Was a great show....shame I couldn't make it down. I've always supported my local model shops.....I'm lucky to have 3 including sawyers that are local to me.....nuffys in Bolton and the loco shed in prestwich... Use to have hulton models but Brian has now retired a few years ago. Use them or loose them! ..I love going down for a natter and a brew and listen to all grandads stories..
I agree with you, there is a place for both local shops like Sawyers and the larger retailers, sometimes they serve different customers and sometimes both. I'm lucky that in Guildford we have Kernow's model who are great. Important to support your local shop otherwise we may well lose them.
100% true, always a good mood when collectors meet, and this mood you find all over Europe, I often go with a good friend to some Belgian, German and in the Netherlands shows as my friend is all about continental modeling, but he also joins me to a few shows I go to in the UK, what my field of intrest is, and we're both train drivers, so when we meet, it's about trains from dawn til dusk😅 But the atmosphere going up to the show, when you sit in a train or a bus and collectors find each other, the most interesting conversations pop up. Unfortunately If it comes to the hobby I'm a bit isolated from the scene, as I live in Belgium, and than the internet is a great tool, but nothing beats, going to your regular shop or train show. I've never been to the Sawyers shop, but I met them a few times on shows, and I really love there surprise bags. Anyway always love your topics, I would say " keep kalm and model on" 👍 Cheers, Danny
Hi Craig, it was a pleasure to meet you on Monday evening at Sawyer Models ‘lock in’. As you may be aware, I came into the hobby during Covid lock down as I wasn’t able to work on my ‘12 inches to the foot’ scale locomotive, being the finance director for Stanier Black 5 No 45337 now based at the East Lancs Rly. Your videos (along with other You Tubers) helped me to get started in the hobby and I fully support your theme of helping and supporting the local retailers, as I’ve received some great advice and help from Sawyer Models over the last three years. In addition, I joined my local model railway group in Leigh where there are a group of guys willing to help with any issues that I have come across. Keep up the good work of promoting the hobby and providing tips and help into the future.
Totally agree about using or losing model shops , down here in north London we had quite a few shops now sadly all gone …..glad to see the buildings being used … well done to you sir …..
@@SimonPitcher they're very well received mate! Sadly the crane was badly damaged and beyond repair so it's gone to heaven - everything else survived though ❤️😁
Well said Craig, local model shops are no different to any small independent retailer if you don’t use them you will lose them. Great progress on your layout it’s looking great
Make you right , earlier this year lost a very good friend of 40 odd years both of us model railway fans , and I lost the drive , but following Craig and Jenny on their channels along with a few others got me back into model railways …..a change of gauge and off we went so a big thanks from me …..
Fantastic video @IronHorseRailways speaking of model shops the closest is rainbow Railways in linthgow as where I live falkirk had 2 back in day mclaren models and leisure time but are no longer there
You are right, Craig. There is no point being rude. We are all modellers, and it does not matter how long you have been doing it, we can still learn. Great video, and great comments. I always like your videos but then, I am biased, my son is called Craig. 😊
If only i had a local model shop close to me. Only ones I know of in the West Midlands now are Mikes Models, Tony's Trains or Footplate Models. Sadly the closest one to me that existed closed many years ago.
Sawyer models is just up the road. Unfortunately that road happens to be the M6 and it's 117 miles up it. Nonetheless, I'll endeavour to go to sn open day at some point. In the meantime I'm picking up a DCC chip from Thunderbolt models tomorrow and hopefully visiting my own local shop, Tony's Trains, who has a great selection of second hand models in at the moment.
aup pal thats a really good point about comments and not seeing the tone etc me and my Mrs have had some right good text battles usually when she doesn't realize i'm just pissing about which to be fair is weird as i'm never not pissing about! layouts coming on pal show some more of it. Its a shame Sawyer models in the wrong side of Manchester for me otherwise i'd give em a visit. Cheers
Great video as always. With regards the text and not getting the "volume" or if it's a fun comment or sarcastic reply etc etc, I do hate that in this modern day it's all about text chats online or via email. I prefer a lot of the time to speak directly to an actual human. It's easier than text to describe the full issue as U can relate it to something else as a visual aid where as you always feel you have to hold back and restrict what you write cos you feel the person reading it will get bored and not read fully and as such fully grasp what your saying. But even sometimes the human element has, as you say, it's issues like a thump to the chops if U disagree with someone or argue to that point. The human element even in some clubs can be toxic in some instances purely based on if one person prefers a particular era. But overall for me I would always prefer the human touch and element rather than text. Ironic really since I'm having to comment via text lol
If Modeltrainstuff can come back so can Hattons. Rails of Sheffield Bought Modeltrainstuff and relaunched it. I would bet some more passionate or well to do modeler can purchase the name.
Yeah I’m just west of Glasgow . We have two very small shops within 15 miles. One , if you had two people in it , that’s all that could get in , the other seems to specialise in old plastic kits. We just don’t have anything like Sawyers up here since D and F Models retired 15 years ago (?) . I can’t believe that there’s no proper model shop in a city the size of Glasgow . So use it or lose it . Have to say I buy from Rails and TMC now , great service , but really no alternative .

Yep, agreed. Online life and real life have become completely detached. More empathy and face 2 face comms needed.
