- A selection of video from the Rio Tinto system between Mallee on the Paraburdoo line, then heading up to the Tom Price area. Before heading further north to the scenic section between Possum and Pelican. The video concludes with a selection of trains at Benson Falls, south of Emu and Western Creek.

Back late 1980.s i been on these trains from mt tom price iron ore mine to dampier at parker pt railway yards on my grade 6 camp

Outstanding video you have produced here. The best part is maybe a quarter of the viewers know these trains don't have crews in them. All remote control through Autohaul a trademark of Rio Tinto. Don't believe me check out the lead units on these trains sun visor down and not a person in the cab... Scary in a way.
So far one of the best videos I've watched from the pilbara railways, this railway is majestic, congratulations on the beautiful footage, there will be more videos of this railway from the pilbara region.. thanks for sharing

You’ve got some beautifully clear and steady shots with great sound. I’ve been up to BHP’s Yandi mine quite a bit this year, and Rio’s rail track is parallel with BHP’s access road so we get to see Rio’s trains. You know when they’re on AutoHaul because they give an automated 5 second horn blast instead of whatever a driver feels like sounding. Rio’s GEs sound better than BHP’s SD70ACes because they are much louder in notch 8!

G&W doesn’t operate in the Pilbara…
@@SantaFe5811 they do in some parts of Australia. I've seen locomotives painted in their orange and yellow "Reese's Cups" scheme.
@@michaelmorgan7893 yes, GWA operates in South Australia & the Hunter Valley. Nowhere near the Pilbara. GWA is now One Rail and is owned by fund managers now.
You could go on showing the same five minute clip of those empties all day and we'd be none the wiser.

Why do locomotives have two red MU sockets?
Question: when the train goes backloaded do they just switch the engine to the rear of the train and that becomes the front or how do they do it? Love the sounds of those engines different sound thank the ones in the USA (to me that is). scenery if beautiful. Thanks for an outstanding video. (Mississippi Gulf Coast, USA)
Hi John, rio tintos Pilbara trains run in these balloon loops at the mine and the ports, as a result the locomotives are always facing correct direction of travel. Also, of interest to note, these trains are 100% automated, driverless.
Thanks. These are about 95% similar to all the major EVO locomotives used in the US. Built in Erie or Fort Worth.
If I remember correctly, these are all automated railroads, with driverless trains, right?

Can we expect more Pilbara videos? Once their Covid restrictions ease and or lift I’ll be heading down there for a few weeks.
I live in Perth, so there are no COVID restrictions going to the Pilbara. It may be a few years before international visitors can come here unfortunately. Make sure you do research, and lots of it. It is an ultra remote part of the world. I am going back up to the Pilbara in April. So more videos will arrive then.
@@SantaFe5811 I look forward to more of the area! I have been slowly researching all four railroads over the last 10 years and seem to have a lot of the main details but I know it will be an entirely different world when I arrive even with all my research. Also thinking about maybe seeing if anyone would be interested in being a guide when I come down even just for a few days. It’ll be about 3 weeks to cover all four lines. For you guys I hope your restrictions take as long as needed, but for me I hope it’s mid this summer but I not keeping my hopes up.
@@TSBY Karratha and Port Hedland are the local towns - but population around the 40,000 mark. Perth is the largest nearby city. But the distance between the two is about the same as Los Angeles to Portland, with nothing in between. I did 7 days on all four systems and did well. My recommendation would be fly from LA to Melbourne, 10 days around south eastern Australia to see all the crazy locomotive combinations going on at the moment, then fly to Perth (where I am), then a regional flight to Newman. Hire a car and do a ‘full circle’ in a clockwise decision like I did in September. Newmsn - Karijini (best national park I’ve been to) - Tom Price - Karratha - Port Hedland - Auski - Newman. You’ll see everything that way.
There’s a lot of things to think of and adjust to. No gas stops outside of the towns. So you need to count your miles carefully to make sure you don’t run out of gas. Learning to drive on the left hand side is interesting (I had to learn how to drive on the right on the I-5 in LA in 2011!). And time of year is a big one - April to September is stunning weather, not too hot and dry - remembering being a tropical climate, there are only two seasons - wet and dry season.
I’ve been pretty fortunate, growing up and living in Australia, I’ve been to 30 US states and 4 Canadian provinces- so can assist with some “translation” works too - many different things to keep an eye out for down here, but there are also lots of similarities.

@@SantaFe5811 what is your Flickr account? I use it more than RP any more but do look at both. Thank you for the advice on flying into Newman. I was going to fly into Karratha and do the circle tour that way but from a “local” I’ll look into going via Newman way. If for some miracle it happens this year, I’ll be out there the first three weeks of September.
