    My favorite Luke. He actually did stuff. The funny thing is Legends Luke failed a bunch of times and lost many people he cared about, including his wife. Difference? He never gave up. He never ran from his problems but instead learned from them and became wiser. He's more heroic than anyone from Disney Star Wars.

      @Chosen One ah, so she's stolen the journey and destiny that was rightfully Luke's in Return of the Jedi.
      Rey is a poorly written Mary Sue that has done nothing to earn the right to rebuild the Jedi.
      She's NOT Luke's adopted daughter. They never had that kind of bond.
      And Force dyads are stupid. Not how the Force or how Force bonds work.

      @Chosen One
      "no she has not"
      Yes. She has.
      "Luke restarted a Jedi order in canon"
      Making a half-assed attempt to train 12 students and then giving up because one of them turned to the dark side is not "restarting a Jedi Order" its pathetic.
      "He trained grogu
      Grogu will have a important part in later events"
      You mean the same Grogu that rejected Luke's training to rejoin Mando? Yeah...ok.
      "Ashoka part of Luke order
      So maybe she and Ezra will help spread Luke order to the unknown regions"
      Ahsoka straight up says she's not part of Luke's order in BOBF. Ezra remains to be seen, but so far there's nothing to indicate he's part of Luke's half-assed attempt at training Jedi.
      "Luke sacrificed himself for the rebels
      Without him
      They would of all lost…….."
      That was Jake Skywalker not Luke. The actual Luke would have shown up in person. And not given up.
      "Rey will know not to repeat the same mistakes Luke did"
      Mistakes that, had Luke been written properly, he would never have made. Rey still doesn't deserve Luke's destiny of restarting the Jedi. You've done nothing to actually refute that point.
      "The Jedi order was destroyed by Darth Krayt"
      If memory serves, he did a lot of damage, but he didn't obliterate the Jedi to the last man the way Palpatine did. They were eventually able to rally and fight back.
      "Jaina foresaw Jacen would be the new Palpatine"
      That's kinda why she stabbed him through the heart.
      "Got it’s the same has canon"
      They are absolutely not the same. Just tell us how much Disney is paying you dude.

    EU Luke's New Jedi Order is the best iteration of the Jedi Order. Luke doesn't know what the old Order was like so he just uses his own experiences to build the next generation of the Jedi Knights.
    - No more rules of attachment.
    - Not getting too involved with Republic politics like the old Order (which led the Prequel Order to their downfall)
    - Allowing adults to join the Order.
    The New Jedi Order went through multiple conflicts but they still stay strong 135 years later in the Legacy era (Cade Skywalker time).

      EU’s Luke did the most important thing that the Old Jedi never could… he allowed the Jedi to embrace their emotions while balancing themselves with the Force. He didn’t try to force them to become robotic slaves to the Force’s will, but true allies of the Force who would know both themselves and the Force. Luke became what I believed Qui-Gon would have been if Qui-Gon had become Grand Master. Also, in a funny way… Luke did what the Jedi Exile tried to do ages ago… create a new, better version of the Jedi Order without the dogma that weighed down the Jedi of old.

      @@trevinodude I understand what you're getting at, but the Jedi never rejected emotions. They developed friendships within the order and the master and student relationship is a sacred one, like a father/son or grandfather/granddaughter relationship. EU's version of the NJO actually followed logical progression with the Order facing truly difficult and complicated moral questions every step of the way. It made you care about the characters and understand that you don't have to repeat the mistakes of the past, you can learn.

    I always considered Legends to be the true canon. It fits with the OT and prequel trilogy like a glove pertaining to the lore and characters. Luke would definitely become powerful and run a Jedi Academy that actually went somewhere. Disney canon contradicts Luke to the point where I can't see those films as canon, therefore I don't let it bug me too much. Whatever Disney does is meaningless, because there's a huge amount of Legends material to enjoy. I'm not disregarding the Legends stories, games, micro series, etc just because some multi-billion dollar corporation said that their awful fan fiction is the real story. Also Jacen Solo is easily in my top 5 favorite characters along with Vader/Anakin and Darth Bane. He's complex and steals the show every time he's around. Glad you're back by the way. This video was great.

    You know what? Dark Empire brings up a good concept. While Anakin may have redeemed himself by saving Luke, Luke still needed a challenge to prove he was capable of being a Jedi on his own. Besides Palpatine coming back 6 years later for Luke to deal with as opposed to 30 years later by some random person is a more fulfilling story.
    Just finished Dark Empire. Everyone who says it's bad hasn't actually read it. I'm glad I read Tales of the Jedi beforehand because it made the story so much stronger. Luke AND Leia come into their own and it's a beautiful thing seeing the start of his order. When he and his new students all stand united and declare the return of the Jedi I had to stop and take it all in. It sucks we'll never see this universe continue and we'll never see it adapted to live action.

      I have issues with Dark Empire. Mostly the Emperor pulling out not one, but _three_ new superweapon types. World devastators were cool. Eclipse-class SSDs were... A little much, particularly the Emperor pulling out a second one immediately after the first's destruction. The Galaxy Gun is IMO tied with the Sun Crusher for the single worst superweapon idea. It's filled with stuff that's _cool,_ but it forces the question "why didn't the Emperor pull out any of this to begin with?".
      Some of it I understand, superweapons can be developed secretly post-Endor, Palpatine's younger, stronger body may let him channel all the force ability of a young body with all the skill of an old master. But you're telling me he didn't bring the Eye, or whatever that old but OP Dreadnought model was, or Sentinels, or anything Sith Alchemy related with him to the final battle against the Rebels?
      Guess what the Disney trilogy decided to copy about the already controversial Dark Empire saga?

    What I love about legends is how much it built on itself. I've never interacted much with post episode 6 legends (I was a prequel kid, episode 1 got me into star wars) I've read up on wookieepedia, so I know the broad strokes. Exar Kun as a name is familiar to me from the old republic content however, and I never realised he appeared here as well. Legends Luke IS the Chosen One. After Anakin's fall and later death, the Force chose Luke to be the galaxy's beacon of Light. But he also had to earn it. He didn't just become OP overnight, he spent years and years training, fighting, and learning. Decades of wars, invasions, galactic-destroying threats, loss on the grand and intimate scale, countless brushes with temptations to the Darkside. Luke was pushed to be the absolute best he could possibly be. Not for himself but for the ones he loved. And that meant everyone. Didn't matter if they were his family, his friends, his comrades, his students, his detractors, or the countless strangers of the universe that he could/would never know. Luke Skywalker valued life and peace. And he would happily lay down his life if he could achieve that for even one person. Luke was a great and inspiring leader, a fearless and unparalleled warrior, as well as a patient teacher wise beyond his years. But he was also a supportive and caring brother, a loving and steady husband, a proud and nurturing father, and kind and loyal friend. But at his very core, he was a fierce, nigh-unstoppable guardian of those who could not protect themselves.
    That's the Luke I know. That's the Luke Skywalker I grew up idolizing. And I'll never understand how anyone can find that boring.

      I think from the prophecy of the one who will bring the greatest change.
      It's four Chosen Ones who woven the fabric of history.
      The First was the person who sparked the fault of the Jedi. (I don't know his name but he was the only one who survived the Padawan massacre on planet Taris) And allows the Jedi to realize the threat of the Sith who are about to return.
      The Second was Darth Vader, in the comic about ancient prophecy shows the portrait of Darth Vader, not Anakin... This means his action of removing the old Jedi which stagnant the Force and his redemption that allows the next Chosen One to protect the Galaxy from the Chaos that follows.
      The Third was Luke Skywalker, he was chosen by the force to save the universe and guide a newly born Lightside to balance the Galaxy while taking care of all of the mess that his father dug up.
      The fourth was Cage Skywalker who would end the disbalance between the force and end Sith who brought absolute Darkside to the Galaxy.

From the message you're trying to convey, the narration you provide, the editing, and especially the music you use. Masterful. This video is so beautiful it makes me sad for what might have been, and what we lost with the sequel trilogy we got. This version of the story honors and expands on the saga and caps everything off to a fitting end. I understand that this isn't the story George Lucas would have used for his sequels, but I trust George would have given us a fitting deep and epic end that would have tied together everything that had come before it. It's good that we at least got the expanded universe and explorations of it like this.

    Mike Stackpole author of the first half of the X-Wing novels once told of the writing process for Star Wars. After Timothy Zahn got us all interested in Star Wars again, there was a role of loremaster at Lucas. The job was to know everything Star Wars and to make sure everything new fit within the universe and the OT. After they approved of the stories then they were turned over to George. Only when they got his approval, new content was allowed to be released.
    It was why Star Wars became one cohesive universe. Some content was de-canonized, mostly stuff from Star Wars insider and Jawa Trader magazines and some from the early cartoons, novels, and comics. Much of the Canon was established from the RPG and the Dark Horse comics.
    George has always considered anything not directly developed by him little more than fan fiction. Had he written the actual sequel movies he too probably would have stepped all over the content from the Expanded Universe. However since he did sign off on it, I considered it canon way more than the sequel trilogy.

    • @FMK03
      @FMK03 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No, initially, George simply didn't see the EU as HIS work. There's also the fact that George has been very inconsistent with his stances on the canonicity of the EU ever since the PT ended.

    • @WolfsHaven
      @WolfsHaven ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@FMK03 initially I agree. The earlier cartoons, comic books, games, etc. George just licensed stuff for money.
      The role playing game took it upon themselves to start trying too make one cohesive universe out of as much stuff they could. It was one of the primary sources the eventual loremasters used in deciding what was canon in the EU.
      However when Lucas was creating his sequel outline, just before he sold to Disney, he stated he was going to tell the story he wanted to. He wasn't going to be beholden to stories that he didn't write.
      That's what Kennedy and Disney used as reference to decanonize the EU when they took over. I've not seen the outline George handed to Kennedy but supposedly he had very different idea for Anikin's grandchildren than what had already been written for the EU. She and Disney didn't really follow his plan either. Hence his comment about selling his children into slavery after TFA came out.

    • @FMK03
      @FMK03 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@WolfsHaven No, they didn't use that as a reference as evidenced by them dumping Lucas' story treatments, which rarely, if ever, end up being reflected or come into fruition in the final product.

    • @WolfsHaven
      @WolfsHaven ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Something in one interview Kennedy, in trying to justify the abandonment of the EU, stated that George didn't even plan to follow the EU in the treatments he gave them. Ultimately in her discussions with Disney, they chose to go in their own direction, based on what was in the six movies. She's made several references to the treatments over the years stating that George had broke Legends material and even what fans believe as canon in some instances, therefore she feels justified in the direction Disney took with the sequels.
      Many of these statements were made on camera and in printed interviews. Maybe she made it up but when you add in George's own statement about wanting to tell his own story and not follow someone else's story, it fits.
      George has been supportive of and collaborated with them in the direction Jon and Dave have taken but that doesn't mean it's the direction he would have taken had he written the story himself.
      Even when you look at published copies of early script drafts and notes of the OT and prequels, it's often different from what we saw on screen. Sometimes even drastically. George seems to change his mind a lot, for various reasons. Look at the changes in special edition and subsequent others in updated reprints.
      It kind of reminds me of Trent Reznor constantly changing and re-recording his music after the original albums came out. He's never truly satisfied with his own work. George pretty much seems to be the same way.

    • @FMK03
      @FMK03 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@WolfsHaven No, that's an excuse they used to decanonize the EU, you also have to remember the whole "There's no source material" argument as well, that and they immediately turned down George and his story treatments for the ST. So, does that mean that they used George's mere treatments, which I feel the need to say again, rarely, if ever, end up being reflected in the final product, to disregard George's treatments?

Hell, in the EU, Luke fell briefly to become the apprentice of the Emperor Reborn, and he found his way back.
    No. In the EU, if Luke's nephew was going to fall, Luke knew that love, compassion, and support would guide him back. EU Luke wouldn't have driven the kid further away by trying to kill him.
    I hate the Disney Canon so much. They can't even give us good New Republic Era content without it shitting on everything and making it all about the Sequels.

Kill Chewie, kill Anakin Solo fine, but don't turn it into the biggest war ever. But that's just my opinion, perhaps it doesn't undermine the mivies, idk. I don't think they're actually more important than Palpatine but they're nonetheless too close to that level. ESPECIALLY that they invade merely 21 years after ROTJ.
      LOTF has some issues, training Boba Fett didn't make much sense to me either but perhaos even worse was Vergere retcon. Mandalorians were just Katen Traviss' irrational obsession. I miss Legends Luke so much. I really hate what Disney did to Luke, making him to be just like the Old Jedi when… in my opinion, the man who redeemed Anakin Skywalker should be anything but. Force Ghost Obi-Wan said it best in Heir of the Empire, after all. He’s the first of the new Jedi. He changes the Jedi to embrace their mortal emotions while balancing that with their connection to the Force. I’m not saying Luke shouldn’t have failings… hell Legends Luke failed a bit too, Luke was almost killed by Jorus, he almost lost his students several times, he lost Jacen Solo to the Dark Side, and Dark Empire was a MAJOR oof in Luke’s journey since he almost lost himself into the dark side… and yet what makes Legends Luke so great, is that he never gave up. Luke grew from each of his failings and became a Jedi Mastee beyond Yoda and the Old Council because of how he grew beyond the fear of the dark side. You could also argue with Dark Empire, if you want to add context of the Chosen One prophecy, that Anakin fulfilled the prophecy by defeating the main Palpatine, but Luke had to grow beyond the Chosen One by confronting the returned Palpatine on his own terms… and unlike Anakin who’s bond to Padmé was used to trap him… Luke’s bond to his friends, especially Leia as his sister, freed him. Thus, Luke finally became a Chosen One in his own right.

Every weekend the staff would screen "Old" movies (this was like early 90s) we sat on the upper gallery, and I remember dangling off staring at the screen, not blinking. Because I saw this farm boy, with the courage to rise against insurmountable evil and in fairness it really resonated. It got me hooked on a lot of stories like this. Frankly helping shape the person I am today. Now look it is just a film at the end of the day, it's not Macbeth or anything, but sometimes a "silly movie" about space samurai monks fighting evil sorcerers is all you really need to get that spark going.

    Star Wars should learn from Ghostbusters when IT Reboot itself in 2016, but when it Flop by killing off Bill Murray, & The Giant Ghostbusters Logo as the Antagonist, They Revert back to the Original Canon with Afterlife that Respects the Lore, & Directed by Ivan Ritchman's Son.

    Legends Luke will always be my canon. Disney did Mark Hamill dirty and i will always hate them for that

    I really love the Fate of the Jedi series. Even tho its kinda wild with abeloth, all the way from the first book, Luke learns that he has to be accountable and set a good example for his Jedi, and for the normal not force using citizens. But also he has to let the Order he built mature on its own and learn how to make hard decisions that will affect their relationship with the rest of the galaxy and that will define who the Jedi will become, and hopefully avoid the past mistakes of the Old Republic Jedi. Meanwhile Luke learns how to be a better father as he travels with his son, while Ben himself is maturing and learning many of the lessons that can only be learnt through experience. All in all, its such an awesome series, personally my favorite in legends.

    The accusation that Luke doesn‘t grow in EA is dumb and like a lot of modern critiques of „old“ Star Wars, comes from a very simplistic idea of plot and character. Something along the lines of „the plot of any story has to be super-duper-clever and complex and characters need to constantly „grow““ both of which are not actual rules for good storytelling.
    In the case of Luke, he already had his big character arc in the OT. And once that happens a character should settle down to some degree and become more static.
    But aren‘t static characters more boring? Kind of but mostly no. The conflict just shifts from inside the character to the outside. For example, now that you have a more finished character that knows who he is, you can challenge that character and his traits and see how he deals with those challenges.
    And of course to some degree the character can take a backseat and let the kids do the actual growing. You know, like adults do.
    Is this (maybe) less interesting than what happens to Luke in the OT. Sometimes, but honestly the alternative to letting your characters get static is to brute-force constant character change and inner turmoil on them and in most cases that‘ll end up breaking them. Which is exactly what Rian Johnson did.

    Luke in the EU being powerful is justified, he's the son of the Chosen One so obviously he is gonna be naturally powerful. All of that potential in Anakin passed on to his children. Plus, he had decades after ROTJ to learn and grow his power. He wasn't held back by restrictions and people telling him: "No you can't do that, it's forbidden." He just did it. Plus most of Luke's OP feats mostly happened in the latter half of the post ROTJ EU content, at the height of his power in his 60s

    Thank you not making this all about bashing the sequels and saying it's okay to like them. At the very least I will agree Legends gave Luke a better ending since Rise of Palpatine (I refuse to call that Rise of Skywalker) didn't solve the plot the sequels revolved around. Thanks for nothing JJ Abrams.

      My Dad described JJ Abrams as "Like a kid who asks to play with your toys and then breaks them".

    • @dragonstormx
      @dragonstormx ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@HumanoidDerpling That pretty well sums up the end result of his work on Star Wars.
      Abrams isn't a creative director when it comes to telling stories, though he is creative with action set pieces. He mostly puts new spins on what came before. Some of that worked in TFA.
      Rise of Palpatine, not so much. Abrams stripped out everything that made the sequels' characters distinct. Rubbing salt in the wound as someone who liked the twist with Rey being a nobody in TLJ, Abrams said his idea for her being Palpatine's granddaughter came because he did like the twist of there being no big reveal of her parents being nobodies but it gave him the idea of "What if she came from an evil family?"
      That idea could have worked if it was built from TFA, but not following TLJ saying Rey's family and where she came from wasn't important. Especially since this meant Rey's character arc was tied to her family for a third movie in a row. The message of one's family not defining them also didn't work since Kylo Ren's redemption meant he was a hero who came from a family of the galaxy's greatest heroes.
      It is quite an accomplishment that Abrams managed to take the fans divided by TFA & TLJ and please none of them.
