  • I spent some years before the internet came along mis-pronouncing a couple of band names. In this video, I give examples of some commonly mis-pronounced band and artist names, a couple songs titles, and even a record label. I'm sure you already knew the correct way to say them, but maybe it will amusing to you at least.

    Enjoyed the hell out of this! I've got two more for you: Sufjan Stevens (German "j" imo, so SOOFyan) and the Zeppelin song "D'yer Mak'er" (like Jamaica, but with an "r" conjured out of thin air as the Brits and US northeasterners do, so jerMAKEer). The latter is from an old British joke, which, for any who haven't heard it, goes like this:
    Person 1: My wife went on holiday
    Person 2: D'yer mak'er (i.e. Jamaica)?
    Person 1: No, she went of her own accord

    I've gotten to the point where I pronounce these things however the person I am talking to does. For example I was discussing Black Sabbath with my boss, who is a huge fan of rock and metal, and he pronounced Tony Iommi as "ē-ah'-mē". And God I HATE talking about Rush with anyone because you never know how they are going to pronounce Peart! If I say his name first I say "Pert, or Pērt" just to cover myself. ABBA and the members of ABBA are a nightmare for obvious reasons. Vinnie and Carmine Appice, I simply give up on them.

    I read a story regarding Slade and Sade getting confused in Japan in the 80s. A bunch of Slade fans showed up at the airport thinking Slade was flying in, only to see Sade getting off. No joke, I swear I read it in a music magazine at like a Barnes & Noble. HUGE, Slade fan, by the way. I cringe at the Quiet Riot versions, haha.

    I thought you'd hit on Marty Balin, who has a short a in the first syllable of his last name. I mistakenly pronounced it with a long a until recently. Jorma's name gets garbled a lot as well. And since you mentioned Husker Du, I think there's a bit of a Bob Mould (moold vs mold) thing. I guess that applies to Colin Moulding of XTC as well. And the synth guy behind half of the Keith Emerson monophonic sound was Bob Moog, whose last name just has a long o sound, even if it sounds pretentious to say it that way. Good vid!

    There was a girl in my high school class who had the deceptively simple yet quirky last name "Rowland." Pronounced Rau-land, not Row-land. She forcefully made this point at the start of freshman year. Thereafter, whenever she was referred to, a student would would say her first name in a normal voice and then add her last name in a very loud and protracted manner. It was funny at the time, but then we were very immature.

    Sade said in a video that they pronounce her name with an R in England, but she doesn't pronounce it that way. In the states we put an accent on the E, while it sounds like she puts it on the A, but there is no R sound. I've always said it with an R and will continue to say it that way. I have wanted to do this for a while with names of designers and architects (many being foreign languages), because they are always being butchered, even by me. Great topic and well done Frithen.

    Really enjoyed your video again Mr. Filthen... And you always look clean as a whistle. Even when you were eating hot sauce. I have trouble pronouncing very short words for some reason. Like R.E.M. Do you pronounce that like Rem or each letter after another like R..E..M?. Also the audio equipment company NAD. Is it pronounced Nad or N...A...D? I've heard that pronounced different ways. Also the cassette company TDK. How exactly do you pronounce that? A real tongue twister, that one... So much so, that I just ask for Maxell. Or is it Maxwell? There's this lawyer in my area named Figin. He has some kind of fear or fixation that he's losing out on people calling him, because they are putting an extra g in the middle of his name. It's Figin not Figgin, he says. In his TV ads, his compulsion or fear comes to full tilt, as he spells out his name with his fingers outstretched, and with each letter of his name that he vocalizes, he simutaneously tucks in one finger of his hand. After he says the last letter of his name, there are no more outstretched fingers left and his hand is a fist. "Remember" he says "Spell out my name with your fingers. If you have a fist and still have one letter left, you used one too many G's." His TV ads telling people that cost a lot of money; probably a fortune. I know a guy whose name is Nosmo King. It isn't clear if people are mispronouncing his name or not. It also is not clear why his parents had to think up a name for him so quick. They got his name from a sign; No Smoking. Parents can be cruel; maybe that's what happened? It's unbelievable how cruel they can be. Enjoyed the vid as always Sincerely, Larry M. Curly

    The 1st time I heard of the band Samhain was when I approached someone wearing a T -shirt. I assumed he was Wiccan and it was referring to the holiday pronounced Sow-en. To this day I'm not sure what the correct pronunciation of the band is. Another common misspronounciation is the Davies brothers. Mazzy confirmed its pronounced "Davis". I had a friend in the 80's who pronounced The The with an E sound instead of the schwa sound. I've always pronounced the Lou Reed album "Transformer" with the accent on the 2nd syllable, but I've heard people accent the 1st, which could be correct because Lou was in his glam period.

    Great video Robert. Another to add to your fine list, BTO...Bachman Turner Overdrive. No not Turner. No not Overdrive. But Mr.Bachman. Randy Back-man is the proper pronunciation, hence it is Backman Turner Overdrive (though I always say BTO anyhow). I was listening to him on a local radio station many years ago, (Cjay92 in Calgary, Ab. Canada) and he jokingly said he and his brother just got tired of correcting Radio Dj's media folks et al, and went with the commonly mispronouncing. I get it. What an awesome topic! 😄👍 I get the same thing a lot with people mispronouncing and misspelling also *my* name, so I often end up telling them, "Just call me 'V'! 🙄" 😄 I've been living in NZ for the past 20 years but had grown up in Germany, so when my Big Bro had brought home Van Halen's debut album one day in '79, we all pronounced them the German way (and just like the Dutch), "Fun Hahlen" - It sounded sooo weird to my ears several years later when their 'Jump!' was a Hit and the radio DJ's pronounced them the American way 😳😅 And being originally German, band names like Queensrÿche and Mötley Crüe had thrown me off back in the day because of the Umlaute 😆 I've also heard 'Depeche Mode' and their lead singer's surname 'Gahan' mispronounced a lot over the years 😄 Bring on Pt.II ! 😁👍 *Edit:* And it was only a few hours ago that I'd heard someone pronounce Midge Ure's surname wrong! 😄

    • @RobertFithen
      @RobertFithen  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The umlaut usage in metal bands was getting ridiculous to the point where they were putting them over letters that didn't even really ever have umlauts. Not to mention the band names were never pronounced in the umlaut manner. For example, wouldn't it technically be "Mertly" instead of "Motley" with the umlaut over the "o".

      I swear anything French throws me for a loop because they don't say half the letters in their words. How the f**k do we know which letters to say and which are silent? I took German in school and I love it because they say everything in the word. None of this wondering if a letter is silent jazz. 🤪

    I call BS on Double, they need an accent grave over the E become I come on board with that prononciation.

    normally names are to read as pronounced in original language or accent , double ,only have the single you showed , but it´s said to be with french accent(that i didn´t knew) ,i think it depends on the country ,in reality the band SHIT ,only started to be pronounced like that after the first two album´s ,when they were a diferent rock band ,mainly the reason david knofler left the band, because his brother mark wanted to make more mainstream music to win more money and it resulted with the third to the last album ,from a shit called band
