The Last Rose Of Summer

  • André Rieu Live at the Point, Dublin, Ireland.
The Last Rose of Summer is a poem by Irish poet Thomas Moore, who was a friend of Byron and Shelley. Moore wrote it in 1805 while at Jenkinstown Park in County Kilkenny, Ireland. Sir John Stevenson set the poem to its beautiful melody and it was published in a collection of Moore's work called Irish Melodies (1807-34). It was made popular in the twenty first century in a recording by Charlotte Church and the Irish Tenors.
This melody was used extensively throughout Friedrich von Flotow's opera "Martha," first performed in 1847 in Vienna. According to the Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (1954), this opera was a remodelling from a ballet written in conjunction with Burgmuller and Deldevez and produced in Paris in 1844 as "Lady Henriette." It stands to reason, based on the evidence, that Flotow made liberal use of Stevenson's melody.
It is sung in the Musical group Celtic Woman by Méav Ní Mhaolchatha and Hayley Westenra

I love ' The Last Rose of Summer ' They do it so Well. My Wife and Daughter had the privilege of seeing Andre Rieu and His Orchestra in person in Allentown Pa a few years ago. Luckily my Daughter was a Volunteer at the PBS TV station that had Rieu here and she and my Wife got to meet him in person and had pictures taken with him.

I seen him in Dublin. The tickets for his concerts are unbelievable expensive in Ireland. The only reservation I would have is that he kept "milking" the audience at the end of the show for more encores...three in all (I think).

_I went to see André Rieu some years after this recording. Did I enjoy...yes and no...I didn't appreciate him "milking" the audience for more encores at the end of the concert._

I would have gone with my mother to a concert, but with flight, hotel and very high prices on the concert tickets, we cannot afford it. I think prices could be reduced.
When he has a private fortune on, was it 40milj $, owns and lives in a castle and can do exactly what he wants... so he could think that everyone is not as wealthy as he is ...
My mother used to play the violin, so it would for her sake, have been an experience, but, but...

Beautiful version of this song featuring the master flautist, Teun Ramaekerson on the whistle, with Andre and the JSO. It is like a duet, and so wonderful to hear -- and to see the smile on Teun's face after this performance. This gentleman truly is an artist with anything even resembling a flute and deserves all the admiration and accolades he receives. I feel sure our great violinist/conductor, Andre Rieu, is grateful for the many years of loyalty Teun has had toward him and is happy to share this marvelously gifted and skilled musician with us. Thank you, Andre.

'This the last rose of Summer,
    Left blooming all alone,
    All her lovely companions
    Are faded and gone.
    No flower of her kindred,
    No rose bud is nigh,
    To reflect back her blushes,
    Or give sigh for sigh."

"The Last Rose of Summer" is a poem by the Irish poet Thomas Moore. He wrote it in 1805, while staying at Jenkinstown Castle in County Kilkenny, Ireland. The poem is set to a traditional tune called "Aislean an Oigfear", or "The Young Man's Dream", which was transcribed by Edward Bunting in 1792, based on a performance by harper Denis Hempson (Donnchadh Ó hAmhsaigh) at the Belfast Harp Festival. The poem and the tune together were published in December 1813 in volume 5 of Thomas Moore's A Selection of Irish Melodies. The original piano accompaniment was by John Andrew Stevenson. Wikipedia
