@@Deborahtunes Debra's mother, Lois, from the sitcom "Everybody Loves Raymond" is considered a weak supporting character for a few key reasons: 1. Limited Character Development: Lois appears relatively infrequently throughout the show's 9 seasons, and her character does not undergo significant development or growth over time. She remains a rather one-dimensional character focused on her interactions with her son-in-law, Raymond. 2. Stereotypical Portrayal: Lois often embodies common mother-in-law stereotypes - she is overly critical of Debra, interferes in the couple's marriage, and is depicted as nosy and controlling. This makes her feel like a stock supporting character rather than a fully realized individual. 3. Lack of Narrative Importance: Lois's role is primarily to create conflict and tension within the Barone family dynamic, but she is not central to the show's core storylines or character arcs. Her presence is more about providing comedic relief than driving the narrative forward in a meaningful way. 4. Inconsistent Characterization: Lois's personality and behaviors can sometimes feel inconsistent, as the writers seem to exaggerate her nagging, overbearing traits for comedic effect rather than developing her as a coherent, complex character.
I love this realization Debra has that she grew up in a more sophisticated household whereas the Barones are less classy, but more hands on and warm. Even though she hated to admit it, Lois seems completely uninterested to be there and Marie loves to be there for everyone
Lois didn't think she was better than everybody else. She just wasn't the most natural when it came to the traditional mother role or was very aware around her surroundings. She showed her love for both of her daughters by taking them traveling around the world or to museums. As Debra pointed out in the end they still did lot together and Lois does admit in the end of the episode that she is glad that she is staying with them since it allows her to see how great of a mom Debra really is.
Doris Roberts was SO GOOD at acting without saying a word. You can see exactly what’s going through her head through her facial expressions and body language alone. Peter Boyle was also skilled at that-the scene where Frank and Marie sit at the breakfast table and perfectly respond to each other all without speaking is a masterclass in acting. Two truly phenomenal performers! :)
Marie, Frank and Robert invaded this dinner without being invited, Ray said nothing. Then he behaved like a 5-year-old without a brain... that's too much cowardice even for Ray's standards.
Plus while everyone is eating their food , Marie is running around after the children when does Marie get to enjoy her meal in peace? I can't help noticing that there was no place for her at the table with Ray and Debra or an extra plate of food in the kitchen

Debra really wanted two maids because she should be the one tending to her kids so Marie can enjoy herself too. The first words coming out of her mouth is for her mom to help her with the house/kids. Debra after the kids went to school what did she do? Always making her lemon chicken which never got any better lol And then demanding Ray who works to spend more time with her.
I was on Debra’s side when the show started and I was young. Now that I’m older, I found Debra to be the worst. She’s utterly ungrateful for Marie and wants her mom’s vacation to be centered around her.
