Jorge Voldano famously said “Maradona was Maradona sometimes, Messi is Maradona everyday”. That simply means Messi is incredibly consistent, he’s been at best player level for over 16 years. From everything I’ve seen which only a small percentage were in real time, Maradona wasn’t as ruthless in front of goal, wasn’t as quick or agile, his killer passes not on same level and he wasn’t remotely as consistent. You saw them play but place more value on Maradona because of Nostalgia. My observation is Maradona was a lot more charismatic, that doesn’t mean better. Maybe Maradona would be Messi if he didn’t have all the issues he had outside of football.

I think Maradonna was a wonderful soccer lover. He has been the greatest soccer player of all time. He was the one who managed to master all the technical gestures in soccer. He had all the skills of a strong player. I remember when I was a young watching a match on TV and I was incredibly surprised by Maradona. He was out of the ordinary. He did extraordinary things I have never seen in front of players and goalkeepers. They had no chance to take the ball away from him. I’ve never forgotten Maradona’s technical gestures such as his free kicks, dribbles, the way that he eliminated a player by himself, Flip flap, Maradona's 360°, soccer lob shot, overhead kicks, or taking a dropping ball over head, ect... He did extraordinary things never before seen. Defenders and goalkeepers were afraid when they played against him. His magical skills on the field: Shooting, creation creativity, Swift decision, making Risk , Exclusivity, Technique, Vision, Timing, Physical strength, Tactical intelligence, Positional awareness, Stamina, Accuracy, Self-comp. I will never forget the goal he scored in the world cup against England’s team. In today's soccer world we need players like him because we are feeling that today's players don't have all the qualities that Maradonna had. I see the GREATNESS of Diego Armando Maradona throughout his whole life. He remains in my mind as a exceptional and successful athlete and fighter for good human causes. I don't write here about his skills, abilities or achievements -- that would be enough, but I want to stress here an aspect which is not commonly mentioned, and in my eyes is a big part of the reason, why Maradona transcends sport in such a unique way. One can see the very same pattern in his actions: fight for the less privileged to „even“ the field, against exertion of power to exploit people. He had these ideals as his Leitmotiv and acted consequently without any censorship. How come? Let me illustrate this by picking some of his biggest moves in his life. - Even though he was offered and had the possibility to start his professional career in big teams in Argentina, he stayed *faithful* to his very first club from his youth. He played several years in this team and moved then to his loved Boca Juniors. - After Boca he moved to Europe and played in Barcelona where he got for the first time in direct contact with the real big, big issue his status had (also financially)… For several reasons he was at discomfort in Barcelona (who in that decade started huge financial investments buying the greatest players around… Maradona, Lineker and Schuster as most prominent examples) and opted to move to the best league at that time, the Italian. The brutal rivalry between Bilbao and Barcelona was vividly experienced by Maradona in this time; first by getting his ankle broken after an insane tackle by Goikoetxea, then after this same i***t (and others) hit Maradona repeatedly in an infamous final match where Maradona „took revenge“ and defended his body (and a football without career threatening fouls(!)) with two „k.o.“ (first against Núñez, and then a knee knockout against a Núñez’ „defender“, Sola). As many experts already remarked, football at that time was very different from what we know today: many fouls ended careers and/or did persistent damage on opponents. Maradona vividly fought against this and so contributed to make this sport even better in this aspect. - He could have chosen any top team in Italy, but after his principles and ideas he opted for a move to a team from south Italy, Napoli, with by that time less than mediocre performances in the Italian league, a team from one of the poorest regions in Italy, which have never had a chance to even fight for the Scudetto against the much more powerful teams from the north and richest part of Italy. Again among the „weaker“ he would get the challenge to „fight“ against the more privileged *structures*. He brilliantly succeeded - won two Scudettos with Napoli and one EUFA cup. - The traces are to be found in his life everywhere, even when he did things which the society does not accept in public (as taking drugs). I don’t take drugs and certainly don’t encourage anybody to do so; on the contrary. But, I am also a strong advocate of individuality and as long as you respect other people, don’t wish/do harm to them, I am fine with that - everyone should live his life! None of us is in a position to judge others besides what the law and rules in the sport dictate. Because of both he had his problems and paid for his faults. More importantly in the sport side, even his „doping case“ (USA 1994) was something which, as in the verdict, was unknowingly taken, was removed from the WC and received a ban - from the verdict, it was a supplement bought in Boston without need for recipe which contained 5 variants of ephedrine, which by the way nowadays would not even trigger a positive because the levels (due to not being performance enhancers within WADA limits). In any case, the point I want to make here is, that even the „wrong actions“ Maradona had - as by the way any human being in the planet passing certain early age has -were not bad intentioned neither did any harm to anybody nor took any illegal advantage from others; never ever. - And I conclude with one last action (there are several others, until his death, but time is limited..) after having said, that Maradona never acted with the intention or the will to do harm to other or take illegal advantage: what about the „Hand of God goal“? This may be the only instance where in the life of such an icon (already rare..), where and has to think carefully about it. As he also said in the BBC interview on the matter, one has to put into a socio-political context, what the match England vs Argentina meant. And I would argue, that this extra dimension was not only seen by Argentinians but also by the British people alike. The obvious context was marked by the very, very fresh tensions after the Malvinas/Falkland islands’ military conflict from 1982. Again the same pattern: the poor against the biggest and almost by definition „invincible“ (military) opponent fighting for a cause which is seen by the Argentinians (based on international law) as an injustice, and also as something beyond reach in any concrete sense, acknowledging that power dictates. This is why that historical match between Argentina and England had so much at stake, far beyond sport. In this context, it was certainly the highest priority for Maradona to „make justice“ on the pitch. And if one thinks about it, a mere victory without controversy would have never made explicit the heavy context this match took place in, never. This dimension was revealed by Maradona’s first score. It was a try with a prohibited move in soccer: you cannot score a goal with your hand. But one should not forget, that football, as any other sport, is simply a game with concrete rules. And everybody playing it should know these. The relevant rules here are: the one I already mentioned and a goal is given by the referee (or not) and may be ruled illegal by the referee, and it counts after the team receiving the goal (recognised as legal by the referee) kicks the ball from the field center. Maradona did hit the ball with his left hand (also very skilful, since he did in parallel the precise movement with is head, which would make the corresponding trajectory change of the ball...) and just looked what the reaction of the referee and lineman was…; after that he asked teammates to quickly go back to their field side, and so to make (time) pressure, so that England had to kick off… That was 1:0. That would not have been possible nowadays, but at that time, with the rules from 1986, it was simply a goal - as it was the 1966 goal a goal with the rules from 1966; no animosity or whatsoever, it’s simply following the rules (with the technology from today none of these would have been given as a score: VAR). Furthermore, this, after having mentioned the context, had a much deeper joy, after being humiliated by military strength and power; yes this was Maradona’s personal revenge and message; done on the pitch and for a cause. Four minutes later, as if this had to be part of a Legend, this very same guy scores the greatest goal in the football world cups’ history. The end result was 2:1 with a goal from Gary Lineker - which by the way has tons of things to tell about the match and Maradona himself. In his later years, Maradona struggled a lot with his private life, with people who surrounded him and so on. He showed always deep love and passion for the sport, to the people, to his family. Maradona with all his GENIALITY, VIRTUOSITY, PASSION and LOVE FOR PEOPLE is an example of a human being, precisely *because* he did his „mistakes“ without betraying his „GENIALITY, VIRTUOSITY, PASSION and LOVE FOR PEOPLE“. He was league top scorer 5 times when he played for Argentinos junior in 1976-1980, won the league with Boca in 1981, won various titles with Napoli between 1984-1990. Also won u20 World cup in 1979 and World cup in 1986, reaching final in 1990.

I watched all the Argentina matches of the 1986 world cup when Maradona was perhaps at the peak of his powers. I do not understand why there is even the least bit of doubt about who is the GOAT of football. Of course, it is one and the only Diego Armando Maradona. Actually older balls were heavier and EASIER to control, but they were harder to hit, score with etc. Less swerve etc. Now the balls are lighter and bouncier, leading to way more goals.
@James Styles The heavier ball is easier to control. This is also why many indoor soccer balls are smaller but heavier for their size. Lighter balls are bouncier, harder to keep under control, swerve more. A heavier ball is however, hard to hit and be accurate with and easier on the keeper because of less swerve. Comparing a football to a static pencil weighing 1kg is like saying comparing a football weighing 50kg. The legs can produce a lot more force than a hand. You can actually see this through the statistics from top scorers, keeper saves and world cup stats through out the years. Especially WC's where new balls were for some reason constantly tested in.

Deep down we all know he is by far the greatest football player ever. You can feel the energy, desire and passion. Exquisite passing, running rings around the defenders and then scores magnificent goals (some from impossible angles) time and again. And this upload only shows the Napoli years. He did the business in Mexico '86 to silence the doubters with unmatched genius.

Jorge Voldano famously said “Maradona was Maradona sometimes, Messi is Maradona everyday”. That simply means Messi is incredibly consistent, he’s been at best player level for over 16 years. From everything I’ve seen which only a small percentage were in real time, Maradona wasn’t as ruthless in front of goal, wasn’t as quick or agile, his killer passes not on same level and he wasn’t remotely as consistent. You saw them play but place more value on Maradona because of Nostalgia. My observation is Maradona was a lot more charismatic, that doesn’t mean better. Maybe Maradona would be Messi if he didn’t have all the issues he had outside of football.

I see the GREATNESS of Diego Armando Maradona throughout his whole life. He remains in my mind as a exceptional and successful athlete and fighter for good human causes. I don't write here about his skills, abilities or achievements -- that would be enough, but I want to stress here an aspect which is not commonly mentioned, and in my eyes is a big part of the reason, why Maradona transcends sport in such a unique way.
One can see the very same pattern in his actions: fight for the less privileged to „even“ the field, against exertion of power to exploit people. He had these ideals as his Leitmotiv and acted consequently without any censorship. How come? Let me illustrate this by picking some of his biggest moves in his life.
- Even though he was offered and had the possibility to start his professional career in big teams in Argentina, he stayed *faithful* to his very first club from his youth. He played several years in this team and moved then to his loved Boca Juniors.
- After Boca he moved to Europe and played in Barcelona where he got for the first time in direct contact with the real big, big issue his status had (also financially)… For several reasons he was at discomfort in Barcelona (who in that decade started huge financial investments buying the greatest players around… Maradona, Lineker and Schuster as most prominent examples) and opted to move to the best league at that time, the Italian. The brutal rivalry between Bilbao and Barcelona was vividly experienced by Maradona in this time; first by getting his ankle broken after an insane tackle by Goikoetxea, then after this same i***t (and others) hit Maradona repeatedly in an infamous final match where Maradona „took revenge“ and defended his body (and a football without career threatening fouls(!)) with two „k.o.“ (first against Núñez, and then a knee knockout against a Núñez’ „defender“, Sola). As many experts already remarked, football at that time was very different from what we know today: many fouls ended careers and/or did persistent damage on opponents. Maradona vividly fought against this and so contributed to make this sport even better in this aspect.
- He could have chosen any top team in Italy, but after his principles and ideas he opted for a move to a team from south Italy, Napoli, with by that time less than mediocre performances in the Italian league, a team from one of the poorest regions in Italy, which have never had a chance to even fight for the Scudetto against the much more powerful teams from the north and richest part of Italy. Again among the „weaker“ he would get the challenge to „fight“ against the more privileged *structures*. He brilliantly succeeded - won two Scudettos with Napoli and one EUFA cup.
- The traces are to be found in his life everywhere, even when he did things which the society does not accept in public (as taking drugs). I don’t take drugs and certainly don’t encourage anybody to do so; on the contrary. But, I am also a strong advocate of individuality and as long as you respect other people, don’t wish/do harm to them, I am fine with that - everyone should live his life! None of us is in a position to judge others besides what the law and rules in the sport dictate. Because of both he had his problems and paid for his faults. More importantly in the sport side, even his „doping case“ (USA 1994) was something which, as in the verdict, was unknowingly taken, was removed from the WC and received a ban - from the verdict, it was a supplement bought in Boston without need for recipe which contained 5 variants of ephedrine, which by the way nowadays would not even trigger a positive because the levels (due to not being performance enhancers within WADA limits). In any case, the point I want to make here is, that even the „wrong actions“ Maradona had - as by the way any human being in the planet passing certain early age has -were not bad intentioned neither did any harm to anybody nor took any illegal advantage from others; never ever.
- And I conclude with one last action (there are several others, until his death, but time is limited..) after having said, that Maradona never acted with the intention or the will to do harm to other or take illegal advantage: what about the „Hand of God goal“? This may be the only instance where in the life of such an icon (already rare..), where and has to think carefully about it. As he also said in the BBC interview on the matter, one has to put into a socio-political context, what the match England vs Argentina meant. And I would argue, that this extra dimension was not only seen by Argentinians but also by the British people alike. The obvious context was marked by the very, very fresh tensions after the Malvinas/Falkland islands’ military conflict from 1982. Again the same pattern: the poor against the biggest and almost by definition „invincible“ (military) opponent fighting for a cause which is seen by the Argentinians (based on international law) as an injustice, and also as something beyond reach in any concrete sense, acknowledging that power dictates. This is why that historical match between Argentina and England had so much at stake, far beyond sport. In this context, it was certainly the highest priority for Maradona to „make justice“ on the pitch. And if one thinks about it, a mere victory without controversy would have never made explicit the heavy context this match took place in, never. This dimension was revealed by Maradona’s first score. It was a try with a prohibited move in soccer: you cannot score a goal with your hand. But one should not forget, that football, as any other sport, is simply a game with concrete rules. And everybody playing it should know these. The relevant rules here are: the one I already mentioned and a goal is given by the referee (or not) and may be ruled illegal by the referee, and it counts after the team receiving the goal (recognised as legal by the referee) kicks the ball from the field center. Maradona did hit the ball with his left hand (also very skilful, since he did in parallel the precise movement with is head, which would make the corresponding trajectory change of the ball...) and just looked what the reaction of the referee and lineman was…; after that he asked teammates to quickly go back to their field side, and so to make (time) pressure, so that England had to kick off… That was 1:0. That would not have been possible nowadays, but at that time, with the rules from 1986, it was simply a goal - as it was the 1966 goal a goal with the rules from 1966; no animosity or whatsoever, it’s simply following the rules (with the technology from today none of these would have been given as a score: VAR). Furthermore, this, after having mentioned the context, had a much deeper joy, after being humiliated by military strength and power; yes this was Maradona’s personal revenge and message; done on the pitch and for a cause. Four minutes later, as if this had to be part of a Legend, this very same guy scores the greatest goal in the football world cups’ history. The end result was 2:1 with a goal from Gary Lineker - which by the way has tons of things to tell about the match and Maradona himself.
In his later years, Maradona struggled a lot with his private life, with people who surrounded him and so on. He showed always deep love and passion for the sport, to the people, to his family.
Maradona with all his GENIALITY, VIRTUOSITY, PASSION and LOVE FOR PEOPLE is an example of a human being, precisely *because* he did his „mistakes“ without betraying his „GENIALITY, VIRTUOSITY, PASSION and LOVE FOR PEOPLE“.

I watched all the Argentina matches of the 1986 world cup when Maradona was perhaps at the peak of his powers. I do not understand why there is even the least bit of doubt about who is the GOAT of football. Of course, it is one and the only Diego Armando Maradona. Keep in mind that the balls they've been using in the 80's were way more difficult to control....mindblowing talent.
Actually older balls were heavier and EASIER to control, but they were harder to hit, score with etc. Less swerve etc. Now the balls are lighter and bouncier, leading to way more goals.

Lighter balls are bouncier, harder to keep under control, swerve more. A heavier ball is however, hard to hit and be accurate with and easier on the keeper because of less swerve. Comparing a football to a static pencil weighing 1kg is like saying comparing a football weighing 50kg. The legs can produce a lot more force than a hand. You can actually see this through the statistics from top scorers, keeper saves and world cup stats through out the years. Especially WC's where new balls were for some reason constantly tested in.
