But yeah for axial correction and rotation and to match velocity changes with the craft you are approaching. And with how the crew are running around, these ships have some sci-fi gravitational field generators so you have to have some massive counter-thrust to compensate for that.
Anyway, that nerdy shit aside, because it's the 90s and Top Gun and all the other shit so y'know, Air Force jargon haha

This movie may have been a box office bomb, but for some fans of the game series, this movie is a guilty pleasure. After 20+ years, I think it's time to look at considering rebooting the series and try making it into a tv series and perhaps a movie trilogy as long as the writers stay faithful to the original story source material and have all the ships resemble their game counterparts and have the Kilrathi look like their game counterparts, complete with hair, instead of looking like bald rats.

Nope, there's a planet below it as well. Remember, in space there stars, planets, asteroids, and many other things all around you.
No kidding! Did you also know that the attraction of gravity is proportionate to the distance you are from the larger body's center of mass? Gravity is a function of the slope of spacetime. And if they were orbiting the planet, that spacecraft they pushed off would have inherited the angular momentum of the carrier thus not fallen at all due to the orbital velocity...

Wing Commander had scenes from almost every type of 20th c. war film (in this case an aircraft carrier) including a 'submarine being depth charged' scene later on

Um, all the space scenes were awesome.
I must unmaliciously but vehemently disagree.
There were too many dark, muddy, unclear, and unappealing space sequences. If the director and SFX crew were going for a "silent-running submarine" cat-and-mouse vibe like in The Hunt For Red October, well, they succeeded in making sectors of space appear as featureless and murky as the bottom of the Marianas Trench.
A few ship designs were okay, and I have always loved the designs from the actual WC computer games, but the movie's Rapier fighter is one fugly, grimy, tetanus-covered heap of misbegotten durasteel. I read that they were going for a WW2-inspired torpedo-fighter look, but it's just a brutally graceless design that looks scratchbuilt from a jumble of A-10 parts while blindfolded.
Although some of the Terran fighters and capital ships of the earliest games had a charmingly gawky, chunky aesthetic, much different from the sleek, curvy, alien Kilrathi style, this take on the Rapier sullies the good name of Wing Commander, and SF in general.
If you watch carefully as the Terran ship launches a missile broadside at an enemy craft for a quick, decisive kill, one of the breech-loading hatches appears on the verge of losing its seal as it shakes and spurts a tongue of flame. Someone re-grease the gaskets already!
And I haven't even touched upon the cast, acting, dialogue, or plot, which deserves its own screed.
However, as slapdash and forgettable as the movie is, it's one of my guiltiest bad/good pleasures, up there with Johnny Mnemonic. If I see it while channel-surfing or find it sitting on a media shelf, I'm in all the way. "Earnestly incompetent" might be the simplest and most accurate descriptor for WC...sort of like myself. :-)
Especially the ones with the Garfield's, sorry, Kolrathy in them.

THANK YOU! Even if the pilot is dead, they can use the broken fighter for spare parts. Deconstruct it, salvage what you can, dispose of the unusable material. That fighter's main body looks fairly intact. I think with a full strip down it could fly again with an overhaul.

***** Of course it was. I swear, this movie gets worse the more you learn about it. I vaguely remember watching it on VHS.
Most logical reason I could put towards it would be the slow movement of the vehicle. The fighters were low on fuel and needed to land asap. Pushing it off the edge was more feasible than pushing it all the way back inside the airlock.
That being said, why the other ships couldn't fly OVER the wreckage given how far away it was, or why it fell off the edge since I would assume artificial grav systems only would work inside the life supported parts of the carrier, I have no answer for.

With current gen PCs, editing software, and certain elements of the furry community, I reckon we could re-edit this movie with top down special effects, replace the Kilrathi scenes with, y'know, ACTUAL felinoids (not patients from the Christopher Blair memorial Kilrathi Burns unit as seen)...I think we could MAKE this movie!!!

Honestly, an abridged version of the movie would make a pretty decent TV series episode. Just cut out as much Freddy as possible, the pilgrim bullshit, and Kilrathi face shots.

I reckon we could creatively trim the acting scenes (most were actually decent), and get a team of people - from graphics savvy folk to furries and cosplayers, and re-work this movie from the ground, up.
The pilgrim subplot had some of my favorite scenes. I always wanted to know more about them.

Wing Commander... a game series well deserving of a better movie. Luckily the games kind of fill that role themselves so nevermind. =) Besides, I have a personal conviction that anything with Malcolm McDowell in it is automatically at least twice as good as it would be otherwise, and without him being a badass it's just not the same. XD

Not a videogame player of this one tbh, but I remember I saw this movie on TV when I had 10yo and I was trying to remember the movie name since then to watch it again. Today I googled for this specific scene by typing "movie scene where dozer pushes spaceship" because it was the only scene I remembered; then found this video and most importantly, the Movie name.

If you are into older games, all of the Wing Commander games are pretty solid. Much better story then this movie.

"Wing Commander " was made the way it was, on purpose.
The character building and direction of the actors is one of the best I've seen.
For example, the Captain knows of Mr. Tagger, but doesn't personally know him... then, when Taggert jumps the Tiger Claw through... the Captain smiles, as if to acknowledge that what he had heard was true.
Excellent movie, purposefully made the way it is!
