I did this fix to my Rowenta iron about 5 years ago. My mom just mentioned that she just bought a new iron to replace her malfunctioning Rowenta iron. I asked if it goes on and off when you move the cord. Yup. Gonna fix hers tomorrow. Thanks for the refresher.
I appreciate your letting us see warts and all from beginning to end--the struggle with taking off the back of the iron, getting the cording back in....More realistic and so more doable by the average Joe--and Josette. Hands were out of camera range at one point, but you figured that out and compensated. Thanks.
Thank you VERY much for posting this video. I just replaced the cord on my Rowenta Steamium iron. The problem was at the plug end of the cord so I bought a new cord at the hardware store and, following your awesome instructions, installed it.
Thanks! My wife quilts and is on her 4th Rowenta, each lasting about 4-5 years. I always suspected the problem was the control dial was getting dirty since it seemed erratic. I thought a broken cord would just fail and not be intermittent, particularly when it did so inside of the cord capture. Found this exact break point! I ended up shaving a small amount off of the sharp edges on the cord capture.
THANK YOU!!! I’ve been Holding onto my Favorite iron for Years in hopes that I could replace the cord!!! You have Just Saved me a lot of Headache!!!! I’m going to try this as Soon as possible!!! THANK YOU!!!
Quick comment on a great repair video... most hand held appliances use 'polarized' plugs meaning one wire is designed to carry the voltage, the other is effectively a 'ground'. So, BEFORE cutting the wires, make a long mark along one of the wires with a sharpie so you connect the the wires back so the 'ground' wire stays ground. It is very easy to get them confused and cross the voltage wire to what is designed to be the 'ground' wire - which is VERY dangerous for hand help appliances. Again, great repair video - just a note of caution on the polarized power cord.
Thank you Adam, I fixed the iron. I made one change, instead of using couplers, I used Liquid Electrical Tape to join the wires. This was good as the space inside is very tight. I then used electrical tape just to make sure it was safe.
This video was Awesome! I fixed my iron in less than 20 minutes. The first ten was realizing I had the star screw driver in my power drill bit set. Thanks!
Key question - why did you cut the old cord and make a new join with the replacement instead of disconnecting the old cord completely at the pre-existing join with the heating element, connecting the new wire there?
Great video. My Rowenta is not exactly like the one shown (I think ours is an older model); however, it is somewhat similar. I didn't try to locate the broken wire section; I just cut out the ~ 6 inches of 'probably broken cord' & re-spliced it in to the iron. WORKS GREAT! Now she is deciding whether to return the "new Rowenta" that we ordered as a replacement.
Thank you! The power to my Rowenta decided to be intermittent tonight. I found this video and either my husband or I will fix it. I did cringe when you used the cutters to strip the wire.
Thank you for such a clear and useful video. I was about to go and purchase a new iron, but decided to check the internet to see if anyone else had the same problem and came upon your video. My husband watched it and because of your careful displays and instructions I now have my Rowenta Pro Master iron working again!
It's a good repair, however, you haven't addressed the root cause of the problem. The reason it broke is the crappy design that pinches the wires in the clamp as a strain relief mechanism. A couple of years down the road you'll be doing the same thing when it breaks again. For a longer-term fix, trim back the piece of the clamp that presses on the wires, and tie an underwriter's knot just under the pivot ball. That will prevent the cord from pulling out, and won't cause another breakage over time.
I just fixed my DW8080. I noticed that the actual point of contact on the strain relief is hinged, and comes to a point, which is exactly where the pinch point is located. I filed the point down just a LITTLE BIT to dull the point and lessen the pressure on the wire strands (I hope). The cord still doesn't come out, so it isn't a safety concern.
Have the same iron with the EXACT problem. Handy to have a T20 Torx bit and couple of small wire nuts to finish the job. One additional thing I did is trim back a little on the notch on the wire clamp to minimize the wire kink. Hope this will make the wire last a little longer then normal. Thanks for posting this DIY video.
Thank you. It was worth buying the torx T20 and doing the repair myself. The pinch point on the wire is a poor design. I didn't tighten the wire down 100% to lessen the pressure and hopefully prevent the issue from happening again.
Thanks for posting this! My iron was having the same problem. After watching your video, it took me less time to fix my iron than it took to watch the video! :-)
Sweet!! Thank you James for the tip! I was going to just give up and go buy another one, but the same thing happened to another one I had and now I know exactly what to do with my current one that is doing the exact same thing! Wonderful!
I am now a iron electrician 😂 Thank you. The only thing is the little screws inside were different & I didn’t know what size they were. I used a tint pliers to unscrew.
This is a great, clear video. I am going to try it on my very expensive Oliso Pro iron that was going on and off and now won't come on at all. I hope it works! Thanks so much!!!
Less than 10 minute repair saved my Rowenta DW5080 Focus from 2018 that was actually still made in Germany including the stainless steel sole (I don't believe today's models are). It's not even about the money, I can afford a new iron, it's about keeping otherwise good quality and about fixing things in a society that's all too used to disposing things.
Good Information, I would like to repair a black and decker D6000 all temperature steam iron that won't get hot and I would like to repair it myself. Is it possible that you can provide me with any leads on the disassembly of this unit. Any assistance that you can provide will be helpful as well as appreciated. Thanks
Hey Adam...you seem like a really patient guy who I thank for sharing your knowledge! Anyways- I'm having a problem with my rowenta steam iron- yellow light keeps blinking and doesn't get past lukewarm. Could you help with showing me how to repair that? Appreciate your help! Thanks
Hi Adam. My Rowenta I purchased used on ebay...it's a beauty but randomly shuts off. I just unplug and replug and it works for a few mins. Do you suspect a cord issue? Or heating element? Do you repair?
Great video. It seems my Rowenta Focus DZ5080 has the same problem. I am going to follow the steps you took in this video and try and repair it. I did notice that the major problem is that the wire is pinched inside by the white plastic piece that clamps it together. And this piece is sharp and is very tight, therefore pinching the wire and resulting in this problem. In the video after you repaired the wire you put it back in the same plastic clamp, and it looks like this problem can occur again in the future. Is there a way to avoid securing it with the white plastic piece?
I assume you are talking about the clamp that I am screwing together at 6:19 The clamp stops you from pulling the cord and having the connection split apart. Many hand tools and other small appliances have some sort of design that grips the plug. Chances are that it is not going to break the wires in the clamped area but further towards the plug. It's a safety thing, so I would just use the same clamp rather than try to find a new way around it.
Have the iron apart and instead of two wire nuts I have a 4 port bar which the red wire and cord wire feed into. They are soldered in and have a special attachment which inserts into this clear plastic bar...how do I reuse this? Thank you so much. Michele
Hi Adam, thank you for this great video. I have a Rowenta Ecointelligence iron that I loved but it now occasionally leads from the base, around the ball a the end of the cord. Is there anything to be done? Thanks for any help or advice!
I have a Rowenta Professional Lux that doesn't heat up. The light stays lit but it is not hot, not even warm :-( Do you know what could be the problem? Thanks for any help
Are you familiar with repairing boards of Rowenta Steam Irons? I have a DG8960 and the small board inside is damaged and I am hitting a brick wall. I replaced a mosfet on the board but I think I have a short now! Where can I reach you in case you are familiar with board repair?
I have a Rowenta Professional Luxe. The thermostat dial is very tight. Also, when "rocking" side-to-side, the auto turn on doesn't work. Do you think there is any relationship. Is it a spring?
Good this video is still on youtube thank you so much for showing this I have thrown away two Rowena iron with this problem this last one I will fix it because it been 4 years now and the cord is acting up again.
I had the same issue with this open circuit. I did the same repair but I ended up grinding down the teeth that was causing the issue. Thanks for the video!
how does the auto-off function work on Rowenta irons? The light on the iron stays on, but the iron does not heat up. Is this a thermostat issue or circuit board issue?
I have a D3030 Blacker and Decker and suspect that there is an a problem internally. Can you help me to disassemble this iron? I have removed the two knobs one for steam and the other for water. I have also removed the circular temperature control knob. I don't want to destroy my iron. Please help. Thanks
I wanted to know how to replace a electrical cord for the Rowenta 6200 compact value standup steamer since the electrical prong has now melted at the base of the plug.
...*No* - the most common problem is a break - open circuit. A short is where one conductor touches another - usually blows a fuse A most excellent video notwithstanding - well done...
What about a iron that has retracting cord but wires good but cord won’t retract. Something has come off\ broken cuz it rattles inside. But I don’t know where the screws are to take off the cover.
My search was Rowenta Repair and this was the same problem my iron had (well mine shorted or sparked) hope this works because I'll do it without power just in case.
Adam .. I have a SunBeam Steam Master Iron Model: GCSBCL-234, It does not working ( no power), could you please send me a disassembly diagram to check the voltage, I do not want to damage it ..
Hi-I'm curious to know why you would not try to fix the leak. Would it involve more than replacing an old & worn out gasket? I am curious because my Rowenta Iron is leaking & I would rather fix (-$10) it than replace it (+$60). Thanks.

Rowenta quick working, husband watched this and now I am happily ironing again!!! Thanks so much for a great video!
Thank you! Took me 30 minutes to repair. Saved $60!
You can probably order the tool online or go to harbor freights.
With just $20 in tools and caps, I just fixed my first appliance! Thanks for a terrific video!
The video that keeps on giving! You posted this ten years ago, and it's exactly what I needed. Thank you!
Thanks for posting this! I have the EXACT same Rowenta iron and the break in the cord was in the same place. You saved me at least $150.
Was going to throw my old rowenta iron away in the garbage, then I found this video. The video was helpful. Thanks.
Thank you VERY much for posting this video. I just replaced the cord on my Rowenta Steamium iron. The problem was at the plug end of the cord so I bought a new cord at the hardware store and, following your awesome instructions, installed it.

Thanks! Just fixed my Rowenta DW8080! Saved me from buying a new cord assembly and possibly a whole new iron.
Thank for you for the video . Followed it step by step and it worked. You just saved me $75.
So happy to see something get fixed rather than thrown away. Good job 👏
The trouble was exactly where you showed us ! This Iron is expensive !
Thanks for your time !
Not a problem! Glad to be of help.

If you didn't do your recommended step, how do you know which one is which after the fact?
@@punji1977- the hot on the cord is typically smooth and the neutral has ribbing or stripes
Thank you for taking time to make this video. Fixed my wife's prized Rowenta.
I"ve been holding onto my non-working Rowena (tired of trashing them). Finally, I'm going to give repairing it a shot. Thank you, Adam!
Thanks! You helped me fix an $80 hair dryer.
Adam,
Thanks. Iron works fine now. Saved me from buying a new one.
Been there done that with Rowenta Iron; Faced with the same problem again, now same iron as you said. Good video. On the job list again.

Adam,
Just saw your video and it was great, just fixed 2 of my Rowenta irons!! Saved me $90 bucks.
I don't have to buy a new iron. My iron works. Thanks AdamDIY.
Thank you! The power to my Rowenta decided to be intermittent tonight. I found this video and either my husband or I will fix it. I did cringe when you used the cutters to strip the wire.

Thank you. We have a Professional Luxe. I opened it and found the same break, though nearer to the swivel. Appreciate your video. H
I need to replace my rowenta cord. Is it 16 gauge?
Thank you so much, I love my iron and didn't want to give it up.
This is a great, clear video. I am going to try it on my very expensive Oliso Pro iron that was going on and off and now won't come on at all. I hope it works! Thanks so much!!!
Thanks for your video and instructions. It worked perfectly and saved me $60 bucks!!
Adam thank you so much. I have the same problem with my rowenta and I am going to fix it myself.
I just fixed my rowenta focus iron thanks to this video! Thank You!!!!!
patthemaniacful That iron is very expensive, I'm glad you were able to fix it
Thanks for sharing an excellent video instructions on fixing the broken cord.
Your a life saver. Took 15 min tops
Hello Adam, this was very helpful. Fixed my problem and saved me some money. Much appreciated.
Thanks man, headed out to buy some of those wire clamps.
Our Rowenta iron is doing the same exact thing, Thanks for this helpful video!

Thank you !! I have 2 Rowenta iron with a short. The closest repair shop is South Carolina
You are welcome! I hope it worked out.
I have two expensive irons that I am sure have this problem...Thank you so much...I am going to give this a try
Thanks for making the video. It had all the information I needed to fix the iron. Well done!
Hey Adam, thanks man, I just used the wire nuts there already and spliced it there. Thanks for the insight.
How to test thermostate and element
what type of screwdriver do you use or what tools do i need to open up the iron?
Thanks Adam. I fixed this problem with our iron following your instructions. Now my wife thinks I'm a genius.
Good Information, I would like to repair a black and decker D6000 all temperature steam iron that won't get hot and I would like to repair it myself. Hmmm.... That would be hard to do without the iron in front of me. It's blinking steady? Or is it a flicker?

vlow714 That's a great idea
It's called an intermittent open not a short, a short would be between 2 conductors & cause the fuse or breaker to open.
Thanks, iron works perfectly well now.
how does the auto-off function work on Rowenta irons? The light on the iron stays on, but the iron does not heat up. Is this a thermostat issue or circuit board issue?

Thanks Adam! Great job in your explanation and video.
Thank you Brother, it worked like a charm. Keep up the OUTSTANDING work/videos.
Not the same iorn as mine, but I think it is the same problem. We will try your solution. Wish you had told us where to purchase the diagnostic tool.
+Jordan Sherman Here you go! www.harborfreight.com/non-contact-voltage-tester-97218.html
Thank you. Excellent video demonstration.
what size wire cap are they? Thanks
My search was Rowenta Repair and this was the same problem my iron had (well mine shorted or sparked) hope this works because I'll do it without power just in case.
I just did exactly what you did my iron works. Hopefully it will last me another 5 years.
This was really helpful, thank you!
Adam .. I have a SunBeam Steam Master Iron Model: GCSBCL-234, It does not working ( no power), could you please send me a disassembly diagram to check the voltage, I do not want to damage it ..
Thanks Adam will have to do ours, same issue. Thanks again.
Thanks James Moore!
What's the name of the insulated material you used to cover the conductor
Heat shrink tubing
i have a rowenta effective comfort 1500w vord real and it stopped getting hot i.
the indicators light comes on HELP
What do you suggest for irons that don't heat up and leak? Could it be the same problem as a damaged cord?
I would not try to fix it if it leaks. No, that is not a cord problem.
Hi-I'm curious to know why you would not try to fix the leak. Would it involve more than replacing an old & worn out gasket? I am curious because my Rowenta Iron is leaking & I would rather fix (-$10) it than replace it (+$60). Thanks.
I had similar problem so I fixed so thank you. U gave me hope.

my iron is a Shark and it shuts itself off when I'm ironing. dont know if it's a cord issue or if the auto off feature is just going nuts. can the auto off be bypassed or eliminated? I'm a seamstress and auto off really kind of sucks for me
Sorry about the slow reply. It's hard to say, I don't know what safety features they may have in that brand. If it happens randomly it is likely a broken wire connection. If it happens at a fairly predictable time I would guess it is a safety being tripped.
