I'm glad you mentioned having money set aside for vet bills, as I see so many posts online from people who have a sick exotic pet and haven't done this and so they can't afford vet bills. I would also add that anyone considering an exotic pet should make sure they have an exotic vets local enough to them, as that's another thing many people fail to look into before getting a reptile and it's sometimes only once they become sick that their owner realises they can't find a vet to treat them, as most vets don't.

A coworker of mine is giving her beardie away and I've been very interested in getting one for a couple years. She was telling me about him and it sounds like they have just stopped caring for him and it makes me so sad and mad. His bulb went out a month ago, they only feed him crickets even though he is 4 years old, he is in a 20 gal enclosure and he is rarely taken out of it. I told her I would take him and I'm anxious to get this poor guy and give him a better life. I loved your helpful video and am open to any more tips or advice for getting this guy in good health. Obviously I will getting him to the vet first thing too.

I got my beardie from Petsmart, and I don’t recommend! She’s very healthy now, and we did work very hard to make sure she developed no health issues while she was young. She does have many weird kinks in her tail due to her origins. They sold her while she was far too young (2-3 months old) and many I see being sold there now are even younger. They keep water bowls in their enclosure and keep several different sized babies in the same tank. The tank is super small as well. Just dont buy animals from petsmart.

      @Marcelo Delgado a breeder

    • @dharkomens
      @dharkomens 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

@Marcelo Delgado reptile expo, breeder, reptile retail (there are stores that sell reptiles-only, not like petsmart), and believe or not, cragslist. A lot of people sell theirs because they are moving, or cant longer care much for them, and most of the time they are healthy. Oh and of course, online reptile stores! (although they tend to be more expensive, not including the shipping).
But petco doesnt automatically means bad beardies. They do have a bad reputation, and its very very true, 90% of petsmarts are horrible with reptiles. But that doesnt mean your local one is bad. You just have to personally go and check them out. One of my two beardies is from a petsmart, and he is very healthy, always has been since I got him 3 years ago. He did have a very very mild case of coccidia (worms) but it was waaay after I got him from petsmart, I took him to the vet, got a 1 week medication, and returned to normal, not like he was sick and not eating, he looked and behaved completely normal, and the vet said he almost didnt prescribed him the medication because it was a very low levels of coccidia. But anyways, my point is, check out your petsmart and look for this things:
      1. Do they house a bunch of beardies in one tank? red flag
      2. Are they in small tanks? red flag
      3. Are they in loose substrate like sand? red flag
      4. Are they literally 1-3 weeks old? (yes I've seen that and its aweful they do that) red flag
      5. Are they lethargic and not very active? Including not wide open eyes and not very alert? red flag
      6. Check each individual beardie, how they behave. Are they basking or just chilling in a good straight posture with their head up, are they in good weight, what have they been
feeding them and with supplements or not, check the temperature in their tanks and see if they are good or not.
And maybe other points that I'm forgetting to say.
If the stores that I said above are not available to you, or cant buy from them, do go and check your petsmart, you never know, their beardies might just be in good condition and healthy. Mine was, I made sure to check everything before I bought him, and I don't regret it one bit. He is awesome and has been a lovely beardie since day 1 at his permanent home.
I just realize your comment is 1 month old now, so I hope you made the right decision and bought your beardie!

I've been waiting for a general care guide for beardies from you for ages! So glad we finally got one. I've had my boy for a little over two years and my aim is to eventually make him a bioactive enclosure (but I'm not in a steady place in my life right now/am moving frequently so it would be more hassle than it's worth). I also have trouble keeping his humidity low enough and keeping his temps high enough, and he is a picky one and doesn't want to eat his salads. I have a food scale that I use to monitor his weight though, and take him to annual checkups to make sure he's doing good. I really love you channel Tyler, keep up the good work! :)

It’s a miracle that he survived. My dog is afraid of other dogs and will attack out of fear. So I’m starting to realize how perfect beardeds are for emotional support animals. Thanks!

Loved this vid Tyler, thank you! I am a new beardie owner as of this year! I have wanted one for a long time and then an opportunity to rescue this adorable pint sized beardie came along and I knew it was my time! I have been watching ALL of your videos about bearded dragon care and husbandry and I love all of them, they've been super helpful. I love all your vids in general haha. It would be cool if you could do one about getting picky beardies to eat! Tips and tricks on how to make sure they are eating enough and eating all of the nutritious foods they need. I have tried a few different things but he thinks he's the Queen of Shiba and loves to be tong fed and thats almost the only time I will get him to eat his greens. it would be nice to not have to always do that, but I will do it if I must. Also it would be helpful to know what the signs are that your dragon is overweight and underweight. Food for thought! Thanks Tyler!

reptile expo, breeder, reptile retail (there are stores that sell reptiles-only, not like petsmart), and believe or not, cragslist. A lot of people sell theirs because they are moving, or cant longer care much for them, and most of the time they are healthy. Oh and of course, online reptile stores! There are some really amazing online stores that breed amazing beardie (although they tend to be more expensive, not including the shipping).
And at first your baby/juvenile beardie will be skittish, shy, maybe even a bit aggressive at first. It's completely normal. I'd say 90% of baby/juvenile beardies that come to their forever home are going to be like this. Mostly because of relocation stress. Just give it time, spend every day (although not too much, I'd say 30 min to an hour) trying to tame him. Walk near his tank often, dont grab him or attempt to grab him yet, just place your near his tank every day, talk to him, and eventually he will gain your trust. Pro tip: hand feeding does wonders to taming a beardie. And yes, at first that will probably seem impossible, but again, with time, he will start accepting the food form your hands, and that is a perfect step to taming him and gaining his trust. Get a feeding tongs, and start feeding him with that. That way he starts associating the feeding tong with food, and starts accepting his food via feeding tong. Then, start placing your hand closer to the end of the tong where the food is, if that makes sense. Every couple of days, move your hand closer, and closer to the end of the tong where the food is, and eventually getting your hand holding literally at the tip of where the tong is, that way your hand gets closer to the food, and the beardie starts eating the food that way closer to your hand. And then, start feeding him without the tongs, with your hand. And then you will gain his trust at hand feeding, a great advancement to gaining his trust and taming him. And also, as they grow they naturally mellow out. So give him time :).
This were just tips on taming him at the start. Over time as he is accustomed to eating from your hand, he will then start accepting you grabbing him, another step into completely taming him. While he is in your hands, sit down on the couch and place him on your chest/belly/lap, and dont do anything, just let him sit there and get accustomed to being with you. And eventually he will completely accept you and let you hold him whenever you want :). That's what I've done with both my beardies when I first got them. My first one was tough, he was a baby, skittish, and all that. And took months of work to taming him. My second one (the one from petco), I lucked out and he was always very calm from the start and very friendly.
Oh and that's another point I wanted to say if you choose to buy from petco. Ask the store employee if you can hold a beardie or two, and right there and then, you can tell weather a beardie is more friendly or skittish. ask the employee says no, ask her if you can just place your hand on top of the tank, or get your hand inside without grabbing one, then you can tell which beardies will immediately run away from your hand, and which ones stay and dont mind your hand, in which case you will now which one will be easier to handle/tame.
Hope all of this helped, and sorry for my bad english. And for this long ass comment lmao. I rambled on and on, just wanted to help another fella :D.
And of course, this were just tips on taming him, there are other videos, including on this channel, on other ways to tame him as well, I say try them all and see which one will be easier. To me, the way I did it is a more natural way, there is a video on this channel (which is great too) showing a way to tame a beardie by just holding him in your hands and petting him for a while. That could also work but I feel that's more forced. There is other research, although not extensive, on the setup for good care for beardies. You can watch other videos on setups, lights, tanks, temperature, everthing. Or if you want I can give you a few pointers on good setups. I was going to write that too here, but its already a pretty long message lmao.
Good luck, and enjoy your new friend!

The age range I was looking at was around 5 months to a year old maybe (but that's just a small preference once again) I just want to get one that is coming from a good place not just a retail pet store or something of that sort. And I live in a small town so theres really not any obvious place for me to be looking that I know of either way it's going to be a drive or shipping to get one and I know that I just need help at finding a starting place...

I’m a tafe student in Australia currently studying to become a vet nurse. One of my teachers works at pet smart or pet barn or one of those places and has worked there for years. One day she trusted one of her co workers to go sus out a breeder for the puppies that they were going to get in to sell. The co worker said everything was fine. Once the puppies got to the shop my teacher knew something was wrong. They were all sick and in incredibly poor condition. My teacher couldn’t just send them home so she bought them and got the lady’s info. Later after the woman left my teacher took all the puppies to the vet and some of them didn’t make it. My teacher did something she wasn’t allowed to. She called the rspca to go to the breeders address. The breeder was shut down and the other dogs were rescued. My teacher informed her boss of what had happened and the co worker was immediately fired. From that point onwards my teacher is the person that goes to check on the breeders and animals before they buy them. You are right in most cases that pet shops usually don’t care. But some do.

Cindy taylor you can put a piece of slate or a big enough rock in the enclosure so when they run across it it will help keep there nails filed down

I am getting a bearded dragon today I am researching all I can and luckily I had a very knowledgeable worker help us with that yesterday when we were looking and I have a tortoise so I know a bit about the background of reptiles. I fell in love with one when holding it and looking at it and I am so excited this was very helpful and I use the same light for my tortoise!

15-20 years is good to hear. On doing very limited research id read 8-10 years and was sad about only having my rescue boi for 6-8 years. Hopefully that means I’ll have him for longer ☺️

The first tip is soooooooo important. That was my first mistake, in the end my baby beardie died because it had ADV. after, I went to a local reptile store that has close connections to the breeder (he was actually there that day) and my new beardie is so happy and healthy!

My beardie lost most of her tail to one of her siblings. Now it's just an awkward stub.

I’ve been dying for one, so I’ve been trying my best to learn! Thanks for more information to add to my databank!
