    The Marvin Gaye version was all about the man's stellar vocals, The Funk Brothers notwithstanding. But the CCR version is all about the music, especially the full on version from the album. And of course John Fogarty's excellent singing.

      Smokey Robison & the Miracles did the original version ,Gladys Knight & the Pips recorded an up beat funky version that was released as a single first ,Marvin Gaye had the big pop soul hit & CCR did the definitive rock blues version . A top class song sung by top class artistes .

You guys have done a few of there songs already but lots left such as Proud Mary", "Lodi", "Green River", "Commotion", "Cotton Fields", "Midnight Special", "Travelin' Band", "Who'll Stop The Rain", "Up Around the Bend", "Run Through The Jungle", "Long As I Can See the Light", "Suzie Q", "I Put A Spell On You", "Sweet Hitch-Hiker" etc.

    Gladys Knight and the Pips first made this song famous (this song has an interesting history) even though they were the second group to record it. Marvin Gaye actually recorded his version just before Gladys Knight, but it wasn't released until a year after her version went number one on the R&B chart. I think this was in the late 60s. But Gaye's version was later hailed as a soul classic and i think it made Rolling Stone's 500 greatest songs of all time. Creedence released its rendition of the song in 1970--it was the longest version by far (something like 11 minutes long).

    • @sammybeck7794
      @sammybeck7794 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Berry Gordy actually shelved that song twice. Smokey Robinson and the Miracles recorded it first but Berry Gordy did not like their version at all. Then Marvin Gaye recorded it but again Berry Gordy wasn't sold on it and shelved it again. He then gave it to Gladys Knight & the Pips who made it a big hit. Then Marvin Gaye's version was released later on and of course another big hit.

    John Fogerty is the lead vocalist and the lead guitarist, his brother Tom Fogerty also plays guitar, Stu Cook is bass and Doug Clifford is drums and that's CCR, a band mostly known for their swamp-rock music and the legendary vocals of John Fogerty. You'd be hard pressed to find a bad song by them, I know I haven't heard one. You've barely scratched the surface of what's there, in store for you, if you continue down the rabbit hole. Don't worry, any song you pick by them, you'll love. Here's a list for ya, "Run Through The Jungle", "Commotion", Fortunate Son", "Travelin' Band", "Sweet Hitch-Hiker", "Green River", "Born On The Bayou", "Proud Mary", "Up Around The Bend" and "Who'll Stop The Rain", now that's a lot, but there's still more, of course. This was so freakin' awesome, glad you decided to do CCR's version of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", but, maybe you'll try to listen to the longer version of it, there's lots more music involved, really cool.

    "Procession" sounds like an introduction to "The Story In Your Eyes". - As you can see others thought so too and posted them together. "Procession" takes you around the world in different genres and in time. Then you ROCK to The Story In Your Eyes". - "Procession" puts the mood in Moody Blues.

    If you read John Fogerty’s book, he talks about recording this track. He heard Marvin’s version in a department store. The store had the speakers separated. One in the back and one in the front. John was in the back of the store, and heard it on the speaker in that area. On that speaker, he mainly heard Marvin’s voice. He wasn’t a fan of Marvin’s earlier stuff, because being a rocker, he thought it was too produced and slick. But hearing this isolated track he could zone in on his voice and notice how powerful it was. He got together with the band. He made the piano riff from Marvin’s version into a guitar riff. It was then he realized he could make it into a jam. The album track was an eleven minute long jam.

    I didn't know Gladys Knight and the Pips did it first. 🤔 I love CCR. My dad's albums, 45 records and 8 track tapes introduced me to them. They never get old and will last forever.👍😊🤘🎸🥁🎤🎵🎶 Love your reactions.

    Marvin's version, and Gladys', were smooth and soulful. With CCR and Fogerty, you get the down and dirty.

    Well there one more version by Gladys Knight and the Pips that will take you to church and raise your spirits. Praise the Lord !!
    And just let you know Gladys Knight and the Pips have a song with some southern cooking that pops like hot grease in the skillet. Gladys takes it back home to Georgia to tell you the story of how DADDY COULD SWEAR ( I DECLARE ). Both of you like this one. I promise.

    The longer version has extra sauce. It's my favorite version of this song. The Kaiser Chiefs did a more recent cover - it's pretty good.

    **rubs her arms to ease the goosebumps** Y'all! I'm so glad I live on a somewhat secluded piece of property! My neighbors would *hate* me if I had any! 🤣🤣 It's the subtle things that get me in this one like the way John sings the word "heard." It sounds like "hoyd" to me, almost like a New England accent or something.. But his *vocals?! Fuh-get* about it! Lol! P.L.U.R.R. from Austin!
    Edited to correct my city. I just moved here *today* & I'm loving every minute of it!
