    Just wanted to say the quality of your work is some of the best I've seen in the backpacking community and I love seeing your videos. The detail involved in this video is a testament to that: the fact you've included details like the amount of gas consumed is brilliant, as most reviews don't factor that in-but efficiency for thru hikers is also a consideration to bear in mind!

  • @dannyboy9817
    @dannyboy9817 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Brilliant video, thanks for sharing this test. I was almost convinced that the Jetboil system was an expensive gimmick until I saw the gas consumption figures at the end. Virtually half the gas consumption, which as well as half the running cost, means half as much needed to carry, half the weight, half the space in back pack. Game changer!

    The jet boil seems to take a similar time to boil but seems a lot more efficient on the gas.

    If there’s any amount of wind the Jetboil will smoke the MSR. The pot construction is the Jetboil secret sauce.

    The key to the jet boils is efficiency and at which point does that efficiency make it worth its extra weight as compared to say the BRS stove and a titanium cup. At which point can you get away with carrying one gas can instead of two because you do not have an option to re-supply. Or you can get away with Carrying a small gas can instead of a larger can. That always seems to be the deciding factor for me, Not boil time. As you can see from your experiment, efficiency really does stand out.

    • @banshee107
      @banshee107 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve tested a sweet spot for the BRS. To boil 2 cups of water. Opening the stove right up consumed 13.2g of fuel.
      I just did 2 turns and consumed 10.4g.

    I did a test with a meths burner and a cheap brs stove the other day and the difference is huge. Brilliant video prefer the pocket rocket but the gas saving with the jetboil would edge it for me.

    This was a very good comparison bro great job I’ve been on the fence between both of the two products you showed. Going to do some one and two night out in the woods. Obviously I want the best the lightest something efficient but what got me was the amount of gas used and that it was more quiet!

  • @dhands100

    I respectfully suggest a rematch if the Stash pot can be safely held by the PR2...please swap the pots and go for it. I don't know what all you have in the MSR kit but for sure you had at least one extra bowl so the weight difference may wind up being quite negligible. great video!

  • @salnapolitano5078
    @salnapolitano5078 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excellent video! I’ve owned both stoves. Now I only own the PR2. The Jetboil gets its edge from the pot with the heat exchanger coils. The PR2 is a better stove. Pair a PR2 with an Olicamp XTS pot and you’ve got a cracking little kit.

  • @rrcaniglia

    Is the fuel difference due to the structure of the jet boil pot? Was the fuel flow a function of throttle position or is the jet boil regulated to a lower flow?

  • @AScotsmanOutdoors
    @AScotsmanOutdoors 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The JetBoil instantly struck a chord with myself, and probably will with other military types, purely for the lack of rattle #tactical.
    As for the boil time to gas used, I'm sure we can all wait under thirty seconds for that amount of gas saving.
    Superb comparison and now makes me want to re-evaluate my hiking cook set-up again 😂
    Great stuff mate 👍🏼

    • @acadiamusic514
      @acadiamusic514 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can easily stop any rattling by keeping the stove in the little stuff sack it comes with. A little cleaning cloth or sponge in the pot also helps keep things quietly in place! I nest a backup lighter, scrubby, mini soap container, inside my 1L pot with the fuel canister and stove and have no issues with rattling or movement.

    This is exactly what I was wondering when I saw the product announcement. I've always considered jetboil to be just a smoke n mirrors gimmick product. Meanwhile I'm heating my water this morning with my trusty MSR pocketrocket. Also like I've seen many other hikers I noticed you did this experiment at full blast. I achieve a faster boil by only using about 60-70% power. This keeps the heat centered with less blow-by. The reason this happens is the metal really doesn't absorb the heat but transfers it to the liquid. The only thing I could see to speed up a boil would be to pressurize the pot. Hint hint @msr @jetboil

    and the winner at 9.5 ozs using half the fuel....drum roll...The jetboil "Flash Lite" coming to a rolling boil at 2:15. Less than half the time.
    I don't know why Jetboil felt it necessary to join the lighter set up. It wastes fuel and I don't want to bring a second canister.

    Never hold a stove by the stem when you are threading it or unthreading it to the canister. If the seal of the can isn’t very good liquid fuel can shoot out the side and burn you pretty easy

    The built-in handle of the stash is a better design. Also, the squatter ( less tall) & larger diameter pot of the stash is better. Overall, Stash is better designed.

    Tested my new Stash tonight. Not worth the money. Plastic lid is thin and won’t snap on. The fuel base won’t snap on any size can. The flame is either off or fully on, no control. If you want a fast boil of water and nothing more, go for it, but I’m sticking with my pocket rocket and a nice titanium pot with a metal lid that has strainer holes.
