This video is amazing. I’ve had radiculopathy for over 9 years and am fed up with the GPs pushing me around with neck exercises. As of today, am waiting a call from the doc and at least have a X-ray or MRI to see what happened. The pain has increased over the last 3 months and it’s stopping me from normal functioning 😢. I do not want surgery, I’ve looked after spinal cord injury patients. But that’s probably why I am with spine issues now☹️
9 year oh god plz switch ur doctor and go for mri u need it 9 years means serious complication already started. with exercise u can only cure if it is initial stage
This video helped bring clarity to what cervical radiculopathy is. Is was assaulted on September 23rd by multiple ppl. I had a black eye and a bump on my forehead. That night I was experiencing severe pain in my left trapezes area. I went to the hospital the next day and did a CAT scan. They said I had a concussion but no fractures. I finally went to see a neurologist and the a physical therapist because my left hand kept going numb. And my lower neck was killing me. The physical therapist told me it’s radiculopathy. He said it was from the assault. I hope therapy helps. I want to avoid neck surgery at all costs. But I feel like nothing else will really get rid of the pain. 😔😔
@@epmanualphysicaltherapy good evening dr. I noticed a pain in my neck that radiate to my right arm, forearm, and my fingers. If I turn my neck to the right I feel more of the pain. Its been for 2 years now going off and on. What can I do? Thanks
i was doing heavy shrugs at the gym and suddenly felt a sharp stabbing pain down my neck n between my shoulder blades. since then i have had this problem, it did not progress to numbness in the hands much but i do feel it when i do some of your exercises. after physiotherapy it made no difference. your explanation has been the only thing that has made sense
After almost a year of neck stiffness, and now pain, and a few months of ineffective physio, I just started chiro sessions for this condition... this is a very helpful explanation, thank you!
Hey 1969, we are so sorry to hear that you've been suffering from neck stiffness and pain! We hope that you can find some relief soon! We'd love to hear how you are doing as you progress.🙌 Please take care!
Hi Dr David, what exercises would you recommend for cervical radiculopathy? I’m a mess w/ muscular dysfunction. Now my upper traps/levator are working for my shoulder stabilizers. So needless to say I have cervical/thoracic issues also w/my ribcage. Love your video on this. Wish you lived closer.
I’ve been trying to avoid surgery for 10 years, I finally found Gyrotonics, but only the past 9 months, also an amazing medical massage therapist. However I found your videos this morning and I’m feeling immediate relief from my stenosis and shortening disc from C5 to T1. Amazing channel ❤
The most concise and informative description of cervical ridiculopathy and it's related conditions that I've seen to date, thank you. Are the exercises required for CR the same as for cervical stenosis? I'm waiting to see a spinal team and want to start correcting my muscle imbalances gradually, in the right way.
Hey Emma, great question! And yes, the best exercises for cervical radiculopathy are the cervical stenosis exercises. Here is a link to our playlist for cervical stenosis in case you would like to learn more: “Cervical (Neck) Stenosis Help” th-cam.com/play/PLJVIPiFvv1mbB6MFKdws1vpjbW_jyXB5y.html
I was 100% certain I had a rotator cuff problem, having had an accident 15yrs ago riding my bmx bike. Saw the shoulder dr he said everything looked and functions fine. I was shocked when he said it was a cervical problem, sent me to nuerologist, found a large herniated disc C6-C7. They want to do surgery on it, cut out pieces of bone. I've been doing physical therapy for a month now, it's helped alot, but idk about longevity.. I am still losing sensation and motor function. scares the hell out of me. This video was very informative, and reinforcing what I was told from my neurologist and surgeons.
Thank you so much for the explanation! I read and watched so much info for my numbness and tingling and pain, but now I finally understand exactly the source of the issue. I am going back to the doc armed with information!
Thank you so much, You explain in such an easy-to-understand way. I fell Sept18. 2022. Ended up having to have surgery to repair torn rotary cuff and torn bicep November 10th. Now my left arm/neck is painful due to overuse, due to not being able to use my right side. Shooting pain in my elbow forearm I realize it is coming from elsewhere. I will do these exercises. It has been extremely painful.

@@epmanualphysicaltherapy thank you for telling us about the other upload! I’m going to subscribe and look at more things on your channel. I’ve recently received this diagnosis; not sure if it’s a cause or affect of the 20+ years I’ve had of repetitive strain issues involving my trapezius and chronic neck strain. Hopefully an updated MRI can tell info as to whether it’s also having stenosis or not.
Fantastic outline and detailed explanation of possible neck issues. Really interesting to discover potential weakness of scalene muscles. Thank you so much for this video!!
Yes, I think you nailed it! You are really so amazing and I enjoy learning from you so very much! I wish you were here in our town so I could just run over and meet you and get your opinion on some things! Keep it coming! And I’m sharing as much as I can with others! 🎯☺️
Best video ever. Thank you so much for your time with this. I have c5c6 herniation and tried everything to avoid surgery, but the nerve pain was so so bad, I finally did surgery.
Thanks Doc! very informative and it's related conditions that I've been suffering right now. And the worse thing is my left shoulder is super weak and a lot of muscle lost and I can't use for grabbing anything . I had my MRI last week and waiting for the report. Doc. any advise on my current situation? I really don't want to go to surgery if possible. Thank you very much!
This was very helpful. My physio therapist said those muscles were weak and gave me exercises to do to strengthen them. I have the symptoms you described.
Thank you so much for your detailed explanations. After a time of pain I can finally understand this condition and see some hope for better days. Many greetings from Susanne
I have permanent loss of sensation in my neck from repeated barbell squats with barbell resting on my spine, and the referred pain in my shoulder blade is much better now
Hey Chuck! There are many ways to strengthen these muscles, but generally speaking we try to get people to perform a good chin tuck! We show this in a few of our videos. Here is a link to one of the videos that shows this exercise: "How To Fix Cervical Stenosis Without Surgery | 3 Simple Exercises" th-cam.com/video/j_TerRaVCto/w-d-xo.html
been dealing with this for a year and a half, my pcp said it was fibromylagia and even put me on meds for it, off them now, did physical therapy after getting an xray at a spine doctor, got a shot in the neck, its getting better little by little but i have tried everything. even since this started ive experienced tinnitus, everyone says it isnt linked but it has to be, im 37 and made it this long now all the sudden my hearing is going while my neck is injured,
Thank you so much for explaining where and why pain occurs. I'm only 6 months out from L4/L5 Laminectomy and Fusion when my arm started throbbing and my fingers (Thumb to half of my middle finger) have constant pins & needles and my arm and fingers are quite cold. Definitely tipping my head back causes shooting pains and cramps. At least now I have an understanding with what may be going on.
Thank you Doctor… I always appreciate your videos. You are consistently so thorough, and you talk in lay terms that we can all understand, a big shout out to you and your team for making these videos. God bless you, sir.❤
Hi Maureen. It's not common for a PT to recommend a 30-week care plan for cervical radiculopathy, as typical treatment durations range from 4 to 6 weeks. We don’t know the details of your situation so you may need it. However, given the extended timeframe, seeking a second opinion might provide clarity on your situation. If you're interested, we have a neck pain help playlist that might offer some relief, but it's essential to discuss your concerns further with a healthcare provider. You can access it here: “Neck Pain Help” th-cam.com/play/PLJVIPiFvv1mZRNE4rwpxvE_tM1na_9kAm.html “Cervical (Neck) Radiculopathy AKA Pinched Nerve” th-cam.com/play/PLJVIPiFvv1manKbw3k73XoT7_h9RPkKFF.html We wish you a speedy recovery and encourage you to explore all your options. Once again your fantastic videos have fixed a huge problem for me that no one else could. I have severe osteoarthritis in my neck that's been confirmed by an incidental finding in a CT scan, x-rays and have had pain running down from my shoulder into my hand for years. Months of PT did very little. A few weeks ago I watched and studied 2 of your neck videos doing them at least once daily. By correcting muscle imbalances in the front of my neck I've gotten astounding results and continue to improve daily. Thank you so much Dr. David for your brilliance and kind heart that has helped me and so many other people. Also I want to mention through your wonderful TH-cam channel how I was able to completely turn around my painful, 14 year old TKR by strengthening my glutes, abs and laying off the quad strengthening. Furthermore, since correcting these muscles imbalances and having the proper strength in areas where I need it I have been able to stave off bilateral great toe fusions. I can't wait to sign up for your back wellness program, and once my husband has his other TKR underway sign him up for your knee wellness program.
Hey Barb, so sorry to hear that your neck osteoarthritis was causing pain in your shoulder and hand as well :-( We are so glad that our content has helped relieve this pain and restore balance to your muscles! Thanks much for this information, can you please please help advise on how to treat muscle imbalance causing Cervical Radiculopathy (Scaling and Neck Muscles)?
I fell down and started having muscle stiffness in right trap muscle and numbness in last two fingers of right hand for first 2 months i didnt went to hospital i thought it would go away later on pain started to increase more and i visited one doctor he said that i was suffering from trapezius tendonitis and it would go away from 3rd month i started having twitchings all over body but they are not painful they would just come and go and pain wasnt going away so after 6 months from falling down i visited many doctors they all would say it is just muscle stiffness nothing serious with it and it would go away but 1 doctor suggested to go for MRI for cervical spine so i went and i found that i have mild disc bulge in c3-c4 segment, loss of cervical lordosis and multilevel partial disc changes so pain from right hand has spread to left hand as well and i even went to massages for pain relief for almost 5-6 sittings , no other symptoms are there and my vitamin D level, vitamin b12 levels are good and i even went for thyroid blood test it is also good as of now pain almost seems to be gone in both hands but few times my last two fingers go numb after waking up from sleep in both hands and muscle twitchings are still there and they are coming all over body. Can anyone please suggest what should i do now..?
Do you plan on making a program for Cervical Radiculopathy like the ones for the knee and the back? I do plan on having that 1 on 1 30-minute talk with you since I do have Cervical Radiculopathy caused by protruded disks on the C5-C6-C7 which causes pains down the rhomboids and upper traps and in between shoulder blades.

Thank you so much! I have everything you described in this video! My PT says it’s not just my neck but ALSO my rotator cuff. (Can’t do internal rotation)Question: how does a practitioner determine if the neck is causing my deltoid /arm/trap/ etc. pain as opposed to the rotator cuff? I know the nerves can cause referred pain. I would love to see a related video! You have helped me tremendously. 💛
Hey Jessica! Thank you for sharing your experience with us, we are so sorry to hear that you're dealing with everything in the video. We can only imagine how this has affected your quality of life. Very helpful video. Had an issue with numbness and tingling intermittently last year and it went away with some PT, only this time, it’s back and more severe. I basically have every symptom you listed related to cervical radiculopathy in C6. Do you have a video or recommendations for exercises to help fix the muscle imbalance you mentioned? Thank you!
Thank you for your video. I have 2 herniated discs at C6 and C7 level with cervical radiculopathy going down the arm (pain and tingling sensation in fingers). You mention in this and other videos that nerve pain can cause deferred pain in the shoulder etc. How about in and around the shoulder blade (this is my main problem that keeps me awake at night). What kind of exercises do you recommend for that? Thank you in advance!
Thank you for the great video. I’ll try to describe my issue concisely. I’ve had a herniated disc at c5-c6 level for almost 2 months. The acute pain has been mostly gone at about week 5-6, but around same time I developed a muscle weakness, especially in the bicep and somewhat in the shoulder. Tricep not affected at all. I know it because I’ve been to the gym a couple of times during this time period and my injured bicep was considerably behind my non injured one. Shoulder also behind, but not as much. I also feel like my entire injured side (right) feels sore and heavy. And in addition, I also developed a small dent in the right trap, which I assume is muscular atrophy. My ortho surgeon said my herniation is relatively small, and I am not a candidate for a surgery, at least for now. He thinks with PT, I should fully recover. I’ve had sciatica and cervical radiculopathy before, but I never developed muscle atrophy and weakness. My biggest fear is that this is permanent or very long term. Do you have any insight about that? Can nerve damage from a relatively small cervical disc herniation be permanent? Any advice would be highly appreciated!
I think the key is to get the disc to stop compressing.the nerves. I was trying to see if their was a nerve glide. I'm staying away from Chiros lf they adjust something and make it worse
So my "knee" ortho said stenosis. I went nerve test. They said it looked mild chronic dmg. I feel this video matches my symptoms way way more. Same treatment? My scalens right on the left side only. I had a winged scapula but fixed it! Help a lot. I just want to be able to lift pain free again.
I have tingling in my face arms and legs. Do you think this is more likely to be pinched nerves or damage to spinal cord? I have neck pain at the bottom of my skull as well.
Hi Thomas, we are sorry to hear that you now having neck issues due to bulging discs! It can be challenging to deal with. If you'd like we have a playlist for cervical herniation that could be beneficial to you. You can check it out here: “Cervical (Neck) Disc Herniation Help” th-cam.com/play/PLJVIPiFvv1mbqKvMOYeNyP0sqAZr9XocN.html
I have headaches on top of my skull also i wake up with both arms numb and as iam standing my middle back hurts and compresses my neck and head pain.ive had 4 mri done and 2 years of chiropracters but feel the same acupuncture and massage seems to help with valeriana oils
I have many of the symptoms described however my scalene doesn't feel tender or sensitive. My SCM on the left side of my neck however has several knots and crepitus. Does this sound like cervical radiculapthy?? Thanks for the video
Now a days, the surgeon usually chooses ACDF procedure for cervical radiculopathy. How long does a patient have to go through PT session? Assuming several months to find a relieve? And what happen if the patient stop going to PT? Will the problem with neck pain/stiffness starts again? Thanks

Brilliant!!! Could not agree more that Dr. David is GREAT!!! I came across your videos in an effort to find strengthening exercises for this condition. Without getting into detail, you mention things that only someone who has this condition would recognize....like the ribs being raised to compress nerves. I can feel that one of those ribs is raised. This is warp drive knowledge compared to answers I have gotten from surgeons. I know...I'm preaching to the choir!!!😂 I spoke with Amber at your clinic yesterday. I am an aging bodybuilder with a deep desire to restore myself to the way I was years ago before these problems. Ask Amber to see my picture I sent ....64 years old...a Jurassic bodybuilder.🦖!!!! Now at 69, I still look pretty much the same...but it's not as easy as it used to be. Thank you, Dr. David. You are the BEST!!! Happy Holidays to you and your staff!! Ive got a degenerative disk. My left upper shoulder has so much tension. I have a shooting pain that starts there, travels up along my neck, behind my ear, and i get a sharp pain in head. Like a migraine. I wonder if i have this.
Good evening, I just watched your video and been having pain below my shoulder; basically my biceps on both arms but on my left it is just the bicep and the hand. I have no neck or shoulder pain at all. My doctor told me to see a rheumatologist which I will see in a couple of months. I only have this problem when sleeping or leaning to the left on my sofa. I went to the urgent care center and the doctor said I have cervical radiculopathy and suggested physical therapy which I am doing now for the last two weeks but I don't see any inprovement at all. My question to you is seeing a rheumatologist the right way to go or should I see some other specialist instead. Thanks.
Hey Andre! We are so sorry to hear that you are dealing with what seems to be a complex cervical issue, which we can imagine is negatively affecting your quality of life. We can't say for certain if seeing a rheumatologist will provide you with the permanent solution you are looking for as we don't know the extent of your diagnosis but what we do know is that the following exercises, if applied well, have helped people in your position address the root problem that contributed to cervical radiculopathy, check them out here: "Top 6 At Home Treatments To Begin To Naturally Heal Cervical Radiculopathy" th-cam.com/video/0k4I1mCsWI0/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared Please keep us updated on your progress! 🙌
What if you have already have had 2 fusions. Nerve damage that's permanent. I have both..DDD and nerve damage. Is that stenosis? Once fusions start I was told I need more fusions ahead? I already have bulged discs. I'm so confused with what I have been left with...????
Hey there, another common problem that is similar to cervical radiculopathy is a peripheral nerve entrapment. This means the nerve may be getting pinched somewhere in the arm as well.
Stealing muscles? Is that correct please correct me what's the name of the muscles group? Thank you 😊
This is amazing content. I am suffering from this since Oct 1st. I wish I could come see you . Thank younfor what you are doing.
How are you?
Where are you my dear
Did it help
I’m thinking it wouldn’t
Is there a video that covers exercises that help with the muscle imbalances?
Thanks Doc! very informative and it's related conditions that I've been suffering right now.
I've had this for 25 years, every day is full of pain 😢
Now my condition has moved to occipital neuritis and degenerative disc disease in lower back
Thank you so much for your detailed explanations. After a time of pain I can finally understand this condition and see some hope for better days. Many greetings from Susanne
I have permanent loss of sensation in my neck from repeated barbell squats with barbell resting on my spine, and the referred pain in my shoulder blade is much better now
Great video, bit how do you strengthen these neck flexor muscles mentioned?
Hey Chuck! There are many ways to strengthen these muscles, but generally speaking we try to get people to perform a good chin tuck! We show this in a few of our videos. Here is a link to one of the videos that shows this exercise:

been dealing with this for a year and a half, my pcp said it was fibromylagia and even put me on meds for it, off them now, did physical therapy after getting an xray at a spine doctor, got a shot in the neck, its getting better little by little but i have tried everything. even since this started ive experienced tinnitus, everyone says it isnt linked but it has to be, im 37 and made it this long now all the sudden my hearing is going while my neck is injured,
Thank you so much for explaining where and why pain occurs.
Informative video. Thanks. I'm sure this is what's going on with me now
Thank you Doctor… I always appreciate your videos. You are consistently so thorough, and you talk in lay terms that we can all understand, a big shout out to you and your team for making these videos. God bless you, sir.❤
Hey Drew! We can't thank you enough for all your awesome feedback and kind words! You make our day here at the clinic! 🙏
Hi is it important to find out what is causing the CR or is the treatment the same in either case? Thx for your sharing the videos
Any tips on fixing those neck flexor muscles?
Been experiencing a lot of this and would love to be able to lay down at night 😎
This describes my issues with pain. Going to chiropractor/PT currently, has me on a 30 week care plan.
Hi Maureen. It's not common for a PT to recommend a 30-week care plan for cervical radiculopathy, as typical treatment durations range from 4 to 6 weeks. We don’t know the details of your situation so you may need it. However, given the extended timeframe, seeking a second opinion might provide clarity on your situation.

I never had pain my left hand froze while I was starting an IV in the ER OMG! a scary moment! Had an MRI
Thank you for this info!! Could pain in the collar bone it’s self be a symptom?
How do you strengthen those muscles and restore balance?
Great thanks

This is briefly explained in this video actually at the 6:10 mark, If you believe to be having a rotator cuff problem then it is suggested to check your arm motion:

Hi Juanita, You're welcome! We hope you feel some relief soon! 🧡
Have you found any exercises that made any improvements with your symptoms?
This is me to a T! Can’t wait for the next video on this!
More coming soon!!! Thank you for watching
Great video!
Thank you Ray! 🙌🏽
I should add, I’m 41 years old and pretty active. I work out with weights, bike and play sports.
@@sirigor82 has the strength in your bicep and shoulder returned? Was it getting exhausted more easily?
@@Wtizreal It partially returned, but far from 100% yet. And yes.
@@sirigor82 ahh what do the doctors day is their expectation it will return to 100 I have a similar issue but in my tricep
I think the key is to get the disc to stop compressing.the nerves. I was trying to see if their was a nerve glide. I'm staying away from Chiros lf they adjust something and make it worse
Best ever explanation!
So happy you found it helpful! 🙌
Truly you r the best.
Hey Frezer! Thank you so much for the kind words. We appreciate you!
Awesome explanation!!!
Thank you so much for watching! 😊
Wow, I have been treated for rotator cuff problem 5 years ago . Now I’m having neck issues and discovered bulging disks etc .

any recommendations for a similar practitioner as you in the Phoenix AZ area?
Thanks

Thank you for the vid but can i ask if is it a major problem to have the numbness in both hands or is it normal if you have a pinched nerve thanks!
Did u get an answer to this I have the same
Brilliant!!!
I know...I'm preaching to the choir!!!😂
I spoke with Amber at your clinic yesterday.
I wish you were in the Sacramento, CA area.

Hey Louise! You are very welcome - we hope the info on this video has been helping you!
Ive got a degenerative disk. My left upper shoulder has so much tension. I have a shooting pain that starts there, travels up along my neck, behind my ear, and i get a sharp pain in head. Like a migraine. I wonder if i have this.
ACDF is the ONLY relief for me snd very common
We can't say for certain if seeing a rheumatologist will provide you with the permanent solution you are looking for as we don't know the extent of your diagnosis but what we do know is that the following exercises, if applied well, have helped people in your position address the root problem that contributed to cervical radiculopathy, check them out here:

What specific neck muscles should be targeted to strengthen for better head support to combat Cervical Radiculopathy?
Hi Nick, Deep Neck Flexors, Sternocleidomastoid (SCM), Upper Trapezius, Scalene Muscles, and the Levator Scapulae.
What if you have already have had 2 fusions. Nerve damage that's permanent. I have both..DDD and nerve damage. Is that stenosis? Once fusions start I was told I need more fusions ahead? I already have bulged discs. I'm so confused with what I have been left with...????
I had carpnel tunnel surgery thinking it was that it wasn't it has to neck and spine surgery
Dr, I had this problem and drs did surgery last year.
But I’m still having numbness in the left index finger, what to do?
Hey there, another common problem that is similar to cervical radiculopathy is a peripheral nerve entrapment. This means the nerve may be getting pinched somewhere in the arm as well. You can try massaging around the elbow to see if you can help it that way. In case it is still cervical radiculopathy, here is a great playlist of videos that may be able to help:
