Prevent Winter Starvation for Your Honey Bees

  • Warm or temperate days in winter are not the bees or beekeeper's friend. Honey Bees become more active. And activity means expended energy and calories. That means that there is a risk that bees could starve just as they're on the verge of spring.
Many of our hives are mildly active if the temperatures get above 48. And, when temps get above 60, it's an opportunity to make sure they have the food they need to make it through February-March, two months when bees are most likely to starve.
For us, that means a combination of hard sugar bricks and soft sugar bricks. One key point - we like using hard sugar bricks to help wick away moisture above the cluster if there is any box condensation under the inner cover.

Watch your audio levels in production. Your music overwhelmed your voice.
Looking forward to more. I'm about a year behind you and about 4 hours south of you in Hutto, Tx. Started my first colony with a package in April, 2022. After 1 easy cutout and 1 September swarm capture, I'm wintering 3 colonies in Layens hives.

I’m curious - what was your motivation for going Layens over Langstroth?

I certainly think so. :) It’s fun to play with insects that can hurt you. Lol.
