- Pionus parrots are awesome! But they are different than most New World parrots, they don’t bond as deeply as most. Should you get to? Is it important? Do the species matter, or can you mix Pionus species?

Pionus are very rare here in Ontario Canada. I have heard that they are very nice and calm birds. Thanks for sharing!

I have a Blue Headed P. He was given away from the breeder to early and was hand reared - so not fully socialized. He is an absolute human addicted bird but when he left his teenager life with 3.5 years he started to be constantly unsatisfied. That was the time I took him from his old owner. After a couple of months I got a same age lady for him. First week's I was convinced he will not became a real bird but after two month he get his head scratches from her and he is feeding her every day. There was no break in my relationship to him and he is now happy and in some way complete.
So I do highly recommend to have a partner bird (and same age seems to be important)
And by the way keeping parrots alone with no partner is even prohibited here in my country
I’m happy for your Pionus, he is so fortunate you got him another. Yes, I’ve heard a couple countries require you have two. It should be that way every where

It's in Germany. I think there are also other similar countries in EU
My Blue Headed Pionus is my Velcro Bird 😂. If I'm in the shower and don't take him with me, he waits outside the door and barks. He has me trained to pick him up and carry him around. We have other parrots as well, My Pionus loves our White Fronted Amazon. He follows him around trying to feed him and just annoying the White Fronted 🤣🤣🤣. They do preen each other.

I've had my pionus for about a month now (he's a rescue and there's some confusion as to his age, somewhere between 1-5 years) and I have to say he seems to be very easy going with other birds. I was worried he wouldn't get along with our budgies but so far there have been no problems at all. I wouldn't say that they interact a lot with each other but they don't mind hanging out in the same space and I get the feeling that even if they're not exactly best friends he appreciates their company. Still, I think I'll want a second pionus eventually so he gets a 'real' friend.
Yes, that was my experience too. I’m not sure if my Pionus parrots will ever bond though - maybe because they are both male, not sure.

Have just been given yet another white capped piones. One is 1.2 months old, the other 7 months. Think two males, will see situation later on as birds grow up.
With other birds- they change their sex according to the needs of the flock (parakeets/cockatiels) - unsure if here as well?
Also- as they do not have a preening gland- just spritz / spray him with water or suggest a bigger dish with water for him to bathe in?

I'm in MI and there is occasionally a breeder in Holly Michigan. I was lucky and found my boy at a surrender.
Do you think that's ok only having an amazon (blue-fronted) and a golden conure? (I'm most worried about the golden conure)
Might work ok - My Golden and Orange-winged Amazon are crazy about each other
