I didn't know there was a term for dusting straight hair! When I dust my, or my family's, curly hair - the process is definitely different! Thanks for posting, I'm not a hair professional but I love learning as much as I can about it!!
Jessika Gutierrez it’s why I switched hair stylists because I have curly hair that grows slow and I asked for a trim once and my curly hair was till the bottom of my ears and before it was at my collar bones
I love this technique! I hate when stylists make fun of people because they want to keep their hair long... they expect us just to chop 4 inches off for split ends and be fine
a basketboy I’ve had 2-3 different stylists tell me that I need to cut 4 inches off my hair and When I only want to do 1-5 inches they would laugh and tell me my hair will never be healthy... it’s so rude and I only had medium length hair... sorry I don’t want hair to my damn shoulders 🤦🏻♀️
Elizabeth Ann Beauty Agree! Not sure why some stylists get seriously bothered if you don't want hair up to the damn shoulders or chin. I trim my own hair now because stylist today have shit attitudes and believe they know it all.. Not all stylists are like this I know, but enough to turn me against going to salons.
your stylists are right. you need to cut off your dead ends/split ends but you wanting to preserve your long hair is also preserving your split ends. they laugh at you because it makes no sense to choose length over health
most hairdressers I've gone to are very professional. I always go in like "I'm growing my hair out, but chop of whatever you think I should chop of" and they never get carried away. Some times they cut a little, sometimes they cut more(that depends on my hair's health), but they never cut more than 1,5 to 2 cm which is really not that much considering I don't visit the salon as often as I should. If your hairdresser suggests cutting 4 inches(which is like 10 cm), then you should probably take their advice. Especially if more than one suggests it. Your hair is probably damaged and would look way better if you chop of a bit more. Then you could do smaller trims in the future. Shorter healthier hair always look better than long ragged hair. If you go to the hairdresser a bit more often, then you won't have to do these big chops. Hair on average will grow 1 cm a month. So if you go every 3 months(for example), the hairdresser will only need to cut like 1cm max. Which will leave you those 2 centineters.
I always go to the hairdresser when my hair is really long and i tell them i want it cut to my shoulders because i find very long quite annoying and they look ao shocked and say why would you wanna cut all that off. They actually tell me it would be too short and i should keep it a bit below my shoulders
How do you do it on your own hair? I really want to do this at least once before I cut off like 10-15cm. I have sooo much split ends but also split middles and split all-lengths lol.
I’ve tried dusting and not all of the damaged ends stick up or out. I’ve held it the way the stylist did and I tried twisting my hair. So instead, I just take 5-10 mins every day to go through my hair and cut away any split ends I find.
You must have long hair, which enables you to do this. My hair is an inch below shoulder length but it’s not long enough to be able to cut those split ends off. I can’t see them. Anyways, I just had to jump on the split end comment bandwagon and make a comment. 😄
I still trim the very ends as shown in the video every 6 weeks, that's when I also dust. It's to the very end of my back and want it to about half my butt. The trimming helps the overall health and thickness of ends for a cleaner fuller look
That is why I fired the salon, I have my husband trim my ends every other month, basically a dusting and even up the ends. My hair grew from collarbone length down past my elbows. The salon stylists always cut off too much when I said I wanted to grow my hair longer. I don’t waste my money paying someone to sabotage my efforts to grow out my hair. I get compliments on my hair and requests to borrow my stylist.
Ada Kair i would imagine that its not much, as it is done fairly quickly on dry hair. Call your preferred salon and ask about their pricing, if it isn’t affordable for you, you can look up some simple at home dusting tutorials and get yourself some hair scissors.
It works if its done right. The lady did it too carelessly in the video. Better way is to take a section of the hair and twist it tightly and trim off only the split ends that stick out from the twisted hair. And short hair doesnt cause split ends, its caused by lack of care to the hair
Dusting is great. It's such a good way to get rid of a lot of breakage and brittle parts that naturally happen all along the hair shaft. You can do it at home, but it's harder because you can't see as well so ask a friend if you can. Also you can twist the hair completely and gently run your finger up the section of hair to bring out the end bits and trim those. I just did twist dusting yesterday and also trimmed the ends as well as point cutting so it wasn't as blunt. I also bought barber scissors, a cheap pair, but still better than say kitchen scissors and it worked great. When you get all that damage mostly off, your hair looks and feels so much better. You think it's not noticeable, but damaged hair creates a dull, unruly look that is subtle, but still there. My partner, who doesn't always notice subtle things commented that my hair looks much better and I lost only a few centimeters to take the worst of the breakage off. I also gave myself long side bangs too. If you mess up when cutting your own hair, before running to a barber to fix it, try point cutting blunt ends. Sometimes that can make a world of difference, Also always remember to take less off than you think you need. You can always cut more, but you can't undo cutting too much.
I bleach and dye my hair, which are synonyms for "severely damaged hair". But I started doing both techniques and my hair has recovered a lot. I also use hair treatments and masks to keep it hydrated and healthy, they also help. But it works tbh. At least for me. Should've been nice to see this but in curly hair!
I try to do both. So the already broken ends don't break higher up and have a chance to grow, while fixing the ends and evening it out. Makes a huge difference
They pretend not to know to get you in and out of there faster it’s always been around it’s something they have to learn before graduating hair school 🥰 not trying to be mean just don’t let them trick you
Trim has the best work/result ratio and is the best for blunt cut. Dusting would be good if you have a lot of layers but you should trim the bottom anyway bc the ends get way more damage.
I guess it depends of what you want. If you want to grow your hair longer and don't want to lose length, go for dusting, if you want to keep your hair at a similar length, go for trimming. Or do a trim every few months and dusting each month to prevent damage and still have your hair grow long rather fast. That's only what I think, I'm sure some people will have a different opinion, but that's what I like to choose when I wanna grow my hair.
Honestly I would do both. I would trim off 2 inches of my hair and then twist pieces of my hair and dust it off. When you dust it off you only cut some of the strands that stick out that are splitted and its as if your not cutting that much. You dont have to cut off 2 inches of course but I would personally. My hair grows rather fast when taken care of properly and it's long. I suggest oiling. And when untangling your hair act like your hair is gold to cause less breakage. Sorry for the long comment. Hope this helps.🙂
That's why when you are ready for a touch up at the salon wait one more month because trimming exactly one inch usually isn't possible for most people. So if you usually go every 2 months extend it to 3 and so on.
oiling hair and doing masks with oil will repair split ends! i promise. I used to get split ends often and would trim my hair every few months. I've been oiling for about 6 months and I don't have a single split end... my hair had been chemically botched . routinley oiling my hair has made the strands thick and healthy whereas before taking care of my hair, it had felt like straw at the ends. i think there are a few factors that play into split ends, like the products someone uses. i think harsh chemicals in shampoos and conditioners can cause split ends because they strip the hair of its natural oils, making it dry. using shampoos withOUT stuff like Sulfates and Parabens will help too. oiling is amazing for the hair. Oiling 1-2 times a week will do the trick.
123 what product did u use for ur hair. My hair used to be very healthy and thick and now my strands are all dead and breaking. The pieces are also like crinkly idk if that makes sense but my hair is very damaged and I haven’t done anything to it (no dyes, gel etc) it can prob just be my shampoo I use tresseme
Michele try to use sulphate free shampoo and conditioner. You could also try Rosewater as a mask for your hair. And airdry your Hair as often as you can.
UMMMM OK I was just trimming my hair like 5mins ago (which I never do and have never looked up vids/googled how to do it) and this just popped up on my homepage. IM ACTUALLY FREAKING OUT WTF
Been a hairdresser I would NEVER brush wet hair EVER as when hair is wet it breaks more easily so brushing causes more damage. gently use a detangling comb...
Want to grow your hair long? Here is the biggest secret: trimming your hair, or even dusting, will create frail ends that split quicker. Do not cut it for the sake of cutting split ends. Deep condition your hair every now and then. Dont use hair styling products. Do not use heating tools. Over time, your hair quality wil improve. Stylists always cut off too much. I stopped seeing them all together, as I was sick of hair cuts that looked okay from the shop mirror, but upon seeing it at home, it was a disaster. It takes a long time, but start eating healthy and keep yourself hydrated. Good hair begins on the inside, just as skin and nails.
@a basketboy i trimmed it once so far myself to even out the previous hair stylists' intentional uneven short cut. After that last professional cut, I discovered it was longer in the front and shorter in the back the hard way: after she chopped off so much, I could not put it up in a hairtie. She had cut off the top layers very short. The longest layer was barely past my ear. I wear glasses. I was asked to remove them, as they do to everyone who wears glasses. I cannot see without them. I did not know she cut such short layers on top til it was too late. The cut itself would be considered cute by some, a disaster by others, but definetely not what I asked for. I bit my tongue, paid, tipped and left. I let it grow out for a long time. When it was shoulder length, I trimmed it myself. Why I waited so long? I didnt want to be displeased and then cut more. It is bun-able length, so i rocked it for a couple of years. Then did the trim to fix the uneven growth. After the last pro cut during the first 6 months or so that time of not cutting it, I started to have split ends. I ignored them. Over time, they disappeared. I cut my hair about a year ago from now just to even it out. I cut with kitchen scissors. That is all I had. Some split ends formed a few weeks, and after a month or so, disappeared again. I no longer have split ends. I only use shampoo and conditioner, or skip the conditioner and use leave-in conditioner. I wash my hair every 2-3 days. It gets a bit greasy, but that is expected. It is down to my bra strap/armpit now. Ive been practicing this minimalist routine for a few years now. And my hair doesnt have split ends. It was totally accidental. I never bothered split hair prevention until I discovered cutting hair is what causes it, at least for me.
@a basketboyYou are very welcome. Goodness, i know. You know what the last hairdresser said when she cut it? "Oh, it will grow back." Out of years of my childhood and teenagehood, even adulthood listening to other peoples advice (cut it often and it will grow longer quicker... and more beautiful...).. I finally learned the truth. Every single hairdresser I have ever came into contact with, except once because it was strictly for a cool style for taking pics, has cut it too short. I have cut my own hair maybe 10 times in my life, and I could never understand why it always looked better than someone else with training has cut it... kitchen scissors maybe? Lol Im 29 now, and am finally growing out my hair long for the first proper time. Better late than never.. it feels like it is taking forever.. but once it got past the shoulders, time passes quickly.
@a basketboy You are so sweet :) I may do that sometime. I do plan on growing it out as long as possible, and when it is long to my liking, I have considered shaving the sides and back, leaving long hair only in the center top. Youre right, one is never too old to have long hair. One must also always remain young at heart no matter how much time goes. ♡
The thing I've never understood about dusting, is are all those shorter hairs actually split? Or are some of them perfectly healthy and just haven't reached the length of the rest of your hair yet?
Breakage from hair ties and stuff I think. Mid-length breakage is common from that. I'm gonna start loosely braiding my hair at night cuz it's supposed to help from night breakage which allegedly accounts for 70% of damage
I'm a complete amateur but I feel like dusting is good for if you still want to grow out your hair length while trimming is more for people who want to keep the same length. My family used to trim their hair every year and I couldn't help but think "It took you a whole year to even grow out that inch!" Anyway, I've been slowly dusting at home and carefully targeting only split ends and leaving alone healthy ends.. It takes forever but I've got time in quarantine lol. Only thing that sucks is I can't trim where I can't see.
Very slight trimming is important unless you want the ends to become thin and frayed looking. It makes such a difference but I only take the slightest bit off every 6 weeks
Wow she has a lot of hair. The thickness of my hair is literally a quarter of hers. Maybe less. Unfortunately her split ends are throughout her hair, not just the ends.
I know excessive split ends don’t look good, but it looks so weird to me when people have straight across cuts with no visible split ends. I really don’t like it, it looks boxy and weird.
Yes, the boxed cut looks very unnatural, but hair stylists don't seem to care about that. It took me 3 years to grow out of a box blunt cut. I hated it so much.
I trim and dust my hair since 3 years ago. My hair grew from a bit below bra strap (aka mid-back) to almost tailbone (calling it on x-mas. Tbl means the *ahmz!* almost there where the butt c*ack is)
I like her. She’s not like other scissor happy stylist . This is how you give a dusting. But stylist will cut inches off when you ask them to remove split ends
If you're trying to keep the length of your hair never cut the hair when it's wet it will shrink and be shorter than what it was to begin. Cut it when it's dry
Hi Angelina, we recommend using our salon locator on hair.com to find a salon near you. There you can learn more about the best technique used to achieve your desired style.😃
Ceyda Tham No. Leaving split ends will thin your hair out more - they’ll split to the root and you’ll have two fine hairs coming out of one hair follicle.... no fun! Very prone to breakage anyways so it’s best to cut it before it gets to the scalp.
Then another technique that is often used to remove split ends is a full headshave! That way there’s no split ends to worry about and your head will be happier and healthier! Just add a bit of sunscreen before stepping out into the sunshine🙂
Can someone explain to me how this helps breakage, NOT split ends? If the hair has breakage the whole strand of hair is shorter than your length, how does cutting it help? Don't you just end up with an even shorter strand of hair that will stick out and look frizzy just like it did before just at a shorter length? My daughter has very curly hair and it's very long, I don't want her to lose her length but I'm not sure what to do about it. She has a lot of breakage, my fault for not getting trims enough but trying to figure out where to go from here. Any help appreciated!
Great question Amy! You're right that there’s no miracle way to fuse your ends back together, but there are plenty of strategies for minimizing damage to your hair in the future. This is more about prevention help!
This is hard to do when every hair is a split end, my hair looks horrible, and I don't know what to do about it! I've went to the salon but nothing helps! Can y'all help me and give me tips? I'd appreciate y'all's help!! 😔😔
Should every hair stylist know how to do dusting?? I've been looking for a better fix for split ends for years and I'm surprised to only be hearing about this technique now... does dusting thin out the hair a lot?
Yes, mosts stylists should all know how to do dusting! We recommend making a consultation with your regular stylist to ask them more about how this would work for your hair!
I always cut my own hair. Is doing a dusting possible if you can't actually look directly at the strands? My hair isn't long enough to pull it around to the front, but I'm wondering if just moving this scissors along the hair group (doing it by feel) in the hopes of catching the short ones, would work? Seems to me there's no reason it shouldn't work, as it's a very tactile technique, but I don't want to do anything that would be a complete disaster 😁
Hi Linda! Great question, we recommend visiting our website hair.com and using our salon locator to find one of our expert stylists in your area! They would be happy to help you.😃
I've been getting dusting at Rapunzel's Salon in Columbus, Ohio for years. It really does work! I believe Dave Barrett's mentor George Michael may have coin the term "dusting". This technique is a little different though.
Was going to go to the Beauty Shop to get my hair done. Mom decided where going to do our hair from home. Going to moms Friday to get our hair done. To many people getting sick here with Covid here in town. So staying home as much as possible. My hair is so long just going to get trimmed. Will be a fun afternoon. ❤️👼 I can only trim my own bangs not good at doing the rest.😁😁 Beauticions run in our family. Don't think I've ever seen the Dusting style cut.
I'm not a stylist, but when she combed her hair at the end I still see the split ends as she combed it down?? Thought it was removing it? I was always told my hair had to be cut more than an inch and periodically trimmed to get rid of the split ends...just wondering?? And I heard the music, not sure why others couldnt hear it
10 year old me always just wanting my split ends gone go to a salon only to accidentally end up w/ a bob cut😭😭😭 Now I can go in & say nah I just want my hair dusted 💁🏼♀️
Doesn't a trim miss shorter split ends? I have never heard of dusting. I am dealing with the same split ends at the top from when I had a stupid short haircut and I get frequent trims.

@The Lively Girl Aisha me too 😂🤣
I feel like dusting keeps too many strands at different lengths-never ending split end cycle tbh
all your hair is different lengt aside of the cut part, its normal. The only way to get rid of every split end and keep it same length is buzzcut
It's ok for a touch up if you have gotten a decent cut in the past 6 months. After a year definitely get a cut or trim.
it depends. if you have layers, you don't even know what a "cycle" is
also different parts of your hair grow at different rates

The trim should be been higher so that less dusting would be necessary

Oksana Kän right😔
I can hear it too
I've been doing this to my clients (who need it) for decades. Never had a name for it. It can take longer than a regular haircut.
So satisfying! Long hair does not always mean beautiful. HEALTHY hair = beautiful!
Agreed! 🥰
The only way to get rid of split ends is by cutting them of.
oiling hair and doing masks with oil will repair split ends!
@@user-er5fm6jn6q you are absolutely right, but oiling will only prevent your hair from splitting, it cannot repair already split hair.
Friesen Polina true boi
Can we just stop and be amazed at how gorgeous her hair is?! Like seriously gorgeous!
Since when do you have to remove a full inch when you trim hair? (Been a hairdresser gor 30 years)
Not satisfactory results I found . Is there any other way to get rid of extreme split end I have worst hair condition. Help me please
Hello! The best way to get of split ends to do a big chop. Read more about it here: www.hair.com/should-you-cut-split-ends.html
@@hair-dot-com I done it but after few days same condition become same
UMMMM OK I was just trimming my hair like 5mins ago (which I never do and have never looked up vids/googled how to do it) and this just popped up on my homepage. IM ACTUALLY FREAKING OUT WTF
I have never seen a hairdresser use the dusting technique. I don't think they offer it where I live. But I do it myself sometimes.
Now how do I do that in curly hair?
Glad I looked at the comments, thought my phone was messed up with no audio
What is this haircut called, does she have layers? I love it!!
Long face-framing layers!🤩💜
Nice to know about dusting. Really a time saver if I do it myself at home rather than cutting each split end I find individually.
We're so happy this was helpful to you!
I can't imagine going through tens of thousands of hairs looking for a split end to cut
@a basketboyYou are very welcome.
Lol
Im 29 now, and am finally growing out my hair long for the first proper time.
Yeah, I'm wondering about that, too.
I'm a complete amateur but I feel like dusting is good for if you still want to grow out your hair length while trimming is more for people who want to keep the same length.
My family used to trim their hair every year and I couldn't help but think "It took you a whole year to even grow out that inch!"
Anyway, I've been slowly dusting at home and carefully targeting only split ends and leaving alone healthy ends..
This video was an excellent example explaining the difference. Thank you sooo much for helping me understand.
That's so exciting to hear! We're so happy this was helpful to you🥰
Her smile is amazing
Why does TH-cam always know what I need. Is like someone watching me or sum
I know excessive split ends don’t look good, but it looks so weird to me when people have straight across cuts with no visible split ends. I really don’t like it, it looks boxy and weird.
U can always get the ends feathered for a more subtle edge
The ends can also be point cut for a softer look.
Yes, the boxed cut looks very unnatural, but hair stylists don't seem to care about that. It took me 3 years to grow out of a box blunt cut. I hated it so much.
Dear Jane that was your fault for not telling them exactly what you want, next time tell them you want wispy feathered ends, not straight ends
@squishy booty Did you not read what she said? Stylists don’t always do what you ask. Way to put somebody down for nothing.
And for years I thought I was just a dumb stoner doing that at home
I trim and dust my hair since 3 years ago. My hair grew from a bit below bra strap (aka mid-back) to almost tailbone (calling it on x-mas. Tbl means the *ahmz!* almost there where the butt c*ack is)
Kitana Kojima you are a dumb stoner
Becca that's completely unnecessary.
honestly girl, me too😂
@Megan Halcom how is she jealous
I like her. She’s not like other scissor happy stylist . This is how you give a dusting. But stylist will cut inches off when you ask them to remove split ends
Do standard hair places do this. Like a cost cutters?
I used to do the dusting technique on my hair without even knowing it was a real thing lol
Me too!!
She is a good stylist!!
We totally agree!
If you're trying to keep the length of your hair never cut the hair when it's wet it will shrink and be shorter than what it was to begin. Cut it when it's dry
yeah! only if I had hair that straight.. no matter how much I try a lot of split ends still remain in my wavy hair
Try brushing before hand.
whoaa she’s pretty and i love that blonde hair!
Do they do this at the salon 💇♀️?
Hi Angelina, we recommend using our salon locator on hair.com to find a salon near you. There you can learn more about the best technique used to achieve your desired style.😃
How can you see split ends when the hair is wet?
That has been what I do when I don't have anything to do since I was in grammar school
Very useful short and to the point thank you!
Could you have both dusting and trimming done? Or is that just redundant
It would make most sense to choose one or the other!
Doesn‘t it thin the hair out?
Ceyda Tham No. Leaving split ends will thin your hair out more - they’ll split to the root and you’ll have two fine hairs coming out of one hair follicle.... no fun! Very prone to breakage anyways so it’s best to cut it before it gets to the scalp.
Then another technique that is often used to remove split ends is a full headshave! That way there’s no split ends to worry about and your head will be happier and healthier! Just add a bit of sunscreen before stepping out into the sunshine🙂
We have a video about a fill head shave on our channel Fiona! Check it out 😊
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Omg the end result was fab 😸

What was that "PINK "spray that you used ?when you was cutting her hair? (Name and brand, and what it was for ?)
Cooking oil any one I've done for while and my haid no split ends taught I such share with all thanks
What was that spray of??
How do u do this for curly hair
So..no matter how I cut my ends,I end up having to cut more because I have very split ends..
Yup thats how i am
You bare such a burden
How will I do this by myself?
We do not suggest doing this by yourself, instead we recommend visiting a local stylist!
This is hard to do when every hair is a split end, my hair looks horrible, and I don't know what to do about it! I've went to the salon but nothing helps! Can y'all help me and give me tips? I'd appreciate y'all's help!! 😔😔
Use deep conditioning hydrating mask in place of your regular conditioner
Cut it off
sksksk my hair is about down to my hips and I have spilt ends ;( I’m getting a trim and am very scared!
i_Cheerio i wish my hair was down to my hips
Hannah Baker it took me soo long to grow it 😂 I’m 12 and since I was 4, I’ve only gotten clean ups (1 inch or 2)
Don’t be scared, it will ensure that your hair is healthy!
a basketboy Awesome actually. My hair is so healthy right now. Grown about 6 inches in 2 months!!
Becky with the good hair SNAPPED.
I do the same thing except I twist it in sections and trim off the fuzzy parts
You’re telling me that I’ve been “dusting” my hair this whole time!?!?!? Nice!
So a combo of both seems to be best
Happy to hear you're loving your results!
What about for curly hair...how do u dust
Great question! We would visit a stylist who specializes in curly hair and they will be able to help you out!
If someone wants to know the song in the background is The Sounds Of The Silent!
this girls face and hairstyle looks like what someones mom nowadays would have looked like back then in like a yearbook picture lmao hahah
OMG I also noticed that they both have kinda same face 😂
I trim my own hair but can never get the lowest layer of the back straight plz help
Where can I do this in nyc
I would like do dusting thank you very much
Is there any salon in ny that does this
This was done by Madison Sullivan who works at Dop Dop Salon in New York !
I want the stylist to do dusting for my hair but each person i go to always wants to cut off so much instead 😞
Thanks for explaining "dusting"!
I need too get this done so badly my hair is pretty badly damaged
That what I’ looking for. Direct to the point thank you
You can see the damage as she goes down the hair at the end. Still looks good and does keep length.
No audio...🙄
