) started to run way too fast. I have tried a new governor spring and several adjustments after watching this video. I need to replace the screw as it doesn't stay tight anymore. I keep running into the same problem, it either revs too fast or it is on the verge of stalling. I will try another spring as the one i tried was a generic spring from a local hardware store and although it appears to be the same size, it has too much tension. Any other suggestions to make the adjustment would be appreciated.

      Did you get it running? Seems like I am having the same issue with my motor, its old but it just stopped running after snow-blowing my driveway.

    if my governor gear is completely broken, gear and linkage, will the engine not run properly? I have the same engine on my snow blower, i took it apart and found the governor broken inside the crankcase, it burns oil very badly and wont stay started. Huge leak coming out of the crankshaft hole on the cover, I wouldn't think that would prevent the motor from running... seems to be getting good compression and sealing in the head but sill burning oil. Any ideas?

      The engine will run and run good with a broken gov. but you cant throttle it correctly and when it goes under a load it wont have any power ..the gov. is what adjusts the carb linkage to hold a steady speed and keeps it from over revving ... a engine can have good compression and still burn oil it just making it past the rings or might have some small scaring in the cylinder wall .. as for oil leaking around the crank shaft in the side plate ,,thats a seal leak if it doesnt have wear in the cover

      The gov on my 3.5 HP doesn't move when the engine is running. It does exactly what you described. Runs fine, but under load it will not make power. Is it difficult to replace?
