That is not a bad thing. Even Jackie Chan is the same character on every movie. The whole point of these actors is not the character its the actor. When i see a jason statham movie i go "oh shit its jason statham in this, i dont go oh its frank" At the end of the day, these actors are better in my eyes because they know their range and use it. Jason knows what kind of character to play, the cool collected professional guy. If i want to see a jason statham movie, thats what i expect to see, a professional dude do cool shit in the screen. When i see a jackie chan movie i expect a funny chinese guy do parkour and kick some ass. These movies are fun and calming. Not every movie needs to be bundled with a 1hr essay trying to decuce whatever the fuck happened and how it talks about the socio-political status of the world. People have enough problems in their lives
My dear man, did you see that last Police story? Damn, Jackie showed there, that he can act in my opinion! Not fun movie at all and i believed it! Your coment is fair, im just saying, dont underestimate my man Jackie!
That's why I love Hobbs and Shawn movie: filmmakers basically said "yes, our heroes can't defeat Idris Elba on their own, BUT if we bring Rock, Statham, Reynolds and Hart with the power of onesideness.."
Dwayne Johnson also had no range but I would still watch Jason Statham movies all day becauses he executes his limited range perfectly. He's like a shotgun, you won't take it into combat but it's still a great weapon.
@@mangopie7602 Real life shotguns have more range than what video games show, just with buckshots you can go hunting buck sin the forest (hence the name)
Jason Statham constantly has the annoyed look of someone forgetting his keys in the house, who is now berating himself in his head while waiting for the locksmith (he thought about breaking a window, but didn't do it).
Excellent. A friend of mine developed the theory that Statham is actually one big muscle. That´s why his range is so restricted. Try making a face with just one muscle. Just saying...
With Jason Statham you just cant go wrong. Youre exactly gonna know what kind of movie you can expect. Will it be remembered? No, does it strive for greatness? No, but it sure as hell entertains for 90 minutes til it leaves your memory forever.
For the longest time I have been blinded by my hatred for the rock and Ryan Reynolds that I completely forgot Jason Statham exists. The only difference between him and them is I actually enjoy his derivative and repetitive performances because most of his movies are actually entertaining. I could easily rewatch any of his movies
But why would you hate them LOL? Though I should be the last person to tell you this. I myself hate Taika Waititi and James Gunn...though I don't have an actor that I particularly hate 'cause I feel directors are more influential than actors. I've noticed the same actor acting differently under the direction of different directors.
@ I’m sharing your hate for Taika Waititi, personally I think James Gunn was good in first Guardians of Galaxy. I agree with you about directors being more influential. My hate is about roles; Ryan chooses roles that don’t reflect his nature, he’s an asshole deep inside, and he should play villains or morally unstable people, anti-heroes at last.
That would be Steven Seagal. He brought down the entire SNL episode he was on. There was one sketch with Hans and Frans, and he was like "If I do this sketch...IF...I have to beat them up." Like he couldn't even do a joke on a comedy show without endangering ravenous maw of insecurity he calls a personality.
Yup, already getting ready to watch it with excitement although I practically KNOW everything I'm in for cause I've watched every Jason Statham movie at least twice.😂😂😂 It's a paradox but it never gets old. 😂 My teen sister has a really big crush on him.
As an IT consultant, The Beekeeper is the more accurate depiction of modern cyberhacking/scams to date. I constantly find people in the exact same situation as the woman at the beginning. I always tell them to go watch this movie.
The Beekeeper was entertaining, which is the point of film, but there were no stakes. I knew Jason Statham was going to win and he was never really in any peril. At least in most of his films, there is some peril, we think he might die and sometimes he does. I didn't have that fear in The Beekeeper... but to be honest he was killing cyberscammers, so... fuck those guys.
You don't need to have range to do action movies that's not the point. Criticizing action stars for the lack of range is the same as criticizing french fries for not being french. It's doesn't matter. That's the same with every other action star. If I'm going to watch Transporter I don't expect absolute cinema, I expect to see Jason Statham kick ass.
French fries can be curly, spicy, cheesy, plain, salty, mayo, ketchup etc. these action stars are not even trying. They could at least show any other emotion other than irritation 😂😂
@@Docmatema And how is that any different than action stars playing essentially the same character types in different situations? You can put whatever you want on it but at the end of the day, they're still just fried potatoes, and they taste like fried potatoes. If you hate fried potatoes, you're not gonna like it no matter how they prepared it
Wholeheartedly disagree. The movie has to conform to their only emotion and ruins any chance for depth. It’s shallow and lazy. Why do you think 5th element was amazing? His character had some range and so did the actor.
The fact that I prefer Statham's method to show you all the variations of that one expression to someone inventing a look and hanging their hat on that one look forever. *vine boom*
"...with occasional forays into black suits for formal frowning," and the Swiss watch comparison both demonstrate how much your writing is getting sharper. Keep it up, your writing is delightful.
When you do ONE specific thing well, why change the recipe? We as the audience know EXACTLY what we're getting with guys like Statham, The Rock, Vin Diesel just like we did back in the day with Jackie Chan, Jean Claude Van Damme, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. Some actors do something well and I'm all for it. I personally think Crank and Crank 2 are some of the most ridiculous but fun action movies around and I would happily watch another.
My problem the rock is he's just to damn big I mean look at San Andreas he's supposed be a coast guard guy that just seems overkill Statham is fit enough to be believable in his role another example is skyscraper who's buying that this big ass dude jumping 20 feet onto a building I mean it was still good but he kinda takes me out of it
I was having this convo with my fiancee when we went to watch the Beekeeper. You know what youre getting out of Jason Statham but it makes for a fun watch everytime
I mean... it's just an efficient version of Bruce Willis, Keanu Reeves, or Clint Eastwood. The implication of stoicism is that the world never changes, and therefore the individual never changes. Stephen King's "same shit, different day" becomes "different day, same expression". Fallout's "war never changes" becomes "Jason Statham's face never changes".
Guy Ritchie seemed to figure out how to get the best out of Statham’s lack of range in Wrath Of Man, where his lack of detectable emotion was made an actual plot point and the theme of the story. Since we couldn’t tell what the protagonist truly cared about until the story’s conclusion, I thought that was some very skilful writing for a movie that had some genuine high points. He did go up in my estimation when he appeared in that Mellisa McCarthy vehicle and showed us he could laugh at himself and, more particularly, his own image, with some genuine lol moments for me. I do love your writing. “Occasionally wearing a suit for formal frowning,” made me lol, among several other zingers. P.S. That final line you delivered, so beautifully dryly, kept me chuckling to myself like an idiot for minutes. I’m still smiling as I write this. Thank you for being so entertaining.
I can't see Jason Statham playing other roles besides action heroes, great video btw. But why did you delete your "Forrest Gump Jenny Curran villain" video? Would've been nice to have it available and just turn off the comments section.
Staham and Rock are always playing themselves. Generally most action stars play themselves and they succeed in it. Even great Chuck Norris, Van Damme, etc play themselves.
That's why they are action stars and not character actors. People enjoy them for who they are and not who they should become for the role. That's why most people will go watch San Andreas 'cause it's a Rock movie but the Pirates of the Caribbean movies for Jack Sparrow.
at around 5:08 you used "really" instead of "very". it might be an example of artistic expression, although such would be unwelcome in the rigid structure of an analytical piece
He's character in The Spy was hilarious...he was making fun of the "character" he plays in most of his other movies. Meaning he does not have a big ego like the Rock ,Steven Seagal or Vin Diesel
Statham isn't what I'd call an 'actor', rather he's an 'entertainer'. He's not here to play deep, thought-provoking roles where he seems like a completely different person. Statham's here to look mildly irritated at nothing in particular and kick ass while doing so. And that's perfectly okay. My brother and I watched The Meg 2 and had a fucking blast. Because Statham was playing a perpetually annoyed monster shark-slayer and that shit was cool as hell.
I enjoy watching Jason. He feels like a recurring character whom you can always rely on to do a serious stoic role. But the fact that he can also use that too make it serious in some and funny in some movies. Which is why his role as a Schizo Goalkeeper in that one football movie will be my favourite.
he is one of the few examples of "he only needs to do one thing, and it works". If he does anything else it would feel wrong, and with his mma skills most of his action films are still very entertaining to watch. If you haven't seen Crank and Crank 2, (and are old enough) go watch them. also, all of the footage he shows while talking about Crank, is not Crank. so in this example the video misrepresents the films. The video also fails to mention that although he is very similar in most of his films, Transporter 1,2, Crank 1,2, Snatch, Death Race, and Safe are all actually good films.
I got into an argument with a friend recently who was trying to convince me that the transporter was a better movie than John Wick. It was a hard argument for me to make, mostly because I couldn't stop laughing.
Jason Statham was born in 1967. Upon realizing he was born in England, he became annoyed and remained that way for the rest of his natural life. From then on, every time Jason Statham gets angry, it rains... in hell. When Jason Statham makes an action movie where he needs to look annoyed, they simply film him, and nature makes it so. The only reason the sun rises each day is because Jason Statham became annoyed in his sleep, and the density of his annoyance causes a gravitational rotation allowing the earth to continue to spin. The only reason that you're alive right now is because you haven't annoyed Jason Statham yet. Jason Statham goes through four to five cameras a day because the pressure of his stare turns them into diamonds which he uses to fund his quest to cure male pattern baldness. Jason Statham cannot be cloned because that would require the singularity of a black hole. Jason Statham doesn't have sex. When he gets annoyed, a baby appears on his doorstep that he's annoyed he has to care for. Earthquakes are simply the earth cracking under the stress of Jason Statham's footsteps. Whenever you're having an annoying day, think about Jason Statham because he's certainly more annoyed than you. Jason Statham Jason Statham Jason Statham. Jason Statham Jason Statham Jason Statham. Jason Statham. Jason Statham: Jason Statham
This was the original form of Hollywood acting-the character actor. When you go into a movie and see Statham you INSTANTLY understand who the character js and what his likely motivations and skills are. Its movie shorthand so directors dont need to waste lots of time establishing the character. It also mean prosepectice audiences can tell exactly what movie theyd watch if they go to a Statham movie.
I really want to see a video on Sylvester Stallone. For a guy that feels like he has the least range of anyone you ever made a video on, the guy's a surprisingly great actor even when he's kinda phoning it in
Jason Statham is a condiment. You put him in you movie for specific flavour. Richard E Grant makes this joke about his own roles. Applies to lots of actors but Statham’s commitment to his own brand is a thing to behold.
Jason Statham briefly experimented with hair in Guy Ritchie's 2005 film, "Revolver" only to forgo this addition in all future roles as the shifting landscape of Hollywood producers shifted to exclusively preferring the casting of bald or balding musclemen. Statham, a gentleman notoriously dedicated to the craft of acting, possessing a profound understanding of auteurism, has been actively willing his hairline into recession over the past two decades to the point of becoming one of Hollywood's leading disco balls, a status shared with fellow Hobbs & Shaw co-star, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. While starring predominantly in American productions since the mid 2000's, Statham has obdurately maintained his steely East London brogue, following in the footsteps of fellow Londoner diaspora and Gnomeo & Juliet co-star, Sir Michael Caine. His dedication is ostensibly, unmatched.
Jason Statham is like the Jason Statham of looking annoyed. He's the the role not just the person. He is Jason Statham and when you hire him you might as well make your character Jason Statham. Clinical precision at being not happy with the world around him. Exactly what a Jason Statham movie needs.
"If you find one note you like, you might as well play it until the piano breaks, then stare at the broken piano with deep disapproval while somehow making it explode." Wise words.
My friends and I did a "Jason Statham month" where we watched a Jason movie every day for a month. Was genuinely mind-numbing. A handful of amazing movies but 70% of it felt like I was watching the same movie over and over again.
The way I see it... Jason is just a "tool", a perfect one. Sometimes, you don't need a sophiscated, thought provoking character to carry your story, especially in action, thriller genre. It is the ability for the writter to create the perfect action packed plot, without demolishing any stake nor risk. Shifting away from any unnecessary conventional drama or mostly theatrical act and just went big-kaboom! Anyone play Just Cause 3?

While I do agree with you with most of them. I can absolutely recognize the Crank movies.
Causing fashion critics to scramble for their thesaurus is a great line
it's especially nice because of the pause... as if looking for a thesaurus.
That is not a bad thing. Even Jackie Chan is the same character on every movie. The whole point of these actors is not the character its the actor. When i see a jason statham movie i go "oh shit its jason statham in this, i dont go oh its frank"
At the end of the day, these actors are better in my eyes because they know their range and use it.
Exactly, actors like Jason Statham are like fast-food restaurants. One doesn't expect KFC to have Michelin-level service or (healthy) food.
But Jackie Chan has stated he wants different types of roles and movies, not just Rush Hour sequels. He wants to do a romcom.
I concur
@@AshrafAnam Gorgeous was conceived as a Jackie Chan romcom movie, although the end result leans much more into action than rom or com.

You could've said "He's like a shotgun, limited range but damn effective"
@@mangopie7602 Real life shotguns have more range than what video games show, just with buckshots you can go hunting buck sin the forest (hence the name)
Jason Statham constantly has the annoyed look of someone forgetting his keys in the house, who is now berating himself in his head while waiting for the locksmith (he thought about breaking a window, but didn't do it).
The thumbnail is evil 💀

Excellent. A friend of mine developed the theory that Statham is actually one big muscle. That´s why his range is so restricted. Try making a face with just one muscle. Just saying...
"With the masterful precision of a swiss watch that only tells one time" is a line i'll echo into eternity
With Jason Statham you just cant go wrong. Youre exactly gonna know what kind of movie you can expect. Will it be remembered? No, does it strive for greatness? No, but it sure as hell entertains for 90 minutes til it leaves your memory forever.
I want Crank 3
For the longest time I have been blinded by my hatred for the rock and Ryan Reynolds that I completely forgot Jason Statham exists. The only difference between him and them is I actually enjoy his derivative and repetitive performances because most of his movies are actually entertaining. I could easily rewatch any of his movies
I understand the Rock hate but ryan Reynolds😔
why do u not like Ryan Reynolds? 😭
@@Whit3Eyes he’s utterly fake from head to toes. Deadpool character explores this, it’s his “Monster”.
I wonder, if there are actors with actual negative range: So bad, even good actors get nerfed by their sheer presence....
Well, these are just actors that are bad at their craft, meaning theyre either learning, or never taken up for any roles.
These are almost exclusively found in the horror genre
There is a director that can do that - m night shyamalan
That's Jared Leto
That would be Steven Seagal. He brought down the entire SNL episode he was on. There was one sketch with Hans and Frans, and he was like "If I do this sketch...IF...I have to beat them up." Like he couldn't even do a joke on a comedy show without endangering ravenous maw of insecurity he calls a personality.
He sure is instantly recognizable. And painfully predictable.
As they say in my country, people who cant do...criticize
Ironically, his best acting performance is from movie London imho, where he became pretty emotional. It's not an action movie
Yeah nah have you watched Snatch? Best Statham movie
Painfully?
you dont know what youre talking about be honest
Jason Statham is really good at playing Jason Statham.
Probably from the 50+ years of continuous practice. That's dedication.
He‘s like McDonalds. You know what you get. Not any positive surprises but no disappointment either.
The Beekeeper was pretty good ngl
I agree brother
I thank that movie for teaching me to be extremely paranoid about buying stuff online.
Yup, already getting ready to watch it with excitement although I practically KNOW everything I'm in for cause I've watched every Jason Statham movie at least twice.😂😂😂
It's a paradox but it never gets old. 😂
My teen sister has a really big crush on him.
Jason Statham has such a charisma that he don't need a range. He is a range.
@@Docmatema i like potatoes over french fries.
To be fair, when I am watching a Jason Statham movie, I am not looking for an Oscar-worthy plot or acting.
False. He absolutely has range that varies between "Jason Statham" and "Jason Statham dancing in a speedo."
Deep cuts! For anyone interested, look up "Shamen - Coming On"
Nice. Love a good callback
The fact that I prefer Statham's method to show you all the variations of that one expression to someone inventing a look and hanging their hat on that one look forever.

"...with occasional forays into black suits for formal frowning," and the Swiss watch comparison both demonstrate how much your writing is getting sharper. Keep it up, your writing is delightful.
Somehow still the coolest actor ever. His IG page is nuts
2:10 the way he stutters bro i'm dead 💀💀💀🗣🗣🗣🥶🥶🥶
This is my favorite series on TH-cam. Never stop, please.

I went to see the latest Jason Statham movie and I was glued to my seat. Otherwise I woulda left.
Love how the video just started looping halfway through. Really kept my attention
I mean... it's just an efficient version of Bruce Willis, Keanu Reeves, or Clint Eastwood.
I don't understand how some people enjoy his movies. You watch one, you've watched them all.
”A cement mixer having a secret” is true poetry; like Homer in Greek. Kudos for a well crafted video, my good man.
I can't see Jason Statham playing other roles besides action heroes, great video btw. But why did you delete your "Forrest Gump Jenny Curran villain" video? Would've been nice to have it available and just turn off the comments section.
Watch Snatch man, funniest movie in existence
"With the precision of a Swiss watch that only tells one time" This is amazing. 😆
lmao this is fantastic lmao. I love most of his work though- its all a nonsense filled acid trip, with one actor who just KEEPS GETTING ISSEKAIED lmao
Staham and Rock are always playing themselves. Generally most action stars play themselves and they succeed in it. Even great Chuck Norris, Van Damme, etc play themselves.
You dont know them to say "their playing themselves" thats a weird negative in film criticism. Again, you dont know him lol
I can't tell if this is irony, or if you're actually critiquing the video as though it is a serious analysis worthy of grammatical corrections

I like how you had to say if you're old enough😭

Pretty funny to talk about how he does the same thing in every role & then start repeating all the clips that've already been shown 😂
Jason Statham was born in 1967.
