      All my gripes with it are stylistic decisions. The gameplay is tried and true mario and rock solid.

      New super mario bros 2 is ridiculously easy and not nearly as fun as U. Other than this one-star coin everything has been easy. It is the second one in the last level in starworld I do not know how to get it.

      After beating world 2, the player has the option of the water world or ice world, which are worlds 3 and 4. After beating either one, the player goes to world 5. So, it's essentially 3-1.

    • @incarnate789
      @incarnate789 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Sparkling Waters is considered world 3. When you beat Acorn Plains, Cake Layer Desert and Frosted Glacier, the file will say that world 1, 2 and 4 are completed. So it's 4-1

    • @MayroSMM
      @MayroSMM 6 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      @Alexander Sinkins Wii didn't have the extra challenge mode that NSMBU had though. I think that extra mode kinda makes U objectively better than Wii. Plus I don't see how the main game in Wii is better than the main game in U.

    • @calebdonaldson8770
      @calebdonaldson8770 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@linus6718 Just like NSMB2, hard DLC or extra modes do not compensate for a pathetically easy game. Wii's difficulty stomped U's throughout the whole game. Don't even get me started on World 8 & 9. I give U more points for creativity & aesthetics, but Wii was more fun, faster-paced, and much harder. Now, Luigi U is more of a contender.

    • @linus6718
      @linus6718 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@calebdonaldson8770 I didn't say the extra mode compensates for the difficulty, I didn't make an argument for difficulty at all. I was saying that the "challenges" mode adds a whole lot more fun content to the game, way more than Wii had. There's even the boost rush thing, which I wasn't a huge fan of, but it was there.

    Wonderful example of how you can put difficulty settings in a game (without explicitly putting them in).
    People who want a lower or easier difficulty feel like they're being smart for finding these secret passages and power-ups, rather than feeling punished or patronised for taking the easy route.
    The harder challenges, on the other hand, are made optional so weaker players don't get absolutely frustrated by them and more competent players have the same enjoyment.
    Amazing analysis Ceave!

    Your videos are always a joy to watch! You have an amazing video personality while still creating an informed presentation! I always look forward to when you release a new video. By the way, why do you call the enemies Goompers and Koopers?

    I really appreciate this video. I’ve made a lot of traditional Mario levels and they’re mostly pretty good. They’re all based on ideas from my mind with a theme for each level but I still want to keep getting better at creating levels.
    So I stumbled on this video and started creating a level with this formula. I put the themed challenges in throughout the level and I wasn’t sure about it. I felt the level felt samey and bland.
    I saved and then came back to it and as I started polishing the level with different challenges for different skill sets and slight adjustments in areas, it started to feel more and more like an actual official Mario Bros. level and I think it’s the deepest most fun level I’ve made yet.
    It’s a basic level for the most basic players but under the surface packed with challenges for skilled players and alternate challenging routes for speed runners.
    Because of this formula my level feels so deep with challenges and secrets without being congested and I’m actually having a lot fun the countless times of play testing.
    This vid has definitely taken my level making to the next level.

    Why have you not been hired as a level designer yet? You clearly understand some of the most important mechanics behind these games.
