    --From MrQbenDanny:
    VIVA LA CALLAS,
Having a heart to heart conversation with GOD. Lo mas grande en la historia.
    -From Robert Palmer:
It's a long ovation. But when I saw her perform Lucia in Chicago she received a 12 minute standing ovation at the half-way point in the mad scene. Set a record that had never been before or since duplicated. As I have said before here on youtube: to see Callas is to believe
    -From Robert Palmer:
Having seen Callas 13 times and Price only a few times I can tell you comparing Price to Callas is like comparing a flashlight to the Sun!
    -From Melvyn Elphee:
What amazes me is the subtlety and detail even in a live performance relatively early in her career. Nowadays it should be possible to rescue this from the clicks and enable MILLIONS to take advantage of this extraordinary piece of human expression instead of the 355 currently showing!
    -From deadwalke:
Can we just focus on her exemplary usage of her chest tones here from the last 4-5 minutes of the duet? Good lord they are some of the most Wagnerian-Baritonish notes I've ever heard from a female singer. And to think they really want to present Pretty Yende as the face of Opera now? God forbid we forget legendary Callas we'd be doing a disservice to all who call themselves an opera lover/buff.
    -From Kastrafior:
Mystère d'une voix interstellaire, magie d'une comédienne instinctive, hors norme et passionnément vivante... Mystère de l'opéra, magie d'une représentation sous l'auspice des dieux de l'horreur et du bonheur....

I've often thought that the story of Maria's life would be a great opera plot. I know movies have been made about her. And dramas. But we would always be thinking how would Maria be singing this. Or we would hear her voice and compare with whatever artist would have the courage to assume that role. Dear friends on this thread. Hearing Callas is nothing like having seen her. I can tell you. I have seen all the great artists from the late 1940s to many of the present. And no one comes close to comparing to her. For those reading this for the first time, I saw her thirteen times and those performances are branded into my memory above all others.

most Films center around her relationship with Onassis... who will dare to try to re-create the Masterpieces of performances in La Scala etc... who has the Knowledge? they will make a Gossip movie about her relationship with others... like the mean sister of Jacqueline du Pre did for Jacqueline...

+ Hildegerd Haugen have you seen that Atrocity? I believe more than anything in Negative Energy theories... when you have your own sister HATING YOU like that, it is no wonder you get Multiple Sclerosis so young and die a few years later... and to be so Vulgar as to actually make a movie about it... I had gone so SAD when I saw that movie... so unbelievably sad for Jacqueline and not because of the MS but because of the HATRED her sister had for her

Well, this is like THE way to sing this. I haven't heard anyone who could put so many colours in their voice like Callas. This is just insane how good of an actress she can be and we don't even see her, we only hear and we can hear her cry, we can listen deeply into her soul. There's a piano that sounds like a knife really near your chest, another one like a soft, desperate cry. She was just a Goddess of Opera and no one can come even close.

This version of " Vissi d'arte" is breathtaking! I've.not heard anyone phrase this aria as Callas did in this performance. She makes total sense with the text with careful musical nuance. Thus, a revelation.

Vissi d'arte, vissi d'amore. An aria perfect for Maria Callas. I've always thought that somehow, one way or another, Tosca was a slight allusion to the life of Callas. She lived for art, she lived for love. And sometimes her love for opera was so intense that people mistook her for a tigress and a diva ordering people around as she wished. But she was nothing but a pristine soul that devoted her whole life for opera, for art. Even if it meant damaging her image. She was perhaps, the most misunderstood artist in history. She gave the future generations masterpieces of art, her gift of love for us, her contribution of hope to this world slowly plunging into darkness and hate. Requiescat in pacem wherever you are, La Divina.

Her Tosca is the portrayal of a woman being ruthlessly pushed closer and closer to her breaking point... and finally, over it. You have a woman whose single worry may be Mario's possible infidelity... a singer adored by the public, by all accounts... and within less than a day, she has to question her beliefs and do things she never would have thought herself capable of, undergo incredible psychological torture and eventually lose everything. And Callas brings this home like no-one else.

    Ihrer Stimme .
    Man merkt :
Sie hat für Ihre Kunst gelebt und hat sich für diese Musik aufgeopfert .

Was die Callas mit Ihrer Stimme gemacht hat, DASS KANN NIEMAND .

Even today, to ask a singer to sing Brünhilde one week, then Elvira in Puritani the next... I don't care how young you are or how youthful you have kept your voice, that's just not something technique can give you or any teacher can teach you. It's a monster. A sacred monster. A perfect storm of talent, ambition and something superhuman. And hard hard work. As soon as she stopped working, IT stopped working. Imagine had she not met that troll... But as my voice teacher said, she was the kind of person who, if not to Onassis, would have been drawn to someone else treating her just as horribly.

That is true! Olivero said Act 2 is the one that will break you. Everything is rosy up until Act 2. If you start the long interrogation scene with Scarpia to the climax "Ah piu non posso! Ah! Che orror! Ah Cessate il martir! e troppo suffrir" and the voice is too open, diaster. Behrens tried to sing Tosca, and many other roles, to horrific effect. I saw Mattila at the Met maybe 9 years ago and it was... not Tosca. Totally out of her instrument. And Carmen... how many monsters have we witnessed blast to shit this "easy" opera?

A terrible loss. Especially where Maria Callas is concerned. Watching her is nearly as breathtaking as her incomparable talent. What she lacked in perfection (according to some critics) she made up with passion, dedication and an art that gone forever.

those critics are Imbeciles worshiping this or the other Imbecile singer whom with their little minds think approached perfection... Early Callas was an unrepeatable phenomenon... Well the scary thing is that I truly believe in Gauss' Curve regarding all natural phenomena, that means that in ANY given moment, in the Billions of people who live exist extremely rare natural phenomena in ALL possible categories, perhaps not someone as rare as Callas or Sutherland because their spectrum spans that of Centuries but at least ... where are they? with all the Imbeciles who make careers today, they dont even bother? stay at home??? SCARY! idea (same applies to pop artists and actors... where is today's Ella, Nina, Sarah, Judy, Barbra? are they type-writers and hairdressers and replaced by all these Porn Stars who flash us with their butts all the time? I'm somewhat late in replying to your question. I was a great opera lover since about 9 years old. At 15 when still in high school I was fortunate through a personal connection to usher at the Civic Opera House in Chicago. Lyric's first season was only 3 weeks but Carol Fox imported the entire La Scala company - sets, costumes, productions, conductors and singers including Maria making her American debut as Norma in 1954. I got her autograph backstage and met Serafin and so many other great artists. I'm almost 79 now and still remember those great days. The following season she returned and I am one of the few people still alive who saw the three performances of Butterfly she gave. Also saw her at the Met in Lucia, in a return charity concert with orchestra in Chicago and the farewell tour in Los Angeles. As someone here on youtube said, "an artist like Callas comes along once." So true.

Maria both revitalised and, in many ways, turned the entire world of opera into a circus of sound-alikes. She fought for standards which she alone could set and meet. But, from us, this is a defeatist attitude. What she gave us cannot be exceeded but can be faced, head on, and every note, even when that note is a lesson to learn from and not what she would have really wanted to produce, is humbling for us. Of course there can never be another Maria. Her legacy must make us want anther genius who will lead us into another space. Meanwhile, we have her.

How right you are Maestro. But, truly, who could compare to your own magnificent renditions of the repertoire? Povera Maria. She never had dinner with you. And, fortified by those incredible meals that you cook, just think what La Divina might have achieved. (See if you can guess who this is!)

She had said once that the reason she was so good as Tosca is because she never really liked the opera so she had to put double effort into making the role (now that's a reason to be absolutely phenomenal in something... not to actually like it...)

    • @wpdremak6896

from her master classes, she explained that she felt the aria was too early and should be AFTER she kills Scarpia. As an actress, she felt that it held up the tension line, but was a way for us to forgive her(Tosca) for committing murder.
