  • The Jedi might be bad, but Jo and Mal are here to talk you through it as they dive into 'The Acolyte' Episode 3 (08:13). They kick off their deep dive with the witchy origins of Mae and Osha, and pick apart the troubled past that haunts them and the Jedi (20:08). Later, they are joined by Ben Lindbergh to discuss the early 'Star Wars' lore and what it means for the rest of the season (01:43:03).

Now that you guys are standing in front of your work each episode via video, we should be clear: you look, like, super cool. Almost cooler than you’ve always sounded. The quality of the actual words-based content of the show is well-established and needs no confirmation, but appearances are firing on all geek Cylinders which is a relief, and a delight. You guys are, just, like, the coolest, devil-may-care, at-home-in-the-world, handsomest/purdiest nerdcasting champions out there rn, and we look forward to a parade of the cool t shirts and any other ways you can demonstrate how to carry our nerdly bodies with pride. The comic arc of Vader going to get the kyber crystal from Kirak Infil'a is so good. Vader gets absolutely bodied similar to the way Mae does in the first episode and uses a similar trick to defeat Infil'a.

Hate to be a stickler, but it drives me kinda nuts that so many people misuse the term Immaculate Conception. Immaculate Conception refers to the concept that Mary, mother of Jesus, was born without the stain of Original Sin. The concept of a virgin birth or God the Son "made flesh" is known as the Incarnation. You can thank being raised Catholic and Wednesday night CCD classes for my annoying pedantry. Sorry! Love the show!

As a straight male that has been loudly defending this show for months as the incels attacked it for their obviously bigoted reasons… this show is not good so far.. and that’s probably putting it kindly. It’s truly horrible what some people have been doing and saying about this show for months, but that doesn’t mean the rest of us can’t just be objective about it. I love that Disney is awarding deserved opportunities to this cast and has great representation, but the bad writing and directing is just setting the cast up for even more hatred 😕

When Disney bought Star Wars I think a lot of fans were enthusiastic because they thought it meant not only would we be continuing the Skywalker Saga forward, but we also had the opportunity to set up a separate saga thousands of years in the past (Old Republic) to introduce a whole new saga with a blank slate. Instead, the anthology films were set within the Skywalker Saga. Then, after TROS, Star Wars exclusively became shows set between events in the Skywalker Saga. 'Filing the gaps' as Filoni once put it. We were suddenly no long moving forward in addition to not getting anything new. Then, The High Republic was sold as this Old Republic-style new adventure, but it really just seems to be filing the gaps before the Phantom Menace. Fundamentally, Star Wars is supposed to be a great epic adventure, and you know what doesn't feel epic? Filling in the gaps

    • @KDOGGBOI
      @KDOGGBOI 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The farther away from the Skywalker Saga the easier it is and the more opportunities there are to take creative risks. The closer to the S.S. the more a show/movie has to be subservient to the canon.
They should have done the math on Yoda’s age, and set the show 100 years before his birth.

Totally agree about having to look back at this episode after the rest of the season. Unfortunately feel that way about much of the show so far and that’s honestly a bit tough to have for such a long span of time. I’m sure it will still feel cool when it pays off, but a whole season of not loving it and waiting for that pay off isn’t a great formula to me. Like it’s hard to watch when you’re wondering if the directing / writing is bad or if the fire sequence at the end was meant to look strange on purpose. Still optimistic for the rest, but hoping it picks up a bit soon.

I mean, I enjoy their deepdive coverage on shows that warrant it, like HotD with large backstories, histories and more complicated storytelling. But this show does not warrant it at all. It's shallow and average as hell. It's not written that well and the mystery setup is very boring. Having the belief that this episode will improve retroactively when we learn more later on is just a very bad sign. The episode itself should be compelling, and it isn't at all the case.

I’m enjoying your deep dive but I truly do not understand how anyone can watch this episode and think the Jedi come off in a bad light.
    1. When they first arrive, they do so diplomatically. It’s the witches that escalate to violence and completely dominate the mind of a Padawan (this is much different than Jedi mind trick and obviously a dark side power). The Jedi now know they are a capable coven of force users that dabble in the dark side.
    2. The witches state they are exiled and not understood by the rest of the Galaxy. Exiled would mean there is a set of rules regarding their banishment and not understood could imply their dark force powers. Regardless, by their own admission the rest of the Galaxy has a negative disposition towards them.
    3. The Jedi ask permission to test the children. We don’t know what would occur if they would’ve just taken Osha and left the witches alone. The witches don’t have a discussion about now they must flee so we can assume they aren’t worried about the Republic further escalating the situation.
    4. The Jedi state that the witches cannot train children. This could perhaps be terms of their exile or broad terms regarding any group of exiled dark force users (since the Jedi say they were unaware of anyone there… which is poor script writing at best. The Jedi have no reason to lie about their activities there).
    5. The witches repeatedly come off as hypocritical and untrustworthy. The main witch repeatedly tells Osha she’s too young to understand the world and that her wants / desires may change… while also asking her to make a lifelong decision to remain in isolation and be branded a witch. Meanwhile we know the Jedi might not be a lifelong commitment as she obviously was able to leave the order.
    6. Despite being raised in an isolated coven of witches who dabble in the dark side and completely hate the Jedi, Osha knows the Jedi are a force of good. This is arguably again bad scriptwriting but you could gather that her beliefs of the Jedi as good despite all odds pointing the other way are directed through the force. Meanwhile Mae who is obviously psychopathic (attempting to murder her sister) shares the sentiment that the Jedi are evil.
    7. After their diplomatic parley the witches hold a council where many share the sentiment of attacking the Jedi.
    8. While we don’t know the full story yet, from the council above it would make sense that after Osha claims she is leaving the Jedi are either attacked by the witches or they tell the witches they must take both children and are attacked. It would be obvious to them that Mae is being corrupted by the dark side and dangerous to let her remain with the cult let alone be the protocol.
So now we come to why the Jedi feel so guilty. With what we have seen, they should not feel guilty or need to cover up the situation. Either they were attacked first or attacked when the witches refused or the Jedi enforced protocol. There won’t be political fallout because nobody likes the witches anyways and the Jedi would be hailed heroes for eradicating a secret / lost cult of dark side sympathizers. Perhaps they feel guilty about killing everyone but they are all adults, all part a coven, and their “power of many” mantra would likely have all of them participating in the ensuing battle. Hard things occur during war so this guilt would be momentary.
The only thing they might feel guilty about is Sol lying to Osha about Mae starting the fire. But this could be chalked up to bad screen writing (as he wouldn’t know she started the fire) or let’s assume that Mae was there when the Jedi came to collect Osha. Mae tells them “you can’t because I burned her in a fire”. Now the Jedi have even more initiative to leap into action.
For me this episode didn’t “kill Star Wars” but a lot of this show is riding on how future episodes explain what occurred. If the director’s intent was to paint the Jedi as the bad guys here they failed miserably. But remember this episode is primarily from the perspective of Osha who adores the Jedi so that could mean there are some discrepancies.

This pod rightly acknowledged that, at least on the surface, to this point, the math ain't mathing in terms of story logic. All that to say, nice touches here and there aside, the show's first three episodes are poorly structured narratively in that they confuse the audience and not in a good way. Star Wars is dead.
How are people who openly hate a franchise's source material put in charge of writing for that franchise? This is what killed Witcher, the Silmarillion, Marvel, and now it's killed Star Wars, just to name a few. As an author, I find this as a very big problem. Stealing someone's life's work and twisting it to fit your own agenda and make you money is a horrible thing to do. Not respecting source material shows a lack of integrity, and it's crazy that its become socially acceptable.
Star Wars is dead, and if you like it and are defending it at this point, then you are clearly nothing more than a mindless consumer sheep, and this problem keeps happening because of YOU.
Let's stop this culture war and get back to respecting source material, and valuing good escapism and immersive storytelling.
