McCoy Tyner along with other jazz artists from the '70's era of the likes of Donald Byrd, Rodney Franklin, Ronnie Laws, LL Smith, Herbie (2.0) and other (obscure?) artists have since been forgotten about. At the time their period offerings were generally discounted by the old jazz guard aficionados as jazz pop-progressive and negatively reviewed. Now unearthing these classics exposes the brilliance of late '60's to early '80's jazz. Thanks to KACE LA Sunday afternoon programming in the '80's and Concerts By The Sea Redondo Beach, The Lighthouse Hermosa Beach (of which I still frequent, Reggae Sunday's) for the memories. We'll miss McCoy, have long missed Phyllis and hope other surviving artists from this period can share their brilliance with their followers one more time...
2020 uptown uptown uptown kickin it
Enrico Anderson ......💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾❤️
Where can I find lyrics for this song?
They're on the actual album cover.
Rest In Peace Mr Tyner. Thank you for years and years of great music. I loved EVERY TIME I saw you live and have played your recordings for FORTY YEARS. Thank You
Phyllis Hyman and McCoy Tyner did the hell out of this LP. I miss both of them 😭 McCoy Tyner has passed away as well today. R.I.P McCoy and Phyllis.
McCoy heard Phyllis on the radio singing her hit "You Know How To Love Me" in about 1979. He liked what he heard. He contacted her people. And this album is the result. Similarly with Carlos Santana. In an interview in Downbeat magazine in about 1980 he said he always wanted to play with McCoy Tyner. A year or so later he did. On this album.
In the early '80's Phyllis Hyman was rapidly rising in popularity. She was promoted by Clive Davis, CEO of his own Arista Records (?). And then in 1983 he "discovered" a 19 year old singer named Whitney Houston. Her voice bowled him over. She was singing back up for her mother Cissy at a venue in N.J. When he came across her he quickly began promoting her heavily. She had it all. The voice, first and foremost. The looks. The stage presence. Davis more or less quickly then cast Phyllis aside after coming across Whitney. Handing off her career to other lesser execs at his record label to promote her. Her career quickly began to fade.Phyllis was always bitter about that. He promoted Whitney HEAVILY. Producing her blockbuster first album in 1985. And the rest, as they say, is history.
It must have been so difficult for Phyllis to overcome this let down. If Davis only measured the value of her musicianship, it's really needed today.
Yes I still have that album and loved this along with "I'll be around." She was one of my favorites along with Teena Marie, Angela Bofil and Gladys Night. Fortunate to have seen all of them live. Seen Phyllis in Dallas and in Buffalo NY. Such a great voice and tall and very attractive. One of the best voices I've ever heard. She is truly missed by people who love real talent.😇☺
Ms Phyllis Hyman at her very best...This is Outstanding...
Still kicking it in 2019
Dang,,cant get the version with the brothers black on it
It is truly amazing how people now are truly appreciating what Phyllis Hyman was and is all alone, a vocal goddess , back then you didn’t hear a lot of artist saying and speaking praise unto her, but now they are 👌👌👌, huh I knew this when she debuted in 1976.
Me too
