This is the Jedi Order that we needed in the sequels along with a Republic that was capable if not more than the Old Republic, A order that learned from the mistakes of the Previous Order and founds ways to not fall into old habits.
its such a shame because imagine a world where kylo purged MOST of the academy except for say 7 or so of the students who scattered in groups of 2-3-1-1. make it so the Knights of ren had like 10 or so lightsaber wielding members led by kylo varying in power from padawan to jedi master and kylo being like grandmaster/mace windu level. them being spread out and hunted even in those numbers is deadly since kylo knows them all intimately. lor san tekka was a jedi knight but more of an archivist for luke that's why kylo kills him first getting info to help track the others which he potentially had the info pulled from his mind showing kylo dominate a character we would later learn was a friend in the academy. Like a story about reuniting the lost jedi order and giving hope to the galaxy. with luke who could still feel like he failed kylo and cry for a bit although I would prefer he was single handedly guarding every jedi and sith artifact from kylo and his forces and snoke, by both concealing their presence constantly in the force and when he can reaching out his to his students from across the galaxy. Then when they get luke say at the end of movie 1 or beginning of 2 he joins them and the constant veil lifts which is like a fog and then we get to see GM Luke actually fight. The subversion was that people thought he abandoned them but was instead with them and the force the entire time Like so many cool ways to bring even a new original character like finn into the story with a jedi academy involved and they can it to build NOTHING
They could have done a second jedi Civil War. With Luke olf AF. And it would make sense. A Jedi Grand Master, with absolutely 0 idea of what the Jedi oder was fully like. Some people are bound to disagree with him.
It was a leaner, meaner Jedi Order that was forged out of trial and error in a time of war, less dogmatic and more pragmatic. Less stuck in its ways and more flexible and willing to experiment. And most important of all: it didn't view human connection as something to be shunned.
Kyp Duron, Corran Horn, Mara Jade Skywalker, Jacen Solo, Jaina Solo, Kyle Katarn, Kam Solusar, not to mention Luke himself. Yeah, the Order was pretty stacked. I still believe the Order after Jacen's betrayal and the later conflicts it faced was still more powerful than any other Jedi Order that came before with the exception of maybe the Fall of the Republic era Jedi (1,000 BBY-19 BBY).
Luke definitely improved on what came before. The NJO had far more flexibility and adaptability than the old Jedi Order, which also took a lot of pressure off of the Jedi initiates since they didn't have to choose to sacrifice their lives outside of being a Jedi to become one.
Some of them could even be generals at the same time! (Partly because a lot of the NJO authors straight up forgot poor Farlander was a Jedi to begin with. Agamar gets no respect.)
@@justinamey7116 That's more "The need to cram as many stories as possible into Luke's, or even more restrictively, Han's lifespan" got them so many darksiders and a Sith in their midst. Also Lucas reading a summary of Vergere's stuff and Luke using lightning in the final Vong book and saying to cut that shit out.
@@justinamey7116 There were significant improvements as for starters the Order wasn't wiped out by a Sith in their midst like the old Jedi order was, the flexibility allowed for the NJO to adapt and change as needed with the political climate of the New Republic and later Galactic Alliance without becoming complete pariahs like the old Jedi did. That the NJO also believed in redemption meant many of those that fell to the Dark Side returned, rather than becoming long term threats and splinter orders like the Sith, which were a direct result of the Old Jedi Order's rigidity and their general belief that once a Jedi went dark, they were a lost cause.
Yes. They use both. But some master like Luke Skywalker, Kyle Katarn, Kyp Durron, Cilghal...they are such strong in the force that they rarely use them.
@@robertocaetano4945 Eh, Kyle Katarn always kept his blaster. While I rarely pulled out the Bryar Pistol in Jedi Outcast once I got my lightsaber, there were a few moments where enemies were a little too far away and the ranged weapon worked wonderfully.
Jedi being strapped is arguably cooler than all of them having lightsabers. Here you got this dude who can shoot lightning out of his hand but nah he'd rather just blow enemies away with an E-11
I loved Luke's era from the jedi academy game, Disney should have never retconed all that rich lore, they should have just followed the books and games and then make a few major and minor changes but overall stay true to the EU.
@A dudes thoughts In some ways, the EU was. For example, Disney copied the major plot point of a nephew of Luke's becoming a Sith Lord. Kylo Ren is just an inferior interpretation of Darth Caedus.
The way Luke designed his order is pretty much the perfect idea only problem being it’s still starwars so stuff happens. But in essence Luke really did improve the jedi and protected it from old jedi mistakes before they even occurred.
@@CyrusCageSCWS The former Jedi Order was more like the Night's Watch where its members practiced celibacy as a means of keeping them loyal to the order and not have conflicting loyalties to those outside. Case in point, Anakin's love for Padme doomed them and the Republic.
I think a lot of people don't give the old Jedi order enough leeway as to HOW it became so rigid and stagnant. It's not like they woke up one day and decided to make their members emotionless and celibate. There was essentially a long line of fallen Jedi that succumbed to the dark side because they had what were at first, sympathetic reasons (e.g. love) for abandoning the cause. The solution over thousands of years of Jedi falling is a more rigid system unfortunately. It's incredibly cruel to subject someone to indoctrination to bury and let go of their emotions from a young age. But when you live in a universe where even ONE fallen Jedi can cause millions of deaths and destabilization of the Galaxy, it's kind of their responsibility to keep a leash on their members.
One thing I really love about Legends is indeed Luke's new Jedi Order. Not only is it loaded with interesting characters like Corran Horn, Tionne, Tahiri Veila, Kyp Durron etc., but the fact that they are allowed to have families and lives outside of the Jedi Order makes them so much more relatable. With Corran in the NJO it even seems to have helped him as a Jedi to have a wife and kids to care about. He isn't the hot headed fly boy of the X-wing books anymore. Being a family man apparently has made him more responsible and thus a better Jedi.
@@V2011FI mean wether or not there was an agenda is completely subjective I personally don’t think there was one but its fine if you disagree. I do agree that we should’ve seen Lukes order though and that the sequels couldve been better written
I would join Luke's Legends Jedi Order in a instant. He knows that emotions and attachments shouldn't be feared or shunned. With the proper training they can be part of everyday life for a jedi. This to me was the biggest flaw of the Old Republic Order. Making Jedi cut themselves off from family and friends just seemed foolish and cold.
Agreed. As soon as that was revealed I knew the Jedi would fall. It's not natural to have people shun attachments. It makes them emotionally weak. That's why Kanan Jarrus from Rebels is seen as the better Jedi in Disney cannon. His attachments made him more in tune with the force and willing to sacrifice for the greater good. Yoda and the old Jedi council were more interested in saving themselves
I like how Vergere gets so ruffled when she finds out Luke's order allows attachments. Luke says it makes the Jedi more of a whole person and Vergere just gets angry and says it makes them less than Jedi, showing the usual inability of the old Jedi order had to actually deal with a persons passions,
The Old Jedi Order didn’t discourage feelings and certain attachments. The bond between Master and Student is a sacred one and the Jedi had friends, they were just taught to not act emotionally, especially when their master or friend was killed.
One unspoken factor is that Luke setup the Jedi Temple on Yavin 4 - in a way it enabled Luke to keep the Order relatively independant from the politics of galactic government and enabled the Jedi to develop in a relatively less claustrophobic environment
Legends Luke: “I shall rebuild the Jedi order and make it more powerful than the old one. Also Jedi can carry blasters and get married.” Disney canon Luke: “ I’m sad and the Jedi should die. *drinks blue milk* “
He later allowed jedi to study Dark side of the force. Also he allowed to manipulate or to threaten, if nessesary, turning Jedi into something close to old je'daii order
imagine if they hadn’t flushed Luke’s New Jedi Order and the New Republic down the toilet, imagine a Harry Potter’s HOGWARTS BUT IN SPACE Jedi Academy film series with an epic war between the New Republic and the Empire as the backdrop
I would like less Harry Potter, tbh. It was fun as a kid but I'm tired of it all, considering (gestures vaguely at real life shit related to Harry Potter)
@@arx3516 understanding does not equal calm under fire, and every soldier dead is still a life cut short. There's a reason we don't use child soldiers.
I really likes the fact that Luke didn't discourage the Jedi from having feelings, I always felt he encouraged his order to have feeling and use them, but to temper them with patience
I know it’s two years, but The Old Jedi Order didn’t discourage Jedi from having feelings they taught not to act on them. For example: Don’t go on an emotional quest for revenge if a friend or your master is killed it won’t bring them back.
Luke did things right, correcting and learning from the past, both the good and bad. Hell, letting Jedi fall in love and marry was important cause if Jolee's advice to Revan about love, that "love will itself will save you, not condemn you", got to Anakin it might have kept him from bottling things up and it all leading to his fall.
Facts. That was always my biggest gripe with the old Jedi. They were so paranoid of the Dark Side that they stunted the emotional growth of their members, which became a self-fulfilling prophecy.
@@gibbs615we saw that in ESB. Yoda would let his friends die to serve his bigger plan. And that would've failed. If Luke didn't care for his father, Vader never would have turned and killed Palpatine. Luke would've died
I would love to see luke debate a prequel era jedi on how to properly teach someone about the force. It would make for an interesting battle of ideals.
The way they wrote his post rotj order is why alot of people prefer that era over everything. It's exciting to see what they choose to do in canon moving forward.
@@allowableman2 exactly its like the solution isn't to steal the luke story and have rey the mary sue do it. at that point just say screw canon and do it with luke
@@randalthekidd7006 I feel like Rey could have been a great character in the old continuity if she were used in a Jaden Korr (From the Jedi Academy game) type of way.
Luke's new Jedi order in the legends EU timeline was so much better than the old Jedi order in canon was for sure. I know Qui-Gon Jinn definitely would've liked it and been so proud of it too. This is what we should've gotten for the sequel trilogy!
I agree as they learn from most of the mistakes made by the old Jedi order as those mistakes lead to Anakin's slow descent to the dark side, and that i find the original EU in post endor era to be better sequels than the third trilogy from what i found out on those two films after the Force awakens, considering the i have read the few books i have got with the legends brand and its a lot more better written than those from Disney has done.
If you can find it online, look up the short story “Firestorm.” It’s about how Luke came across Tionne from his first class (especially how she goes from enthusiasm to disappointment when she first meets him.)
@@michaelandreipalon359 then you are better than Disney, since they don't pay many of these authors for their work (cough cough, Alan Dean Foster, Michael Stackpole, James Kahn, Walter Jon Williams, cough). And since they don't reprint these short storys, it's fair game.
6:36 oh that's only the half of it. One of my favorite aspects of Luke's Jedi academy is that Luke taught his students to embrace both the light side and the dark side. Unlike the original Jedi who saw anything dark side as being inherently bad, Luke realized that the dark side is a part of oneself and it's also part of the force in general. So he encouraged his students to embrace both sides of the force and create a balance. In other words, the Jedi of his academy could use dark side abilities, so long as they kept their moral composure and used the force to do the right thing. They were taught not to fear the dark side but to also be mindful and maintain that balance.
Legends Luke: I will avoid the old Jedi's mistakes and let the youngling's families to live with their kids and get employees on my Jedi Academy. Also, I will allow marriage between Jedis and I'm gonna be one of the first on getting a family. Canon Luke: YoU mAy ChOoSe OnLy OnE.
Legends keeps Luke both flawed and heroic, ultimately becoming everything Anakin hoped to be before becoming Vader. THIS is why Legends understands Luke better than Disney does.
I have a copy of the Jedi Path, the Padawan’s Handbook with written footnotes and captions from people who owned the copy in the Star Wars universe. Some of which are from Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, Anakin, Ahsoka and then to Luke. Some of Luke’s comments on some of the articles and teachings in the handbook says he doesn’t agree with quite a few of them and would make changes to his teachings that would allow more flexibility for the students to grow and that’s amazing.
THose books are great, the Bounty Hunter one tries to make a compromise between TCW Mandalore, and the Mandalore of Blackman, Traviss, and the old David Michelinie/Gene Day Marvel comics. Saying only one continent got glassed (Blatantly untrue if you look at the orbital shots, but more fun for storytelling)
Can you imagine flying class? Having to Sim against Corran Horn and Keyan Farlander the X-Wing game protagonist (When the authors remember he is actually a Jedi too) And sometimes Grandmaster Luke comes down to scrub stomp everyone, or invites Wedge and Tycho down with a Ysalamiri equipped pod.
all of this is so awesome, i can’t believe this was removed from canon and got an old grumpy luke who just gave up on the jedi after the fall of his jedi academy
I thought the major (canon) reason Luke didn't continue the strictures of the old Jedi was because they were no longer relevant. He had only a few dozen Jedi all of whom he had personal relationships with. They were not ambassadors or generals representing a government, so there were no bans on skills like force lightning. Luke could trust them not to abuse such powers. Seems some problems did crop up in the later books with young Jedi going down some dark paths. Of course, he had sketchy knowledge of the era and he may not have known about some of the old traditions.
@Chosen One Which makes no sense, because he realized by the time of ROTJ that the Old Jedi Order was flawed, and had failed Anakin, partly leading to his fall. Obi-Wan and Yoda had both given up on Vader and wanted him dead. Only Luke believed that Anakin could be brought back
While Luke's Legends Jedi Order had it's share of hiccups, such as having a fair share of students fall to the Dark Side, it was definitely an improvement over the Prequel era Jedi. They were more flexible with the code, which is good since what works for one person might not work for another. I also loved the idea of Luke using the Yavin 4 temples as his academy. Made things feel like they had come full circle. Even if he had to excorcise a Sith ghost... Speaking of which, have you covered the Old Republic era? More specifically the Tales of the Jedi comics?
I know this is completely unrelated to the video, but another series you could cover besides Star Wars is the Gears of War series, including the games (the first three, four and five are kinda bad in their storytelling.) It’s very gritty, dark, and amazing, including the books and comics. Love to see that from you Eck, and great video as always!
Yet another reason why Legends is far superior to most of what Disney is putting out. So many amazing stories about Luke, the Jedi, and non-Force users across the galaxy.

To me, Luke's biggest thing was how he viewed emotions. He knew they were important, need even. However they shouldn't control your actions. That was the line as I viewed it
It's a Vast improvement because he treats his students like People instead of robots. The Old Jedi order was often very abusive to their members out of a fear of the "scarier" and more difficult parts of being alive. Ironic, considering their supposed stance on fear.
Indeed. That's the why the Sith eventually wiped out the old order. The jedi stuck to their out of touch and flawed teachings instead of adapting and growing
I really like Luke’s Order. Encouraging Jedi to pursue their own dreams, but with the teaching and training to better understand their abilities. Like a Space X-men, but less spandex.
I really like how Lukes new Jedi order learned from the mistakes of the old republic era Jedi and improved upon their teachings. Even though he kinda had to figure things out on his own, his New Jedi Order is my favorite iteration of the Jedi, and after the Vong War they were stacked with powerful capable jedi it was awesome. I loved the new jedi order series as well, it’s such a shame what happened to the order and Jacen after that with legacy of the force and swarms war
Oh look, the NJO which survived multiple crisis, wars, and government-backed repression to preserve the galaxy against the Sith. ...Why were they destroyed in Canon again? 🤨
The Canon Jedi Academy banned relationships and focused on child indoctrination and dogmatic teachings similar to the prequels, rather than enlightening and freer teachings of the Legends' Jedi Academy.
@@rafaelfarias4359 I don't think we know the status of relationships in the Canon NJO, but "child indoctrination" is something every Jedi Order has done, and is frankly necessary for any Order of super-powered individuals in fiction. The Legends Jedi order was great. From the lead up in all of the various novels through the NJO series, I enjoyed myself. Of course there were a few duds in there, but overall it was pretty good. Also I'm stoked to see footage from Jedi Academy & Outcast in the video. I had both of them on pc back in hs when they were new and just scooped Academy for the original Xbox last weekend. Was just playing through some of the levels shown here earlier this week.
I found his Legends academy and feel a lot better and more realistic than the prequel order. I think his order was a lot better and the prequels order was supposed to show a decaying order than lost it's way they feared the dark side and falling to it which I suppose was the point of the whole non attachment thing. But yes his order was great and a shame we never saw it on screen and got the rubbish we got after 2015.
Before the prequels I thought jedi were less centralised and more monk like, too - I imagined them like village shaman, or lone wandering characters almost like the witcher
Thats why Luke is the Hope. He would rebuild the Jedi but not with the same mistakes. After Yoda defeat and retreat he knew the old Jedi way was doomed. Luke showing mercy and refusing to kill his father teach Yoda and Obi Wan a lesson. The prophecy about Cade Skywalker told that with Luke Skywalker, the Jedi trully return.
I 100% agree! Luke's jedi order was so much better than the old republic era jedi order. allowing love and marriage is the biggest point for me. but your thought about Luke being more Lese Fair than the old jedi really appeals to me as well.
I can see Kathleen's Office with a poster of Grand Master Luke, but placed Rey Skywalker's Face slap on it, or a Lucasfilm's Desk but with a Cross over the face.
Luke’s allowance of marriage and childbearing was a _SIGNIFICANT_ shift for the betterment of the Jedi Order. For one, Anakin would have been accepted and encouraged to love Padmé
i like this Luke "Grandmaster by Circumstances" like he's learning alongside his students, while also being immensely powerful. Searching old Jedi Temples for Knowledge. More likely to follow the will of the Force instead of a code. In my Head canon there is a Mission with Luke and some knights and "Younglings" at a temple on typhon looking for old artefacts
I don’t remember much of Jedi Academy trilogy, since I read them years ago, but I remember them being really solid. The Luke parts being the best of course
This was the era of Star Wars I lived in during my formative teen years, and it's still how I prefer to imagine the Jedi as an institution. It took me a long time to accept the prequels into my head canon. Well, in truth I never fully did, but I accepted that I could keep enjoying Star Wars despite not liking every part of the franchise (because it was all just made up anyway). Honestly, an important point of growth for me!
I haven't gotten there yet. I still struggle to regain the love of Star Wars I had before Phantom Menace came out. I was a kid, coming out of the theaters, trying to convince myself I loved the film, like people back in the 70s coming out of the Chinese Theater did, and I couldn't convince myself I wasn't disappointed. I hated the prequels. Then the sequels came out and I learned what hatred really was. The prequels merely disappointed me. The sequels INFURIATE me.
@@jilliankratish4651 I've come to accept the best Star Wars will always be the one in your head. On the plus side, there's just SO MUCH Star Wars now that for every bad movie, there seems to be a great video game, tv show, or comic! Maybe Eck's prediction will come true and we'll get more unabridged Legends audiobooks, or even a continuation of that timeline (unlikely, but who knows after Star Wars Visions). So yeah, the movie canon is a mess, but I keep finding good SW out there! And canon is overrated, anyway.
Would be cool to see more of Luke’s New Jedi order in a series, and possibly adapt elements from legends that could work for the Canon story. Could even be centered around a journey with Luke Skywalker searching for Jedi/force sensitives across the galaxy.
Based on Battlefront 2’s campaign, that’s kinda what he did. We know he traveled around looking for old Jedi artifacts and writings so he’d be prepared for teaching a new generation. It wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to assume that he also came across other Force Sensitives and passed on some pointers from his own journey.

Luke's Academy and its style of teaching makes sense for a lone Jedi master without support of any kind trying to rebuild his order (or at least what he thought the Order was. Luke was a child of the new era too).
Luke's NJO was imo the ultimate vindication of qui-gon jinn's views of the force and all his efforts. A jedi order that followed the will of the force and not some rigid code.
Nah, maybe Luke had a simmilar understanding of the force, that's it, aside from liberal viewes on the order, they had nothing more in common, Qui Gon Jins Jedi would be pacifist monks that help the common folk, not heroes of the galaxy.
YES!! I'm literally playing through Jedi Academy and reading the young Jedi series right now. Its a way better and more empowering story than the Disney trash.
You know, I was just thinking that if one of the temples on Yavin IV is the one where Exar Kun was buried, and he’s stated to be the inventor of the Force Harvester, then that thing Luke learned from the holocron here that there were other devices made that could drain and store Force energy would suggest that this was where the Harvester was likely made, to be later used in the Great Sith War. (That seems like kinda an obvious fact, but it’s one I only just put together just now.)
I also like how Luke took a know thy enemy approach to the Dark Side: He hand picked Knights to study the dark under the careful eye of a master or himself.
I always liked the idea of Jedi serving as doctors, lawyers, and even as politicians. In cannon, weaker Jedi who failed the trials had few options for service beyond chamber maids, librarians, and janitors.
Stuff like this is kind of why I love the pre prequel not fitting as much, it creates interesting contrasts. Luke's Jedi Order being nothing like the old one because writers didn't know what the prequels would be like makes them more interesting to read about, same with Boba Fett's old backstory.
I feel Luke’s Jedi also need a new Code, as the old Jedi Code doesn’t align with his philosophy. Luke's Jedi embrace attachments, emotion, and passion, allowing for open romance and marriage. They operate with a more nuanced, adaptable, balanced, supportive, understanding, insightful, empathetic, and healthy approach to emotions and The Force. Unlike the old Order, which maintained a rigid philosophy that suppressed or avoided natural emotions. As Luke's Order recognize that these aspects of life can be channelled constructively and actually helps Jedi to understand and control their emotions, rather than suppressing them, it strengthens their connection to the Force. My version of Luke’s Code is: In emotion, there is understanding. In knowledge, there is wisdom. In passion, there is purpose. In chaos, there is harmony. In everything, there is the Force. I feel that this Code reflects Luke’s more holistic approach to the Force. Unlike the old Order, which futilely shunned emotions and attachments, Luke’s Order allows for and embraces these elements as integral to their growth and effectiveness. They actively seek to understand the Dark Side, not to fear it, to avoid the ignorance and arrogance that led to the downfall of the old Jedi Order.
@Vilgax00 It fits better than the old Jedi code. But I still feel the one I came up with aligns better with Luke's philosophies. In emotion, there is understanding. This emphasizes that emotions are not to be suppressed, but understood and managed constructively with support. Luke's more empathetic Jedi embrace their feelings in a healthy way and use them to connect more deeply with The Force and others. Which in turn brings Peace. In knowledge, there is wisdom. This acknowledges that acquiring knowledge is important, but understanding and applying it with wisdom and compassion leads to greater insight and resistance to Dark Side temptations through study of it, which prevents the ignorance of the old Jedi, whose refusal of it entirely left them vulnerable to attack from Sith. In passion, there is purpose. This reflects that passion and attachment can drive purpose and positive action when focused on meaningful goals, bringing serenity through direction and fulfilment. Luke's more nuanced Jedi can use their passions to commit to protecting their loved ones, balancing their lives, finding inner peace and produce stronger Jedi. In chaos, there is harmony. This recognizes that while chaos exists, Jedi should work towards creating harmony within it through understanding, adaptability, and inner peace. Emphasizing the importance of maintaining balance amidst disorder, rather than enforcing order. In everything, there is the Force. This emphasizes The Force's all-encompassing presence in everything in existence, including life and death. Viewing the Force as the underlying essence of all things, reflecting the New Jedi Orders holistic philosophy under Luke.
Disney should just release 90 minute films in the 2003 clone wars animation and title them “Star Wars Legends movies” It’s a win-win. Disney makes more money and they appease both fandoms.
Man this makes me sad considering how well written Luke and the new jedi order was with allowed emotions and attachments etc vs the shitty order thst didn't even produce 1 actual jedi knight in the movies Literally the CHAD EU order vs the Virgin movie order
And that basically none of them (including the masters) actually follow their (pretty much) only rule, which was to ""keep their emotions on Neutral/non existent"" (if that even makes sense)
That makes me wonder how the Jedi of the Old Republic would've reacted to Luke's Newer, more transparent Jedi Order. Would they be appalled by the changes? Or perhaps would welcome the changes with open arms? I can see Plo Koon accepting it without hesitation, while Mace Windu would be skeptical at the very least, given his dogmatic outlook.
Fleet battle between Grand admiral Thrawn vs. Ender Wiggin Each one has an equal sized fleet with equally capable subordinates, and since Ender is from a different universe each has equal understanding of the technology they’re using. Gonna say, He's probably not going to do this one because from just what you can gather watching his podcasts and stuff he's prooooobably not a big Orson Scott Card fan.
I really liked this one. Luke is pretty awesome. Well until someone is given creative control of his character who probably shouldn't be. Mistakes happen on an intellectual property especially one as old and varied as Star Wars.
The other huge advantage of allowing Jedi to have relationships is that their kids will most likely be _powerful in the Force._ The Old Jedi Order rules actually bred out Force sensitivity and make it a negative genetic trait - you join the Order and you're _removed from the gene pool._ Then the only way new potential Jedi get born is by recessive genes of those too weak in the Force to be Jedi themselves hooking up. As well parents who have their Force sensitive child kidnapped by the Order would be reluctant to have more children that would in all likelihood also be taken. And thus Force sensitivity is from a Darwinian perspective similar to a fatal genetic mutation - you have it in high enough concentration to be snatched up and you're a dead end. Meanwhile in Luke's academy Jedi are probably bonking each other, which means that Force sensitivity is reinforced in following generations [could a seperate linage of Super Force sensitivities be the eventual result after enough generations? A subrace(s) of Jedi]. And as well having children that you are proud of and turn out superhuman would encourage Jedi to have even more kids - the only risk is in the Star Wars universe childbirth is risky because OB/GYN is so incompetent that a mother can die in childbirth due to her emotions. Try claiming _that_ as a defence in a malpractice suit.
The only issue with this take is the Force itself. It's only a semi-genetic trait. The Force has a will of its own, and can decide when someone is born with or without Force sensitivity. Sure, usually when someone who is Force sensitive has a child, that child is Force sensitive. But there are plenty of examples in both legends and canon where a non-Force sensitive is born to Force sensitive parents. Or when Force sensitives are born to non-Force sensitive parents. Heck, it's even happened to entire peoples. The whole Rakatan Infinite Empire used to be Force sensitive, and then suddenly Force sensitive Rakatans stopped being born altogether. By the time of KotOR, we don't know of a single living Force sensitive Rakatan left in the galaxy, iirc. Basically, as long as life exists in the galaxy, people will be born Force sensitive, whether or not their parents were.
"The other huge advantage of allowing Jedi to have relationships is that their kids will most likely be powerful in the Force." The force can pull itself back from a bloodline, but also that's brought up as a negative by Vergere. She points out that Ben Skywalker represents a Jedi *DYNASTY* which is certain to unnerve politicians the galaxy over. Parallels to the issue of priests leaving church land to their kids etc.
That was part of the reasoning behind Luke’s allowances. But there were drawbacks with successive generations. Plagueis mentioned something about it in his hand written notes in ‘Book of Sith’. Physical anomalies or disabilities or mental instability or something… The other issues are; 1 - the Midi-chlorians are organelle within the people of a GFFA, like our mitochondria, so the genetics of it work a bit different than say guessing whether the baby will have blue or brown eyes with a pea chart. 2 - the Midi-chlorians and more importantly, the Force has a will of it’s own. Which is something that Plagueis was struggling to tame. It works in theory, but not without issue in practice. The Skywalkers and some races like the Sith or the Rakata were anomalies.
During the Dark Nest Trilogy, Luke's Jedi Order definitely became more structured. At that time the order had risen to about a thousand members. I remember when Luke used the Force to summon all Jedi back to the temple to hold a meeting. He basically told everyone "get your shit together and dedicate yourself to being a Jedi or get the hell out of my order". lol 🤣
(2:06) As well as that there were in general, not a lot of force sensitives to recruit from. (6:41) How can someone both defend the old Jedi Order has doing things the right way yet then say that letting Jedi form attachments (what Luke did) works? Is this a change of mind?
Luke drew upon many influences for his Praxeum, many of which were offshoots of the Jedi which would not have been accepted by the previous Jedi. This included the Jenserai, droid Jedi orders, the few surviving knights who fell off the radar, Jedi with deeply buried powers like Kyle Katarn and other Force-related beings. The children of previous Jedi would normally be treated as a problem by Jedi -since Luke himself was one- but were now accepted. Luke was free of dogma and his Jedi themselves evolved beyond the prequel era Jedi. The ability to be people with Jedi powers rather than Jedi who have some skills was a key transformation in the thinking of a Jedi. The portrayal of Kanan Jarus and Ezra Bridger were like these Jedi rather than prequel Jedi.
I like the canon version better...He's not perfect and he failed. The legends version make him look like a Duke Nukem, and the New Republic even worse. The were portrayed like action figures on a Saturday morning commercial. The canon version depicting his failure is one of the turning points that made Luke Skywalker a believeable character as the last surviving Jedi.

its such a shame because imagine a world where kylo purged MOST of the academy except for say 7 or so of the students who scattered in groups of 2-3-1-1. make it so the Knights of ren had like 10 or so lightsaber wielding members led by kylo varying in power from padawan to jedi master and kylo being like grandmaster/mace windu level. them being spread out and hunted even in those numbers is deadly since kylo knows them all intimately. lor san tekka was a jedi knight but more of an archivist for luke that's why kylo kills him first getting info to help track the others which he potentially had the info pulled from his mind showing kylo dominate a character we would later learn was a friend in the academy.
The subversion was that people thought he abandoned them but was instead with them and the force the entire time
Like so many cool ways to bring even a new original character like finn into the story with a jedi academy involved and they can it to build NOTHING
It’d be funny to see kylo trying to destroy Luke’s NJO only to get one shot by Jaden Korr.

It was a leaner, meaner Jedi Order that was forged out of trial and error in a time of war, less dogmatic and more pragmatic. Less stuck in its ways and more flexible and willing to experiment. And most important of all: it didn't view human connection as something to be shunned.
Bingo
Luke's NJO right after the Vong war is unbeatable. Loaded with top Jedi.
Kyp Duron, Corran Horn, Mara Jade Skywalker, Jacen Solo, Jaina Solo, Kyle Katarn, Kam Solusar, not to mention Luke himself. Yeah, the Order was pretty stacked.
And let's not forget that the NJO totally abandoned the old "no blasters" rule. They finally understood the advantages of ranged weapons.
I know right? With their Force abilities, they could be good enough with blasters to shoot other blaster shots out of the air! They’d be unstoppable

Being a family man apparently has made him more responsible and thus a better Jedi.

that was Lucas' plan. the scope and scale of the prequels combined with the characters of the original trilogy. it would've been awesome
Yeah that's all very true and it's why Anakin was manipulated by Palpatine so easily.
Also Jedi can carry blasters and get married.”
Disney canon Luke: “ I’m sad and the Jedi should die. *drinks blue milk* “
I’ll make my own jedi order with black jack and hookers

I like that Luke could have kids and mara jade. I also just can't get enough of THE GANNER!

While Luke's Legends Jedi Order had it's share of hiccups, such as having a fair share of students fall to the Dark Side, it was definitely an improvement over the Prequel era Jedi. Maybe Eck's prediction will come true and we'll get more unabridged Legends audiobooks, or even a continuation of that timeline (unlikely, but who knows after Star Wars Visions).
It wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to assume that he also came across other Force Sensitives and passed on some pointers from his own journey.
it would just be a very pointless show, everything would build to a terrible tepid climax of random lightning wiping out the school
@@randalthekidd7006 what about having survivors. The Show could serve a purpose showing the formation of a new Jedi order, but also how the survivors of that fateful night reacted.
Just retcon the sequels. There's no point in saving them. Purge it and start fresh.
@@pedrokantor3997 The only thing to retcon would be Luke’s Jedi order being completely destroyed. And instead their would be survivors.
Retconning the entirety of the sequels would be pointless, and would just piss off the fans who love them.
The New Jedi Order was so dope!
Essentially, he took the Jedi as they were just before the reformations and then made them better from there
Then we got depression Luke saying that the jedi should die
If the Vong invaded during the canon timeline, Luke would let everyone die.
Surprised that Leia did not run his ass through during Luke's last visit. Luke did create Kylo from Leia's son, by training him, then attempting to murder him. Disney Luke is a excrement sandwich of a person. Coward, weak, and useless.
@@twotone3471 tbf for "canon" Luke barely anything make sense in the sequel trilogy, if anything at all
@@slimetank394 It would have made more sense to have Leia have tracked him down when it was known where Luke was, and while he was force projecting to stop Kylo, have Leia Behead him. If Luke had done to my kid what Luke did to his nephew, that would be the first thing on the agenda. Luke was not running away from the first order, he was running away from his sister, who should have skewered his ass instead of accepting a trinket from him. Much more satisfying than the Mary Poppins treatment Leia got as a sendoff.

It’s annoying that the new canon material has basically reduced Luke’s Jedi order to a repeat of the mistakes of the prequel Jedi
While a New Jedi Order will be better under Rey Skywalker.
Actually i think that does have some relevance in the Jedi Academy games
@@joby-wankenobinolan3428 there’s also the Thought Bomb, though maybe that’s different…
This will forever remain true canon for me.
*Luke:* Hunts the entire to find the Scared Jedi Text..
*Also Luke:* Doesn't read them..
average sequel jedi master vs average Legends Jedi Chad
It also makes sense that Luke would end the attachment ban, seeing as he was a successful product of an "attachment" during the Old Jedi Order
My version of Luke’s Code is:
In emotion, there is understanding.
This is the star wars i grew up with not what the filf they call star wars now.
Luke's NJO before the Vong war VS Episode 3 Jedi order full fight.
Disney should just release 90 minute films in the 2003 clone wars animation and title them “Star Wars Legends movies”
It’s a win-win. Disney makes more money and they appease both fandoms.
Man this makes me sad considering how well written Luke and the new jedi order was with allowed emotions and attachments etc vs the shitty order thst didn't even produce 1 actual jedi knight in the movies
Literally the CHAD EU order vs the Virgin movie order
This is absolutely true... at least until Denningverse when basically everyone went out of character.
I believe Jedi benefited from the collapse during the clone wars as they had become too political and ritualistic
And that basically none of them (including the masters) actually follow their (pretty much) only rule, which was to ""keep their emotions on Neutral/non existent"" (if that even makes sense)
@@felps_4500 yeah that does.

Of course Luke’s Order was better, it had Kyle Katarn.
Why is there a question mark whether its better. OF COURSE ITS BETTER and I for one see this as the real canon sequel story for Star Wars.
Almost all Old Republic pre Ruusan Jedi would enjoy the New Jedi Order.
Not all Jedi in Republic era would like the changes.
Mace Windu would be an ass about it like he was to Anakin and QuiGon

This was the Jedi Order the sequel trilogy needed.
Killing his Jedi Order in the Sequel Trilogy Robs us of an MCU-Style Spinoff with an Elderly Luke as IT's Nick Fury.
Then the day Darth Mickey came, and the entirety of the galaxy far,far away cried out in terror, before being annihilated.
I really liked this one. Luke is pretty awesome. Well until someone is given creative control of his character who probably shouldn't be. Mistakes happen on an intellectual property especially one as old and varied as Star Wars.
The other huge advantage of allowing Jedi to have relationships is that their kids will most likely be _powerful in the Force._
The Old Jedi Order rules actually bred out Force sensitivity and make it a negative genetic trait - you join the Order and you're _removed from the gene pool._ Then the only way new potential Jedi get born is by recessive genes of those too weak in the Force to be Jedi themselves hooking up.
"The other huge advantage of allowing Jedi to have relationships is that their kids will most likely be powerful in the Force."
The force can pull itself back from a bloodline, but also that's brought up as a negative by Vergere.
Physical anomalies or disabilities or mental instability or something…
The other issues are;
1 - the Midi-chlorians are organelle within the people of a GFFA, like our mitochondria, so the genetics of it work a bit different than say guessing whether the baby will have blue or brown eyes with a pea chart.
2 - the Midi-chlorians and more importantly, the Force has a will of it’s own. Which is something that Plagueis was struggling to tame.
It works in theory, but not without issue in practice. The Skywalkers and some races like the Sith or the Rakata were anomalies.
7:24 Man, that outro is hilarious! 😂
During the Dark Nest Trilogy, Luke's Jedi Order definitely became more structured. At that time the order had risen to about a thousand members. I remember when Luke used the Force to summon all Jedi back to the temple to hold a meeting. He basically told everyone "get your shit together and dedicate yourself to being a Jedi or get the hell out of my order". lol 🤣
This is what the Mouse took from us.
The Legends version of Luke's Jedi Academy is the real version.
