Hi Craig. My starting principles for my model railway are:
    1) Every model railway is a fantasy, even the most faithful representations of the real thing (e.g. ‘Bournemouth West’), so embrace the opportunities for imagination;
    2) Prevent future boredom and disinterest by making my layout as stylistically flexible as possible. So my loco fleet flexes between old and new eras, Teesside and Gloucestershire themes, OO, HO and 009. I’ll run whatever my mood takes me on the day.
    3) Whatever it looks like, it is still a railway, so don’t compromise on railway operational practice. Britain’s railways observe left hand running, not right hand, and single line or wrong road working practice and procedures are now rarer than hen’s teeth.

I've based my shunting layout off a design from Budget Model railways but as most of my stock is steam era I'm going for an early/late steam and early green diesel look (30s to 60s pretty much) and it's not exhibition level of detailing/modelling but I'm happy with it so far for my first proper layout.

I get it. Perhaps from a different perspective I frequently find myself feeling unvalidated in the hobby but because I dont have dcc, dont own any accurascale, have no lasercut or 3d printed items as theu are financially prohibitive. I also happen to be very happy with the standards of model railway items from 20 years ago. A poor dinosaur who doesnt belong possibly? In short, anyone can feel a little dismissed and unvalidated for a range of reasons. Also, yes, if I was to follow my true nostalgia for railways i would model the llangollen railway 1986!!

I mentioned, a couple of weeks ago, about my baseboards which were put away ‘for now…’
For some time I’ve considered a preserved railway as being the ideal ‘rule 1’ layout, my main proviso being that everything on there would be something found in preservation (exact liveries/numbers not being essential, as they seem to get changed for no apparent reason!)
Incorporating a small terminus on the ‘real’ railway (I’ve got a couple of DMUs to use…) and not needing a station or a lot of of running space 🙂
Thanks Craig - you may just have given things the nudge they needed!

you are spot on. I model my railway memories, and that is memories so most of the modelling is very selective but generally follow some rules of how railways functions. But it only has to be good enough. Selective compression which means shorter railway platforms, smaller industries but weathering and so forth can be done using photos. Now when putting plaster on a layout i would advise you to mix some pigment, black, into the plaster when mixing it in a jar. that way you won't have to fill in all the white cracks and spots when the plaster has dried. Anyway great looking layout and love your comments !

Thanks for another great video Craig. I have great memories of Neville Hill from travelling for Garforth to Leeds and back through the 70's, 80's and 90's. I always looked up from my book or magazine to see what was on Shed that day and it's influenced my version of the hobby ever since. We should always remember that the hobby belongs to everyone, the child with a simple loop in their bedroom (we were all there once), the person with their Dr Who layout or Steam Punk. The ultra-realistic Skipton station, or someone like me who just models their own version of reality. It's our time and our money, we can do what we like and enjoy and we all have a place in the hobby.
Just a quick example of something that happened to me in a model shop, that I won't name. I was buying something and the owner came up to me and asked what I was modelling, I told him I was just starting, he said I bet you have a Flying Scotsman, I said yes (had it for many years) and he said what's the point, turned and walked away. I was furious and haven't been back since, this is the sort of attitude that will affect the hobby and also stop people going to his shop, the very thing we are all trying to make sure survives.
P.S. I love that you use the word BECK... I use it and my kids look at me like I'm an alien.

Interestingly you've revisited almost exactly what was being considered 60 years ago, mainly on the cuff of the mass beecing cuts, when awareness of preservation was coming to the forefront, and modelling followed form.
The advent of generally available historic models (e.g the triang rocket and lord of the isles) also provided impetus.
I could add that those great model railways - THE model railways: Buckingham branch, gorre & daphetid, the V & O, the Sherwood branch and that most glorious: delta lines all were of a semi-fictitious nature, but operated on a real railway basis.
A model railway from the early twenties, quite unfashionable in modern idiom, yet was all correctly interlocked signalling, and the owner could run correctly from the Paddington timetable
You refer to rule 1 being a cop out? Interestingly communications those years ago many considered modelling a preserved railway as being a cop out.
People have different views and definitions as to what is a model railway, what is awkward is when they push their views as being the only proper way...

In my humble opinion, there are two groups within this hobby. Railroad modelers and Model railroaders. Model railroaders are those that build layouts to primarily run trains to a high level of authenticity. Railrod modelers are those that are more focused on the accuracy to the detail of the layout and the sceneray along with the basic function of the layout. Both of these categories are valid under the general 'Model Train' hobby.

Spot on, Craig. What you saw at 1102.5 on the 39th of Feb isn't what the guy (or gal) standing next to you at the same time - saw. And if you spend enough time just watching, either in person at your favourite spot, on one of the many CCTV cameras that now abound - or on the tube that others have recorded - you can see all kinds of weird and sometimes amusing combinations of things, such as the triple-headed 66's towing one flat car that paused at your station while the crew went to the'little-boy's' room and the cafe for a cuppa - or an East Coast liveried train of some description on the West coast - because there were diversions in place due to engineering work, etc - or simply because a loco had been 'borrowed' to fill in a traction gap due to technical or weather-related difficulties.
There is even a vid showing (if I recall) three trains hauled by 66's, all nose-to tail on the same section, because they were engineer's trains moving rails, sleepers, and ballast.
    -
When it comes to deciding on how and where to lay your track - a good starting point is real life - and that is where it usually goes wrong. A 'real' railway is either a long thin thing in the middle of nowhere, or a sprawling array of sidings and sheds that occupies a vast amount of space, neither of which can be accurately represented on a flat 6' x 1.5' plank in a corner. So what you have to do is create a representation - and a good place to start is an old map! That shows where the line went and what was around it - that gives it a purpose. (Trains have to be going somewhere!)
Another good reference, to give you a guide, is a book titled Track Atlas of Mainland Britain (assuming you are modelling the UK!) - for the more modern images, or if you want older - Pre-Grouping Atlas and RCH junction diagrams. Yes, to buy new, they're expensive, but haunt your local 2nd hand bookstalls or even the boxes on the floor at a show of some form! Find a plan that suits your ideal, adjust it to fit your space, and see if the bare track works for what you want to do, before you add ballast and scenery. (It is easier to alter it or change your mind)

Ottery st Mary is a small station with a passing loop and 3 sidings. But I remember it when it was open, andhave spent years collecting track and building suitable stock for it, but rule 1 still applies on some engines that will appear on it from time to time. Also other items that have been seen are a million pound precise weed killing train and HST storage.

Hello, Craig. A great video and grand discussion. Good thoughts and ideas spur others. This does so. In the end, terms like "proper" are meaningless, anyhow. It is like language and "proper English" or "proper German." Language is fluid, and what was proper 25 years ago is no longer proper, and what is proper today will be different from what is proper in years to come. The same with words and customs, clothing... everything. As you said, it is all about enjoyment. I like the fun aspects and the folks having fun. While, I would not say "Rule One is a cop out," I see your point, too. I think of it as a justification. Some folks are very centered on era and location, as you pointed out. Then folks like me, who are very late into the hobby in life with no prior experiences, so I would not even know what "proper" is. As in so many things, there is too much judgment and "right vs. wrong," whereas I am more of a "fly your freak flag proudly." The hobby and the world are big enough to accommodate everyone. As the old song from Rocky Nelson says, "you can't please everyone; so, you got to please yourself." Cheers on some great thoughts which spurred some of my own thoughts.

    Hmmm, nostalgia bubble?
Mine isn't to do with my train spotting days, that was late 1970's blue/grey and dirt, copious amounts of dirt! As much as I enjoyed it my modelling was never inspired by it. Living in London I had all the major termini to visit, plus depots and yards and they were a great adventure.
However my nostalgia bubble starts on holidays in north Cornwall and north Devon, the late 1960's exploring the then newly abandoned stations on the Padstow and Ilfracombe lines, or seeing my dad off on a train at Bodmin Road or the last year of trains at Braunton (he always had to leave on a Thursday to start back at work Friday).
These are the areas I want to model, but I have no memory of their operations.
My new layout will be made to look like these areas, sometime just before WW2, but my stock will be representative of any time from Edwardian era to late sixties, depending on what era I wany to run that day.

Nice one Craig, and no it wasn’t a rant. The hobby is a broad church of what each individual wants from their efforts and nobody is wrong in their representation. I think you are right in the preserved railway ideology that you can have steam, green diesels, br blue or any of the more modern colour schemes making the layout not era specific as such, but is will be era specific to the latest livery or loco you run. But I agree it broadens what you can run. Richard at New Junction has done so perfectly being able to run his heritage line alongside his take on the East Coast main line with HSTs, 91s, Azumas and freight trains (which appears mor and more to be look what Accurascale has released this week !. Ok why not a shameless plug.) So especially when being confined to a smaller space it gives you so much more scope of what you can do and run.
Your second point was nostalgia and you can call it that but it was a point in life where we fell in love with railways and trains. I was born in Eastleigh a railway town with 3 generations of my peers in the industry including both parents, but I was brought up in east Anglia. Do Bachman 4 car southern stock look like realistic models yes !, but they don’t do it for me so we choose which nostalgia we prefer sometimes.
And finally in this war and peace epic….. I’ve never thought your ballasting looked like….what did you call it ? Dog sick? 😂… not everyone can be the prototypical artist. Certainly not me. Don’t judge your efforts compared to what you see on TH-cam. We all do everything to the best of our abilities and there are going to be those who maybe able to do something’s better than us. That’s a fact of life. If I’m happy with a diorama of a small size I don’t care if it’s of the same quality of my favorite TH-camrs if my skill set isn’t to their standard.
Keep on modeling and I will keep watching buddy!.

If I want a black class 20, I'll paint one; if I want a freelance J94 Austerity, I'll have one. Real heritage railways have been doing fictitious paint jobs for years (Intercity or Loadhaul 50's, B1 Mayflower in LNER green, to name 3), so why can't I? I model modern image, but my dilemma is that I collect models from what is referred to as era 8 right through to era 11. As such I need a layout that one week could be set in say the 1990's and then next week maybe present day 2024. My kids like watching the trains go by, and I do like to run prototypical length trains. This requires a lot of space and expense in modern image. My foucus going forward is on modelling scenery and builds and one of my daughters is keen to get involved with this side. I am no club level modeller and don't need this to look perfect. Just needs to look reasonably realistic.

Any model is a representation of the real thing, not a perfect miniature replica. It is the impression that is important. In my experience dead accurate models of a real line can be very boring because there is so little on them. Models which are unashamedly silly - treacle mine narrow gauge railway, for example, display the greatest levels of skill and ingenuity on the part of the creator.

Model railway is such a diverse word as the word flower for instance, is it colorful , is it small, is it rare, maybe you don't like Roses, but prefer Daisies ect..
And in the end it's about intrest, passion, skills you have, where you lose yourself in, what can you afford, otherwise you wouldn't even start building a layout.
As an observer you automatically favor the layouts that is closes to your field of intrest, that's normal.
Does model mean that it really has to exist or not?
Then my answer would be, is a SiFi book a book, it never happend, but stil it's a book.
And for the observer if it's not your thing, just walk away , look at the model railway that melts your hart, but keep your downgrading opinion on other peoples dreams to your self, nobody asked for that, just be happy for him or her that they found the the thing that brings them joy.
If asked what you think of it, you always could say "it's not my field of intrest, but I glad you found yours", that's expectable, saying it's rubbish that's just being rude and cruel.
If asked how you would do it, than an opinion could be given that reflex on you with respect to other man's work, consider it as a word of advice.
Let the person be happy in his fantasy world, and share the joy of model railroading…

Fantastic video. But you avoided the biggest of all controversial modelling subjects...... Thomas the tank engine and Friends lol. I've mainly modelled Thomas layouts and always get those who say why U bothering with that? Or it's not a proper railway. One time my model railway club wanted me to sell my entire Thomas collection and build a modern image layout and buy the stock for the club to use, exhibit and own. I was 14 and said no. Was told I needed to sell it all as Thomas wasn't allowed and that I shouldn't have an interest in steam as I'm not old enough remember it. There is a massive van of worms when it comes to Thomas layouts but for those who do put effort in and research find out that the Rev Awdry followed exact railway prototype rules and running, had several of his own model railways using Thomas and ran to prototype. But it's one of those people see the face on a loco and laugh or scoff at the modellers. I lost track of how many times I've put or seen thomas layouts run with Thomas then 30 mins later all the face stuff is fine and it's "proper" engine's and people think it's an entirely different layout. But at the end of the day it's not about rule 1 or what's remembered it should be about what you as that person building or modelling likes, not what others want you to have. It's your vision on your journey. Simples

Modelling is modelling full stop. The quality of modelling generally gets better with practice and experience. If everyone liked the same thing, the hobby would be boring, it's the variety and different approaches to things that make it interesting. Everyone models for pleasure and if that means "Rule 1" to you that's fine, modelling to "true scale" is fine too if that is what floats your boat. The main point is that you can have an excellent, high quality layout that is totally fictitious that is as good as any "true scale" prototypical layout.
At an exhibition the public want to see things moving, if something is moving they generally stay a while and take in the scenery. Those where you have to wait 20 minutes for something to move because it's running to a real timetable wonder why the public don't hang around and move on.

Hi Craig. You're actually supporting Rule 1: for some, it means modelling prototypically 100%. For others, it's having a tail-chaser with a class 66 hauling private owner coal wagons.
Your choice of modelling a heritage railway is as valid as either of these approaches, and everything in between. To be honest, I think modelling a heritage railway is a genius idea, because for them, making do with whatever they have to hand is prototypical.
And whilst on the subject, even in the "real" world of railways, "prototypical" means nothing: the only thing that matters is getting the trains running reliably and on time, by any permissable means necessary. For example, the other day, Les Gilpin posted a video of a class 66 hauling a couple of bogie flat wagons dating back to the steam era of the 1950s. So, prior to seeing this, such a consist would have been viewed by the purists as "non-prototyoical", and an abuse of Rule 1. But now these wagons have been spotted on the "real" railway, the consist has to be viewed as prototypical. One can be driven mad by such things!
Finally, just hold onto the fact that the vast majority of layouts are never shared on YT, so you're comparing yourself against a very small percentage of the nation's - and world's - layouts. Compared to the layouts of us non-YT modellers, your efforts are in the Premier League.
