Wayne was the first jazz musician I ever saw live. As a teenager I saw him open for Chick Corea in 1984. One of my fondest music memories ever.

Great video. I listened to Speak No Evil last night after hearing the news. What a record. To add to the Wayne Shorter discography, Wayne was a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. I listened to Indestructible last weekend, which includes Lee Morgan. Another amazing album.

Saw him play twice with Weather Report, extraordinary one minute incendiary the next quiet lyrical and the interplay with Joe Zawinul was remarkable. And what a great writer too. Saw the Guardian called him “one of the greatest saxophone players of the Bebop era” One of?

Greatest is subjective…but it’s not a serious conversation without mentioning Shorter

From Herbie: “Wayne was one of the few people who brought music to Miles that didn’t get changed.”
I think that says it all in a nutshell

Hardbop era ! Wayne was smitten by bebop and arose during the hardbop driving blues era.

Thanks.🎵 good for people to hear something of his earlier days.🎶
His work with Art Blakey wouldn't be amiss either.🎷
An exceptional composer. Something often overlooked. ALL his Blue Note stuff is exceptional 🎼🎵

Well done, John. He was an amazing musician and, by all reports, a wonderful man. I first heard him in early Weather Report albums, and, later, backtracked to his earlier work. As a sometime clarinetist, I was especially interested in his use of the soprano saxophone. We are blessed to have had him among us! ❤

Am I correct that the last piece you played was from Emanon? Will have to explore that one.
Thank you for celebrating and honoring Wayne's excellent legacy. Truly remarkable output and contributions to jazz.

Tenor and soprano, I don't think he was ever an alto sax player, certainly not his main instrument.

I cannot understand why some people clean their records and playing equipment. I think the sound of the dust in the grooves created by the dirty stylus is very exciting.

Alto sax? That was the one thing he didn't play... He played tenor and soprano.
