    My gcc is also named Kiwi and I had the EXACT issue. The “reputable” shop said he was healthy, he came with an infection and there was all the vet visits and meds and extra care for the next 6 month. I loved him to bits but he still passed away and it’s so painful to see him go. I wish your Kiwi lives a long happy life with you. He’s so lucky to have you as his owner

    This is why it’s so so so so important to do your research and support reputable breeders in your area or even ones that ship via airlines! (NOT via usps or ups or fedex that is 100% unsafe and if anyone ever says that they can ship through those, RUN) I’m so glad you learned from this experience! I’m so glad he found you guys and that you saved him. Pet stores even when owned by a family or group of people doesn’t mean they’ll be good. People like to make that comparison all the time but it’s just not the truth. Pets stores can be backyard breeders (or work hand in hand with them) just as much as a regular backyard breeders selling babies from their houses. It’s important to make sure they’re licensed. Good breeders will know the hatch date, the age, the mutation, the parents mutations and parents parents mutations as well as splits of any kind. Good breeders with have their babies checked by the vet and they’ll likely provide you with a clean bill of health. All this being said, you’ll likely spend a couple hundred more when you get a bird from a good breeder but this is because they’re quality! They spend more money to keep the babies safe, happy and healthy and in turn they have to charge more for the babies they sell.

    • @kiwiscorner3832
      @kiwiscorner3832  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am agreed 100%! IF we go baby bird again, we NOW know what to look for in a breeder/seller! Your points were spot on with what we have learned! I was very interested to see you say the shipment methods...but it totally makes sense! Thanks for that information!).

    i am very ashamed i got my gcc at petco. but after 6 months of going in to get crickets and dancing with her i had to take her home with me. it wasnt fair to her to watch the budgies go home and she gets to stay in the TUBE, she was in a tube shaped plastic cage with all seed diet. she did come with some paper work though so i am glad of that.
    after i got her they had 3 cockatiels in there and they "got adopted", and then 4 more also "got adopted". i made friends with one of the employees and she said all those birds died.

      @@kiwiscorner3832 This is an unfortunate conundrum. And my wife and I both succumb to this problem. You cannot be a savior when encountering these mistreated animals. It only results in moving "stock" for the pets store and encouraging their breeding for sale in these stores. You must leave them and not give your money to them for the good of all the rest that will surely come after they make profit off of it. It's a hard thing to do, but DO NOT BUY even if you feel you are "rescuing". I understand that was not your case but for the rest of the viewers here, please. Just don't.

    i have a male green cheek conure and a pineapple conure i had to buy together as theyre a mating couple to which my female conure had 5 eggs. anyway i only had to give my post/zip code , address number and my full name. they are the best and gorgeous. my green cheek is a lot louder and is the one to say "hay we want food and we want it now" i love that he does that. i love it too when my green conure is on a meltdown and my pineapple conure tells him to shut up. they are so special and so indvidual. my birds dont like fingers but they are so playful in other ways. they to me are unique and i dont want them to change. is it like they dont go on my finger a serious thing? id love them to go onto my finger. am i bothered , no they are what they both are and what they both are is all that means to me. they can be the c word but so can any pet. do my conures bite yes but are they loving too yes. they give love in their own way. a bite to them will be hay where is my dinner if they have waited a few hours they get angry like we do and they too let us know when we have done right. would i change them er no. i like my parrots for what they are.

I went back one week later to ask about a certain little behavior and found that the pet store was no longer there. Nearby other stores had no idea where the pet store had moved to. After my bird developed arthritis the vet keeps asking how old he is. If I wasn't lied to then he is 14 years old and has had his arthritis for at least three years. I keep wondering how old Simon really is. Even a vet cannot tell how old a bird is between maturity and very old age. I love my Simon with all my heart and do not regret getting him.

    One could say I technically rescued my GCC from another owner. They haven't even had her for a full year and were already trying to resell her just to get a different bird. She was hand raised at a specialty bird store but the kids in her former home picked on her and she became aggressive. She gets extremely hostile whenever my niece is visiting, even if my niece pays no attention to her. It took me three months after getting her to get her to stop biting. She used to just bite so hard to where she'd draw blood each time, but now she favors me and gets upset when anyone else comes too close to her. I got official documents on her registered leg band and everything. However, when I was about to get her, the former owners told me they were about to clip her wings and I begged them not to. When I went to meet them and her for the first time, they went to show me she could fly by throwing her straight into the air, and I watched in horror as she panicked to find a place to land. I bought her immediately and took her home. To this day, she's terrified of flying. I will never clip her wings but she's a lot happier now, spoiled, and loved. She was barely 8 months old when I got her and it must have been terrifying to have people you're absolutely afraid of just throwing you in the air to showcase how you fly. Now if she wants to go anywhere, she'll navigate around without flying. I try to get her to try on her own with treats but so far it's not motivating enough.

    I was visiting petsmart stores really wanting a conure but One was very fearful of humans and One was hella old and missing feathers and last one we met looked sick and Injured foot?. So our last try was visiting a bird breeder. It was really clean there! The birds were hand fead bird formula and My conure was very tamed 8 week old and very healthy too! :)).The breeder was very easy to contact and was very aware about giving away her birds since she didnt like to sell them to pet stores as much. So I definitely recommended people looking on craiglist to see if any home breeder people have healthy birds up for sale! If they are hand fed since the beginning they should be really tamed and have great relationships with people :D

    The exact same thing is happening to my parent's bird right now. He developed a bald spot around a month or two ago and his treatments have cost us more than the bird actually. My siblings and I saved all our money to purchase this bird for my mother's birthday last June. Before the infection around August of last year after we got him, he began to get sick. He kept throwing up and we immediately took him to the vet. Not only were we taking him for the sickness but we also discovered that he had a broken wing. The poor bird, only 3 months old was going to have to live his entire life with an abnormal wing causing his flight feathers to grow way slower than normal and unable to fly normal. I'm just so unsure on what to do but I feel like this is so horrible for not only my family who absolutely loves their bird but for the pets.

    • @kiwiscorner3832
      @kiwiscorner3832  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Don't feel bad. You guys took care of the infection. The bald spot I hope went away with that treatment (if it's bald from a hard molt offer baths). I'm also assuming the broken wing has healed. So what, he may have an abnormal wing! He may always have a bald spot. He is loved and if he isn't in pain, he is living his best life!!!!! You rescued him from a worse fate!

    Pet stores that don't breed birds take birds from anonymous places. People that give them away, breeder birds or something abnormal like that. It's pretty hard for these birds to get adopted because they don't have paperwork of their previous owner nor are fully tamed. I know it sucks that this lady found out the hard way but in reality it would've been a hard time for this bird to get adopted. Who knows how long it was sitting in that pet shot without a companion. Parrots are monogamous; they really really feel affection when it's given. Al least she has the bird now, if the bird was given all it's real historic details I don't think that woman would've bought it....who knows how much longer I'd be in that pet store sadly. My local pet store had a few birds like that, in particular an Amazon I clearly remember as a kid. I saw that Amazon in a glass panel tucked away every time I visited that pet shop. He was really old too and kept to himself...sadly.

    I got my green cheek conure from Petco aware that it probably wasn't the best place though I heard that the breeder they got conures from was good. I could have gotten it from a better place but I was struggling with several neurolopsychological issues and that would have been too difficult for me (too many forms, people to talk to, etc plus I needed it asap). I bought it and I was disappointed to find that its wings had been clipped almost too far - although admittedly that did help with adjusting it to its new life. And the poor thing had been chewing on its tail, likely out of stress and/or loneliness. At least it was fairly tame though, because one of the petco workers spent time with it. I looked up the breeder that was listed on it's small bit of paperwork and it seemed like a big breeder... 😅 Fast forward eight months and my conure is THRIVING - it is currently preening on my hand, very comfortable, almost fully flighted and its tail is BEAUTIFUL. And yes, it definitely helps as an emotional support - every day this bird makes me laugh and smile and calms me. It is very silly, playful, somewhat shy, affectionate, loyal but not too dependent, and is probably on the noisier side for a green cheek (they're known for being quiet but not this bird lol - but I love it honestly. And it is a sign that my bird is comfortable now - when I first got it, it was so shy it barely made a sound). I think that I rescued this little sweetie bird in a way. It certainly lives a better life than it used to :') It even bonded very tightly with my family's English budgie - they're almost inseparable now!
    I'm not happy about the way petco gets their birds and there are definitely cons to how you can buy one of these beautiful sensitive creatures so easily (some people don't take good care of these birds, although due to awareness about parrots and online information I think the amount of people like that is decreasing), but at least for me it was a story with a happy outcome for both me (it helps me) and my bird (that is thriving now) :')

      He makes a great pet! He is quite interactive and ours is quite silly. They take time. I'm not going to lie. To make his life satisfying we keep a ton of toys for him and try to have him out as much as possible with us (minimum of 2-3 hours each evening). A bored unhappy bird is a bird that will give you trouble (loud, biting, etc). The only other thing....they can be messy! WE have his main perch sitting inside a laundry drop pan to catch the mess....and the other perches and areas he hangs out in I spread old sheets to contain some of the mess.

      Try to adopt in your area. Many people surrender birds because they require a lot of care, can be loud, and they live a long time (with proper care). They need to be given attention, need to have their cages cleaned, and need stimulation. My birds get a lot of attention, eat fresh veggies/with healthy seeds. They are free flying in our home and get a lot of time out of their cages. I also make sure they get plenty of toys to chew on. Just like dogs, they need the same care (or more) and love toys they can destroy. I would recommend doing research before you buy/adopt. There is a lot of good informative content on TH-cam. Good luck!

      How is your bird? Trust your vet....they are the experts. (And if you don't trust them...find another avian board certified vet to go to!) Kiwi got over the infection...and was checked out afterwards with new skin tests to show that the infection was gone. HOWEVER he still has bald spots more than a year later. IT is combination of two things ......(backed up by a board certified Avian vet). 1. He sleeps with his head up against one of his cage bars...so he really does have 'bed head'. 2. We just needed to be more religious about giving him baths. The vet said every other day while he had bald spots and then maybe going down to 2-3 times if it's looking good. AND...the vet said he may just not grow feathers in that spot.....it might just be a quirk and that it will not affect him at all! Just makes him special!

    I just came across your video. I have several things that I'd like to point out to you. 1. Not all breeders are reputable, and not all pet stores work with pet mills. Also. Hand-fed birds can be afraid of fingers. So, you saying that he wasn't hand-fed, might not have been true. He could have been, and was still afraid of fingers. The fact that he wanted to be with Jason, and was focused on him, means that he was most definitely hand-fed. Because non-hand-fed birds would not focus on any human for anything, and would never be able to be tamed. I myself own a Conure. A GoldCap, larger Conure. She's not banded. She came from a bird store in Sacramento. Personally, I trust PetSmart more than I do PetCo, because PetSmart employees are much more caring than PetCo. I wouldn't go assuming that the bird wasn't hand-fed, because he's afraid. I also wouldn't go assuming anything about the paperwork, because someone might have bought, and then returned the bird, and sometimes, those people who return the bird after buying, don't return the paperwork with the bird. You need to understand that not all pet mills are bad. The large chain pet stores, PetSmart, PetCo, Pet SuperMarket, PetLand, Pet Station ... etc etc, they have vets that see the animals when they get to the store from wherever they were shipped. Sometimes, birds get infections from other birds, or from humans who don't wash their hands after handling other animals. Sometimes, molting leads to infections. I'm 27 years old. I've owned birds, all types of birds, ever since I was 4. I'm sorry for coming at you some type of way, but you shouldn't right out accuse a pet store of lying, when you don't know all of the facts. But maybe, they just didn't know. Yeah, the run-around thing was uncalled for. You can't criticize all pet stores for the actions of just 1. I'm sorry. Also. What do you meed your Conure? Do not feed any fruits/veggies. Despite what anyone says, fruits/veggies are not good for them. Feed pellets, seeds, nuts, bits of dry fruits/veggies. Avocado, chocolate, dairy, caffine, alcohol, are toxic. Nonstick cookware of any kind is toxic. smoking anything around birds is toxic. If you have any questions, please feel free, and let me know. Thank you.

      @kiwiscorner3832  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      OH ,I totally believe that our bird was hand fed. But he was not treated with kindness and love. That much was obvious from his behavior. He was definitely around humans though. As for the pet store....no definitely not all are bad. There is one that is a couple hours away that we go to and they are transparent about where they get their animals and the breeders and the inspections that they do. I would trust them. I just know that the pet store that WE got Kiwi from.......very un-reputable. I wish I had done more research before I bought from them. We caught them in so many lies it was ridiculous! The vet when we took the bird actually told us...'this bird has had a hard life in his first 9 months". I think that is what I was trying to get across in my video......to do your research.....know where you are getting the bird from!!!!

      @@kiwiscorner3832 I would have assumed so, it really does suck that mills are so relevant in today's pet adoption..I feel where you are coming from because a lot of people don't have the time or energy to deal with sick animals, but I specialize in reptiles and avian so I would feel it necessary to rescue as many animals as I can no matter the circumstances...I've taken care of many many many sick animals and I don't regret a dime that I've spent being there for them when nobody else would. Birds don't usually come with paperwork. Especially from a pet store. The more expensive the bird the more likely they buyer will want gender, age, and get records. But normally they don't and aren't required to. Pet mills for birds are also normal. If it was only on reliable breeders to give people birds then something small like a parakeet would be like 100 dollars. And I know because if you check online on like bird breeders. Com normal parakeets co fed are being told for 100 dollars. Bird mills make it so petco can buy birds in bulk and sell them to the general populations. Almost all birds come from pet mills and even small time breeders who can't find someone to buy there birds end up selling to pet shops. I think having pet shops and breeders have papers would be great and some do it because they think they should, but I still don't think it should be required and to say you're ashamed your bird came from a pet mill is a bit insensitive to everyone who's ever got there bird from anywhere other than a small time breeder. I think you should have returned the bird and if they didn't take it back for lying then you take them to small claims and make them pay for the vet bill or give you your money back and take the bird. Before you buy a bird you should have enough money to take care of it or you are a bad owner. So you shouldn't call him 2 times. You should just call him by his name and be responsible and the correct approach in dealing with the situation. I dislike bird people like you and your husband. If you're going buy a bird do it after studying the breed and understanding their general behavior. You'd probably see the signs of being sick and inform the per shop. But instead you blamed and spent on a vet and called for something most birds don't have. People like you shouldn't buy birds.

      We wouldn't have purchased the bird had we not the means to properly care for the bird. We took our brand new to us bird immediately to the vet...numerous time and spared no cost. And most likely saved our precious bird from dying. Did I blindly trust the pet store. Absolutely. Is that what I was trying to convey in my video...YES. Don't just blindly trust the seller.

      I appreciate additional contest around the petmills and how birds trafecing works But i dont' agree with your insensive comments blaming the victim.
      This is a client that trusted a professional lying crook. She was mislead in believing the sick bird was perfectly healthy. And that doesnt bother you?

    • @localdopedude8818
      @localdopedude8818 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@khalidjaii2 of course it bothers me. I say as much in my comment. I would prefer pet shops know what wrong with their birds if anything. But instead of "saving" that birds life. They should have returned the bird and placed the burden on the lying crook. OR got the help kiwi needed and then asked the shop to pay for it and if they didn't take them to court. Not make a video about how she saved a birds life and how he had a bad life before. She doesn't know if he had a bad life before she only knows it's ill. Birds at a young age get sick for many reasons. I'm upset she blames the pet mill then blames the shop. When she had responsibility of the impulse buy. She had no prior knowledge of the breed or symptoms of a sick bird. She just bought it on a whim. You can't control the crook shop, but you can control your impulses. So I'm shaming her on her actions. The one's we know. If we're bringing up "what ifs" like the one she was about how his life bad before she got him (which she has no proof of) someone who knew the breed and had knowledge on the situation could have easily came in after her and told the shop owner it was sick or bought it and taken the appropriate actions. That's what I'm saying. Take responsibility and don't talk about things you don't know about. And that goes for the crook shop too. Take responsibility for the sick bird and don't talk about it's health when you don't know about it.

    I’m sorry, but what did you expect from a commercial pet store? If people stopped buying pets from pet stores they’d stop selling pets. Of course they are getting their animals from pet mills. They get them cheap that way.

      That is exactly why I put this video out there. We weren't looking for a pet/bird. We were picking up something else for a different pet and this bird went crazy excited every time Jason got close. The bird chose us and after talking about it all day long we caved (in fairness, a bird had been on our list of pets to get sometime in the future...but we were not looking at that point).

  • @KittenBowl1

    Sorry you have encountered this horrible experience. But I have had a number of pets in my life including a beautiful bird, I think a pet store is the number one place to avoid for not only birds but also dogs and cats. Pet shop animals = pet mill animals to most animal lovers. I’m sorry that you didn’t know this fact. I think pet shop preys on people like you, a novice animal first time pet owner of pure breed or exotic animals. You’re not only getting poor health and poor gene animals that have been treated horribly for generations, but you’re also getting ripped off. They charge double or triple the breeder charges for the quality they sell. And if they’re on sale, you can 100% assume that the animal is very sick and they want to get rid of it. As far as we’re concerned, pet shops should never be allowed to sell any live animals but only supplies and food. This goes for fish and small animals like rabbits and hamsters as well. You can assume 99%+ that all animals at a pet shop come from very dirty horribly conditioned pet mills.
