When I had a huuuuge stress relationship in my life break down, I remember saying "oh look I'm growing curves" I was looking at my hips. That was 11 years ago. I believe that was the time the lipedema exploded. Extreme stress. Others may not think it was stressful, but for me it was.
I 100% agree with this. I have minor lymphedema. My main illness is myofascial pain syndrome. My doctors have told me that I must manage my stress. That is what is causing it. I definitely agree. For 6 months I was doing fantastic. I had a stressful December and a semi stressful February. Even though it was events that I was excited about, my anxiety was in overdrive. Now I'm in a flare up. It will literally take months to reduce this flare up. So frustrating.
Wow, the lipedema did happen after a very stressful event. My ex (now deceased) husband and I were in a flash flood at our very remote off-grid cabin and he was missing for a day and I was stranded. We both got through it, but I immediately experienced physical body changes that affected my legs and upper arms, and now I realize what this was. No one could explain why my legs changed so much. I’ve only recently been diagnosed, but the flood was in 2012. I just tied together the event and the lipedema. Thank you for explaining this!
I definitely see a difference with stress! Travel creates stress, too, but I am determined to continue exploring! Actually, I'm thinking anytime that my home routine is challenged, and I lose my focus, I see the change in my lipedema areas. This condition is really tough when you want to have a life! Lol
When the Body Says No is indeed a great book. Another one is The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel Van Der Kolk. I hope for a world in which medical science overcomes the capitalistic model of medicine, so that people's health is valued more than taking our money. Things are literally upside down at this point. Thank you for sharing your honest and relatable content. I am going to have a look at your website. ☮️
Hello Rebekah, great video. I do hope you you are happy 😊 in your current job and great to see your uploads every week ❤❤. For me I know when I am stressesd and anxious my swelling increases and my legs feel heavy.. Stress can manifest in so many ways, comfort eating, lack of sleep, lack of engery, migraine etc. We just have to be kind to ourselves and take each moment as it comes. Have a fabulous week ahead. 💋😘
Great information. I got so angry after an appointment a few weeks ago I was ready call her boss and drop out of the program. They operate under the title of a center for best health, and define it with working with a Dr, a dietitian, a psychologist, and exercise philologist, and I hoped it would be a great place for some realistic answers. The Dr. assigned to me is a nurse practitioner. Three times in our 2nd appointment she said, without conversation leading up to this “ you can’t just take one pill and loose ten lbs by tomorrow!” I’m 71. Duh. Insulted and offended, but didn’t let it show, still hoping she would have other info I would find helpful. I really don’t want the shots in the stomach or by-pass surgery. At this point I want to just leave and not return, but I wonder if it would be helpful TO ME to meet with the one Dr in the practice, to let him know why I’m leaving and advise him to train staff to stop fat shaming or find a new job! It likely won’t be helpful to him. Any thoughts? Thanks much. R
My Lipedema got worst with the stress. In that time I didn’t know that I have Lipedema. I was under constant stress probably for a year because of my job, I was depressed, stressed, didn’t eat much, didn’t move a lot just some walk outside. The stress took al over my life. It got to the point when my legs were too heavy and I have so much pain in my legs. Just walking cost me so much pain. In that time I realize that’s not normal. After that year I realized I gain a lot of weight, probably 2-3 sizes up. I was shocked. I didn’t understand my body. I didn’t eat much, because of the stress still I was gaining weight. Nothing made sense. After 6 moths I find out that there is something called Lipedema. And now it all make sense.
Another great video thank you ! I LOVE Gabor Mate , having run across his videos has been eye openers ….. I have both Lipedema and Lymphedema…. and as I was listening to this video I realized my Lipedema developed while taking care of my ex husband, who was chronically ill and mentally ill as well . I always wanted to get free but I literally could not bring myself to abandon him. There were other factors as well …. I always felt the lymphedema developed because I was always stuffing down my feelings of escape. He has been deceased now for 4 years , I naively thought my health would miraculously bounce back … it never has . I love audible as well so I will check out his book . Thank you again for your time .
Dr. Gabor Mate is the OG when it comes to healing childhood trauma, addiction and even ADHD. He’s my fav. Need to read this book - it has been on my wishlist for a while now. All podcasts where he’s the guest are like free therapy sessions honestly 😅 Lots of love for you, Rebecca. You’re the reason I learnt about Lipedema and my life has changed. Happy to be seeing you again. You take care and feel well ❤️
Hi from Australia. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I wish I could find a doctor here that would at least be open to a discussion about Lipedema. My physio believes I have it but I’ve visited 4 doctors and they don’t want to discuss it. I’m still searching though.
Do you have vein clinics in Australia? My lymphedema specialist works in a vein clinic, because they test you first for vein insufficiency. My Physician's assistant then set me up for manual drainage massage and compression stockings, even the compression machine. I'm sure she works with lipedema also. It really helps mentally to feel you have someone that hears you.
I can totally relate to everything you said and more. I had several stressful events in my life and thought well it's just life. Little I knew that those events were going to effect me long term. I discovered my illness just over two years ago due to an accident below my knees. Again at the time I just thought nothing of it but developed some massive bruises that took forever to go away. Anyway i often wondered whether stress can cause lipoedema or stress can help lipoedema flourish for those who do not show any signs of the illness. Anybody on here know the answer ?
Stress definitely holds our hand and walks us straight to comfort food. Even “Fluffy” says so: th-cam.com/video/188czZ9NRBI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=GNnkkAPOWSmtpmmC

I really want to enjoy this video without having to read the transcript but there is a tinny echo that is troublesome to my hearing.
I'm sorry to hear that @hrench71 - thanks for letting me know!
