1 Year Update on Stan, The Old & Angry Bearded Dragon!
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 7 ก.ย. 2024
- Stan is an 11 year old neglected bearded dragon I got a while ago. He came into us after living on calcium sand with minimal lighting and a diet of bearded dragon pellets for a decade. Since then, he appears frequently behind me in videos, and has a lot of interesting personality traits from his seemingly schizophrenic behaviors and odd aggression at nothing. He refused to eat anything coming in, his legs were in terrible shape, and overall wasn't in the best of condition. Today, I go over his time with us and how he's improved, adapted and changed, along with what I've learned about Gruncle Stan!

Would you recommend making hides out of the excavator clay for a leopard gecko? We’ve had a gecko for about a month and trying to learn.

Hey guys can you please comment how long to keep it on for. I'm getting a bearded dragon tommorow how long do you keep the basking light on and uvb light on.
Its probably to stimulate himself. However much they loved Stan they probably didn't give him much stimulation if the just gave him pellets and not much else.
Damn idk if I like Stan or Rosie more. While Rosie is an angry grandma turned sweetie, Stan is the ultimate joyless grandpa who refuses to have a wholesome redemption arc

Isn't that how it always works??? Like dads who say they hate cats and don't want one, but then you catch them cuddling together every night and wearing clothes with each other's faces. 😂
Dad: I do not want a dog.
Dad and the dog:
Stan is fighting enemies our feeble minds cannot understand. Hence why he bobs and waves at the same time 🧐
We are absolute idiots for even questioning him
Not quite the use of "Hence." You don't need the "why," it's a little redundant. An ideal phrase would be "Hence the bobbing..."

One word. Homestuck.
I adopted a two-year old bearded dragon six years ago. At the time, he was nearly obese. He had been living on a heat rock, which burned him slightly and which thankfully broke the day I got him. Today I am glad to say he is eight years old and still going strong. He's definitely a little skinny, but he IS eight so like, I guess that's okay. He still is quite active, and has the strongest feeding response I've ever seen on a bearded dragon. I am proud to say that he does NOT have MBD, and he eats a varied diet of collard greens, romaine lettuce, radicchio, and some carrots all topped with canned crickets because he can't hunt worth a darn. He was almost too lazy to hunt the HORNWORMS we gave him once, which were largely incapable of traversing terrain in general. I am also proud to say his pores are clear, which they most definitely were NOT when I first got him. He loves basking, climbing around his cage at odd hours, and pooping on couches. He's a good old boy, and I love him.
:)

Anyone else uncomfortable with him letting the roaches roam on the table
There's a video, I think the one with the baby beardies, where a roach escapes and you can see it run up his shirt lmao
last time i was this early alex was still coughing up calci sand
I absolutely agree with customizing your animal’s enclosure to their needs and preferences. They are individuals. My Cali king loooves blankets and soft things so I got him this soft crinkly tube made for ferrets and he loves going through it, easy stimulation as well. Who would have thought a snake would like a ferret toy lol
Yea, my beardie hates enclosures. Enclosures of any sizes stresses him out so he has free range of the house and gets to go outside with supervision. He gets baths and his food brought to him and he can run around and do laps from the living room, dinning room, and kitchen going in a circle. The other day we had a repair man here and he ran out to watch him to make sure they didnt do anything weird.
i've been literally thinking about stan all day i manifested this video into existence
Similar to cats, he is clearly interacting with the inter-dimensional beings. So cat morph Stan.
Thanks for sharing the update! He is a cool animal and I loved the ending!!

I completely agree, what is that about?!?
I find this story kind of amazing and it gives me hope as I'm in an almost identical situation. About 2 1/2 to 3 weeks ago my friend and I took in a bearded dragon (my first ever) that has been neglected his whole life. He's about 10 years old from what we know (crazy similarity) and lived his whole life in a tank that is too small for anything beyond a baby. With only newspaper, a single branch not even the width of his body, and no lamp. He had only been fed lettuce and never had solid stool. When we showed up he looked so weak, his color was pale, he was super skinny, super cold, and he barely responded to anything. I was frankly amazed he was still alive. For the first couple days he didn't move at all, I had to constantly check to see if he was breathing since it was so shallow. Eventually he opened his eyes and started to at least move his head around and I was very relieved since I wasn't sure if he would continue to live and I was going into this blind since the decision was sudden and I didn't know anyone who had ever owned a beardie. But he's improved so much so quickly and I'm so hopeful now for the future. He's been taking to foods beyond lettuce (at first he wouldn't eat anything except lettuce), he watches and focuses on everything I do, will constantly try to get my attention lol, and he looks overall to be so much happier. I feel like we're really bonding now, and its a bond I hope to keep with him for a long time. And seeing you and Stan gives me hope for Kimchi and I (new name since he's in a new, better home. His old name was lame anyways lol). I've been watching your vids for tips and good habits to care for beardies so thank you for that as well and I'm going to continue to grow and learn.
I need a shirt with a drawing of Stan with a text saying "We Stan"
Stan is so adorable and I’m glad you kept him! My rescue Old Gregg also head bobs for no reason. I’ll take him out into the living room where there aren’t any other animals, and he’ll head bob in multiple directions. I cannot figure out what he’s seeing. So funny!
So glad Stan is doing well! Stan might be bobbing to say "I feel good" or "I like this." My beardie (RIP Taz, 13 years) would bob after being fed or when I put him in his favorite window. You also might want to make pop noises with your lips 2-4 times in a row. One of your beardies might do it back! You could have a little conversation with them!

I would love to see a video about scaleless beardies. You’re probably one of the best people to talk about this issue.
😶
i don’t understand
*Wait...*
So like...a shaved lizard?
I didn't know beardies even came in scaleless.... o-0
@@e.g.2261 Yeah, it's a pretty controversial topic. When they're scaless they don't have spikes or anything. They also need to be sun lotioned or they can get really bad skin diseases. It's also pretty hard for them to shed.
I don't know a ton about it, but what I do know it doesn't sound great....
@@e.g.2261 That is what silkback (silkie) bearded dragons are. They lack scales and are just smooth skinned. It leads to a lot of problems and they need special care as a result. I have heard there is even other issues due to the inbreeding involved in their creation so they can be more prone to mental issues or cancer.
I adopted a silkback from a breeder who accidentally produced him. They wanted to get him shipped out to me ASAP because it seems that he was a LOT of trouble to maintain. I'm an experienced bearded dragon keeper, so I knew what I was getting into. Lots of conflicting info on care, though, so I've had a bit of a learning experience with a scaleless/silkback.
Lots of time and money to maintain! But I love him dearly. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone except experienced keepers. Also: don't purchase silkbacks; rescue/adopt instead.
"...wake up, bask, get angry, and then eat, drink some and go to sleep." Is Stan my grandpa? I assume he's not drinking Victoria Bitter tho.
My beardie boy Mochi has a routine where he does laps around his enclosure, and whenever he gets to this one spot, he bobs for a bit. But I swear he knows when we start filming bc he's NEVER let us take a video of his bobbing.
Mochi is quite the character.

Omg I was literally just thinking about Stan the other day and how he’s always bobbing his head 💖
Yes olive oil is the most amazing thing for impaction, i was very new to keeping reptiles i was about 6 years old but i did know a lot about leopards before i took her on, her previous owner had her on sand and a red bulb and i didnt know anything about that until i noticed she wasnt eating or pooping, this continued for a whole winter and we searched the entire internet for answers until we found about impaction, we immediately took the oil and it saved her life. Use it if you see the symptoms. Edit:btw i changed out her bulb and substrate
Alex: Stan is probably my favorite animal in the house

Seeing where Stan came from and how he is now, it just makes me smile for that ole fellow. So cute.
Stan is my favorite reptile he reminds me of my Breaded dragon I miss him my grandparents thought I wasn’t ready😭😭but ya Stan is my favorite
Aww, he's a cutie! And right from the start I was thinking he looked small, so it made sense when you said his previous owner didn't really know what they were doing and he had MBD. He looks sweet, though. :) Also, NEVER would have guessed he was over 10 years old! WHOA! Pretty good for a slightly less well cared for beardie!
End of video club: love the Attack on Titan reference! ❤️❤️
Stan is the definition of grumpy old man. I love him so much.
Stan is an old man who yells at clouds on his lawn.
To be honest, Stan is probably my favorite reoccurring animal in your videos. It inspired me to try to adopt a rescue beardie when I was able to acquire my second reptile.
The real question is: is he Stanford or Stanley?
Hailey Warn he’s named after gruncle Stan from gravity falls so whichever gruncle stans full name is is also probobly stans name
But that’s the whole question. For the whole show he went by Stanford, but at the end it was revealed his name was Stanley

It is so heartening that folks like you exist. You've given this little guy a better, healthier life for his remaining days. And while you say he's angry, it's clear in the video that he loves you. Animals are smarter than we give them credit for being, and Stan knows you have given him real care. It's so cute how he climbs up on your shoulder. As for the tomato eating, why not? He's old, let him have hard cider all he wants! :-)

@14:20
Stan will end up being 19 years old before he passes. I can see it in his eyes, looks exactly like mine did. He passed while I was overseas, so I didn't get to mourn him, but that hurt as much as what I imagine a dog passing does.
Are scaleless bearded dragons the “silky back” varieties? If so, yes they are terrible.
I had to look them up, and it kind of looks like something you would breed if you didn't like beardies and wanted them to suffer just by living, much like toad line bulldogs.
@@Call-me-Al theyre absolutely terrible. A couple years back, my mom and i rescued one from a really shady pet shop. When we saw her she was gray and dull and just lifeless. She was missing toes, and the end of her tail. She was malnourished. She just looked terrible. I was already really into beardies, and had the general supplies we needed for her. We knew we had to take her, so we did! After a lot of love and patience, she is doing great now. her color is beautiful, she gets fresh food daily, her enclosure is beautiful, and she is a completely different beardie now. I like to use her as a good example of why silkie beardies should not exist. we love her, and i wouldnt get rid of her obviously. But it breaks my heart that she suffered for so long before we came along, and it breaks my heart that for so many "silky bearded dragons", they never do find that right family and just face a life of neglect. They should not be in the pet hobby, they should not be bred, they should be banned.
I listen to his voice like a podcast before I go to bed
i have a theory that Stan has Vietnam-esc flashbacks
We got a beardie in exactly the same condition as Stan was (without the clogged pores), about 4 years ago. she’s in great condition now and loves life.
stan just wanted to eat in front of a camera for the first time
I got my beardie as a shop reject at 4 months old. He has a really small stumpy tail and one of his eyes are droopy. The shop were giving him no vegetables and had him in a tiny enclosure with no enrichment. When I first met him he was skittish but as soon as he came home he was so unbelievably calm. Zeus is happily in a 240 gallon enclosure and his preferred colour of vegetable is green, orange and yellow of which I am so grateful for. He still wont eat vegetables from a bowl and will only eat handfed but I occasionally get moments where he will chase a dubia. Also I got him at about 5 inches at 4 months old. Hes now about 18 inches including his stumpy tail at 8 months so I'm hopeful for the future.
