    A long time ago when I was kid I would watch my dad vertical fish a bass jig off the bottom and catch flatheads at the dam on the river. People think I am crazy when I tell em. So I quit talking about it... glad to see people can see its not out of the realm of possibilities. Nice work Justin !!!!

    Somewhere, there should be a freaking statue erected to Justin Johnston, pioneer, innovator, and father of the modern catfishing era. Seriously, I thoroughly enjoyed that video. I've learned a technique that should substantially enhance my pursuit of our favorite species. No longer is it simply a game of bait up and wait. It can also be one of stalking and taking the action directly to the prey. Love it.

  • @BY504A

    That was a fun watch! Using the jig seems like a win win situation. You get to have the cut bait at the bottom and still can be catching fish when the cut bait isn't attracting the fish. You should have a lot less dead time using the jig. It's a blast watching you trying to drop the jig right on the fish. Take care and happy fishing.

    Here in Michigan I sometimes just long line troll crank baits (sometimes use a bottom bouncer ) mainly just playing catching drum- and I know you hate channel cats but a 10-15lb puts up a good scrapper and are fairly common on the crank baits-cats get bigger cause they will eat about anything,ha ha I love it ! Crappie Jigs are excellent for catfish at times. Mostly jigs with no spinner. They mimick a minnow.

  • @robertwilliamson6958
    @robertwilliamson6958 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is good stuff. Also like the methodical testing approach to no scents or tipped jigs. Surprised to see no leader on the braid. The braid can get scuffed and break much more easily if it gets in their mouth. Even a short leader and a swivel might be a good idea. Then with a giant you could grab said leader to help not break one off. This is great and really cool overall for sure.

  • @robertwilliamson6958
    @robertwilliamson6958 ปีที่แล้ว

    Come to think of it. I bet what you are seeing here is something I heard talked about in bass fishing. The larger and possibly lazier fish, are under the school. The little ones go through and catch some for themselves or may attack some and not get them, but those injured baitfish become extra easy targets for the larger fish under the school of bait when they flutter down under the main school. And/or, the more active fish are up higher, and the larger less active fish (but willing to take a super easy meal like the cutbait in their face close to bottom) are just hugging bottom not doing much. Would also explain what’s been seen on the electronics here.

  • @gregorygarrett1213

    I have been watching the jigging stuff. I am going to be trying some of this on Badin Lake in NC. Lots of diff depths on that lake. I don’t have your electronics but I can get baits to the needed depths where they are holding.

    Hey Justin. I'm just curious. So I'm itching to get out to my local river in the beginning of april to late march ( depending on when the rivers open up in my area) to see if I can hook some massive channel catfish. Do you think with the cold snaps we've been getting will change the mood of the fish ie cause them to stick to deaper water and move up shallow later than usual or do you think they'll stick to their normal feeding patterns? Or it could be they'll be aggressive early like they were last year. Anyway let me know your thoughts.

But yes things like that make conditions better but I've caught the best fish in the worse conditions and the worst fish in the best. It's all about having time on the water. My dad always said "it's fishing son, not catching, catching is just a bonus." Have a great time out there hope this helps.

      I always was taught every 1 was born left handed but some weren't smart enough to change!

    You'll improve on the live scope and they'll ban you from using it during tournaments. Technology will give you the species and the length of individual targets within 2 years. Almost shooting fish in a barrel.

      I am totally against the video game electronics. You are damaging the most important fish in the system, the breeding stock. Tournaments are starting to ban this type of electronics in Musky events. I hope more fishing tournaments do the same. Similar to hunting white tail deer with drones.

    Using a fish finder for recreational / sport fishing is like taking a test while looking up the answers in the back of the book.. then patting yourself on the back for what a good job you did. Seems silly. That's not how I remember the Joy of fishing as a kid . nice video, though.
