"La Callas" sang this on Dec 19, 1958 at L'Opera de Paris before the French social and political elite. That night was an absolute triumph for her. Even the then French President Rene Coty gave her a standing ovation! Thanks for posting this great video.

Just ran across this performance for the first time while looking for translations of Puccini arias. Amazing, passionate performance. How fortunate it was recorded. An aria sung 60 years ago still has the power to bring tears to my eyes . . .

Her hand choreography throughout the entire piece in itself is a piece of art. It is a small wonder that she can both sing and execute such subtle, intricate and varied hand movements and make it seem so effortless and natural. Also the variety of facial expressions is unparalleled. The voice is in perfect form here despite the lateness of this performance in her career. Maria was so hard working, she perfected her craft like no one else could or has since been able to. A fully dedicated, purposeful artist that placed the intentions of the great composers and faithfulness to their art above all else. Who today can claim the same amount of dedication, enthusiasm and truthful interpretation of the great Italian composers?
Lol ....its called PRACTICE. People think things just happen, but they do because of hours a day of practice. Even more practice to make it look natural! Some professional musicians practice six to eight hours a day.... art never just happens....
This woman really vissi d'arte, you feel even on this old video that air was so electrified in the presence of her genius and her PASSION for music, for her it was religion. Audience witnessed magic.
I don't know whom I love more: Callas, Price, Te Kanawa or Fleming...but I really FEEL the passion of Maria and Leontyne. I humbly state as a new, inexperienced opera fan that Callas seems to be the most heartfelt, and therefore the greatest...probably. La Divina indeed!
With respect, it is not always about technical perfection. It was the very "imperfections" of Callas' voide which made her so wonderful for so many. She touched the emotions in the most profound way. She could have terrible off days. But when "in form" as here in this emotional aria she moves to tears. For many, including myself she is one of the best regardless of the "experts" and critics.

Her best Tosca i my opinion! She looked like a tennis player with that bandana. :D Too bad no one sensed her desperate need to laugh and joke around. Maria, unknown to many, was a jokester. But her job was too serious to allow that side of hers to prosper. I hope you're laughing with the angels you for long have enchanted. RIP, la mama!
This may not be vocally the best performance, but this woman just tore out my heart, played with it in her hands and stuck it back in... and I am forever grateful that she did.
Maria might not have been blessed with the finest instrument but my goodness she had the passion for her art, can't listen to her without bringing a tear to my eyes, What a legacy she left us, I am forever grateful to her for this.

The huge vocal volume she had as a true, powerful soprano drammatico was exceedingly rare and so so precious. A first class instrument is not one that can barely produce a thin thread of a sound for critics to hail as “ beautiful “ and “ sweet “. A first class instrument is one that can make the whole building tremble across the vocal range. And that was Callas.

Wow. Callas never liked this aria, never liked singing it. But she put all that she had into it, each time. And the audience couldn't contain themselves after. With the Act not finished, they shouldn't have applauded after Vissi d'Arte......but they erupted anyway. :-)

this voice cannot be compared to any dramatic soprano because its simply perfect and unique....emotion, strong expressiveness and soul within three minutes....Kallas was very demanding of herself and a perfectionist...all the videos they are very instructive for young opera singers.....how should an opera voice be, how should the expressiveness and stage presence of a dramatic soprano be...?! but exactly like Callas and this is very difficult.....
This is near La Divina's top form especially for 1958. But have you heard the Callas before she lost all that weight? In 1953, Callas' high E flat rivals the young Sutherland of the 1960's. Callas sounds was GIGANTIC before the weight loss. That really effected her fantastic high notes. But Callas became a even better actress and looked stunning after the weight loss. I love Callas' 1960's Tosca's. That's my favorites of all Tosca's. Her voice was not prime than. But the performances riveting!
