Rest In Peace Mr Tyner. Thank you for years and years of great music. I loved EVERY TIME I saw you live and have played your recordings for FORTY YEARS. Thank You
McCoy Tyner along with other jazz artists from the '70's era of the likes of Donald Byrd, Rodney Franklin, Ronnie Laws, LL Smith, Herbie (2.0) and other (obscure?) artists have since been forgotten about. At the time their period offerings were generally discounted by the old jazz guard aficionados as jazz pop-progressive and negatively reviewed. Now unearthing these classics exposes the brilliance of late '60's to early '80's jazz. Thanks to KACE LA Sunday afternoon programming in the '80's and Concerts By The Sea Redondo Beach, The Lighthouse Hermosa Beach (of which I still frequent, Reggae Sunday's) for the memories. We'll miss McCoy, have long missed Phyllis and hope other surviving artists from this period can share their brilliance with their followers one more time...
This is a masterpiece!!! McCoy Tyner was one of the greatest Jazz artist of our time and generations and, the late Phyllis Hyman was one of the best vocalist ever!!!!! Real superstars!!! (project 52) #kingjames
I remember hearing the radio announcer say Phyllis Hyman passed away. I was in such disbelief, I called the radio station and spoke with the DJ. When he got off of the phone with me, he announced "I know it hard to believe but true". I was heartbroken and wondering why, why, why. But you don't what a person is going through know matter how on top of the world they may seem.
this song was my victory lap song when l finally got in the college of design to start my study in fashion design w/now l am a fully vetted fashion illustration teacher!! It was like the music of me coming into my full realization , l miss her deeply
My all time favorite female singer never got the pleasure to see her live i was only in an area on her tour stop once and couldn't get off work I love Phyllis Hyman McCoy complimented her well like Grover Pharoah Norman and Michael Never another Phyllis or that voice such passion and rawness in her voice and her songs.... I mean talk about Making you feel you are there with her when it happened ❤ Miss you Phyllis Rest in Peace and Paradise RIPP to you too McCoy
Such a phenomenal talent. Other than Whitney Houston, I can't think of anyone's voice I miss more. Thank God Chaka and Stephanie Mills are still around!
Yes I still have that album and loved this along with "I'll be around." She was one of my favorites along with Teena Marie, Angela Bofil and Gladys Night. Fortunate to have seen all of them live. Seen Phyllis in Dallas and in Buffalo NY. Such a great voice and tall and very attractive. One of the best voices I've ever heard. She is truly missed by people who love real talent.😇☺
McCoy heard Phyllis on the radio singing her hit "You Know How To Love Me" in about 1979. He liked what he heard. He contacted her people. And this album is the result. Similarly with Carlos Santana. In an interview in Downbeat magazine in about 1980 he said he always wanted to play with McCoy Tyner. A year or so later he did. On this album.
In the early '80's Phyllis Hyman was rapidly rising in popularity. She was promoted by Clive Davis, CEO of his own Arista Records (?). And then in 1983 he "discovered" a 19 year old singer named Whitney Houston. Her voice bowled him over. She was singing back up for her mother Cissy at a venue in N.J. When he came across her he quickly began promoting her heavily. She had it all. The voice, first and foremost. The looks. The stage presence. Davis more or less quickly then cast Phyllis aside after coming across Whitney. Handing off her career to other lesser execs at his record label to promote her. Her career quickly began to fade.Phyllis was always bitter about that. He promoted Whitney HEAVILY. Producing her blockbuster first album in 1985. And the rest, as they say, is history.
I remember this from McCoy Tyner's 'Lookin' Out' album on Columbia Records, around 1982/83. There are three tracks that feature Phyllis Hyman on the album, this one, and the other two being 'I'll Be Around' and 'In Search of my Heart' - all three I believe to be Phyllis at her very best - she is so on form here. 'Lookin' Out' can be found on CD but to my knowledge the album is yet to appear as a download. 'Lookin' Out' can of course be purchased via eBay as a vinyl. All three of the tracks featuring Phyllis are in my top 20 all-time recordings list.Phyllis possessed a wonderful jazz voice and I remember her performing in late 1983 on 'Sunday Night from the London Palladium' singing the 'A Train'. McCoy Tyner's album came out around the same time as 'Low Ride' by Earl Klugh; 'All Around The Town' "Live" by Bob James; "How's Everything" by Sadao Watanabe; 'The Hunter' by Joe Sample; 'The Good Life' by Bobbi Humphrey; 'Music Year 2000' by Boris Gardener; 'As We Speak' and 'Backstreet' by David Sanborn; and 'Dreams of Tomorrow' by Lonnie Liston Smith. All great albums of the day.
@@byronmcgee6777 I was fortunate in obtaining an import CD copy of 'Looking Out' by McCoy Tyner back in 2010. I did of course have my original vinyl from 1982 but this was starting to get worn... Occasionally CD copies do turn up of the album, but lately these have been changing hands for over £100. I believe the McCoy Tyner / Phyllis Hyman tracks have been available on iTunes though. Hope this helps.
One of the best songs and ladies in our time..I love the mood of this song!. I actually met Phyllis at the "doc of the bay " in Berkely 1985.. Thanks for sharing!
It is truly amazing how people now are truly appreciating what Phyllis Hyman was and is all alone, a vocal goddess , back then you didn’t hear a lot of artist saying and speaking praise unto her, but now they are 👌👌👌, huh I knew this when she debuted in 1976.
This song would've been perfect for a movie victory scene. Glory in every note of the tune. Phyllis helped contribute to it. RIP.
So much passion and emotion in her voice. I miss her dearly....
Today 30 June 2020, is the 25th anniversary of her passing and 6 July 2020 would have been her 71st birthday. Rest In Peace Phyllis Hyman.
I bought this album by Pharaoh Sanders and I couldn't get enough of this song. This is 2o24 and still love it.Good music never die.
That was McCoy Tyner. She had 3 songs on the album.

It must have been so difficult for Phyllis to overcome this let down. If Davis only measured the value of her musicianship, it's really needed today.
