  • Every detail of the Ford EcoBoost 1.5L Petrol Engine was articulated and refined, to show the level of engineering that Ford has introduced with this product - including the hydraulically activated variable valve system. Our CGI teams developed the combustion and gaseous effects, while Lighting and Rendering artists created photorealistic textures for each of the different metal, rubber, and plastic component. Ford deployed this animation at the Geneva Motor Show, online, and in Dealerships.

0:39 this is actually awesome! I would love to have the option of leaving the cylinder deactivated when accelerating as well, as it's basically an uneven firing 2 cylinder which should sound similar to a V-twin! 😍👌
There should be more uneven firing engines in small cars, as that's great for future car generations for providing awesome sound while being easy on the environment.

Well, yes and no.. As Harleys are sacrificial engines the second ignition at bdc produces that unique sound, you won't get that here because everything is shut down no fuel, no spark, no compression, it does resemble a 2 cyl Japanese bike, but only to the trained ear 👍

@@muaythai193 it's great in theory, of course it can't be a 2cyl under power that 3rd cyl would quickly become a hindrance. But I'm picking up what you are putting down. You do get the 270 sound at idle, but you have to put your head down by the exhaust 🤣. The real problem is like GDI at idle it screams (SEWING MACHINE!). It does respond to your right foot though, surprisingly so, you expect it to be docile, but it's ready to go. On the same vein on the interstate at 75mph it's spinning under 2k cyl deactivated up hill with 4 adults and luggage, and it's sipping champagne at 45mpg with its pinky up. It's a little mind blowing when you realize what it's doing. (I also wonder where the 2 banger cars are). If you follow the math (holy grail of displacement) we would be looking a a 1L, now Ford did tackle a 1L and it is basically the little brother to this 1.5 and it is winning award after award. Me, I'm a kawi 650 fan, I say let's do it!

@@christianfritz6333 same here I’d love to see it. 👍
Fiat has their 0.9 twinair engine, and all they gotta do is change the crank and all the ecu and timing stuff and we’d have a winner. 😂
Then of course there is the Honda Talon, if you can call that a “car”, which already has a 270 degree crank, awd and even dct.

@@muaythai193 I'm sure there are dozens more, not to mention the cars that have motorcycle conversions, I think the real demon is harmonics, no one cares about a bike engine at idle shaking like it's going to be jump out of the frame at any moment because in that power band they absolutely sing, (even the Harley, (I wonder what the dodo sounded like?)). But car engines HAVE to be smooth, you can balance a shilling on a running jag v12, blah blah.... So I don't see much hope for our beloved 270 or 180 Motors.

so to save pumping losses etc it stops valve operation on one cylinder, does it leave the valves slightly open? surely it doesnt leave inlet and exhaust valves closed? because then you are wasting power compressing air in that cylinder al the time?

What happens after miles of running in eco mode|? every compression stroke a small amount of that compressed air must pass the piston rings, so after 1000s of cycles, the pressure in the cylinder will drop to atmospheric pressure at TDC.
