  • Daryl Beattie was a star of the Australian and 500cc GP racing scene for nearly 20 years.
He raced with some of the greatest riders the sport has ever seen, so when we had the opportunity to interview him on iRide we grabbed it with both hands.
We are very grateful to him for generously sharing his time with us. 🙏🙏

Love this guy, he may not think he is a legend but he IS, should have a corner named after him on the Island too.

Miller gets a corner for 4th and 5th in the championship while the team mate gets first and second.
Beattie gets nothing for a 3rd behind Swantz and Rainy and ahead of Doohan, then 2 years later a 2nd behind Doohan.

totally agree with you, a Legend and really the nicest bloke, nothing against Miller but Beattie gets nothing makes no sense@@stevegraham3817

Met Daz briefly when he came to the Classic races at Pukekohe with Kev Swantz. What a humble, gentleman. A real ACE. Flies under the radar, but an absolute credit to motorcycle racing and Aus.

It’s great to listen to Daryl talk about his career. He was a big part of the success of Grand Prix Racing in the 1990’s. A real talent and a wonderful person!

I enjoyed very much. Beattie has been one of the most appreciated pilot during the 90's in Europe. Greetings from Spain

Thanks for the video. I remember racing Darryl at Lakeside back when he was an up coming (14yr old??) Dad sponsored racer on a TZ350. And practicing with he and Mick Doohan at Surfers raceway when Mick was in 250 proddies. Everyone knew these 2 were bound for stardom, the talent is obvious. Shame that Darryl (and Mick) was injured out at the top of his game.

Hello from the States! Great interview. Great story about winning the RM50. We had the JR50 state side. Still a 2 stroke. It was the only good racing dirt bike in the states at the time I think(‘79/80). I had an Italjet 50 in ‘79. Light years ahead of most bikes we had stateside at the time. Anyways- Darryl came up to 500 GP fast and swam with the Sharks. Was a great racer. Loved watching him mix it up. He called the 500’s GP gutless! SMH…. And the toe truck crack, priceless! Thanks for sharing. Miss those days. Darryl seems like a great guy. Keep it real.

I've just stumbled across this 'chat'
I used to watch Daryll in the 500 GP's but never knew anything about him. What a great guy. Fantastic story and such a modest and honest view on his life. 🙌🙌 Thanks 👍👍

I could never understand why Honda had him racing the All-Japan 500 series then a single full year in World 500cc GP where he came 3rd, then let him go.

For me, he’s up there as one of Australia’s greatest sportsmen. An absolute legend and so humble. Very few people get to reach such a level of success in the field they choose. 🤘

Did Honda fired Daryl because they knew he could win with Doohan ? It was very strange...

very modest. good thing you're not selling yourself mate, because you are a deadset legend and you'd sell yourself way too cheaply. with your quality you'd excel today, no worries

Beatti certainly never reached his true potential. At the time I think he was a race winner but as for a 500cc champion I'm not sure but who knows. One thing for sure he was fast.
Nice bloke and far too modest for his own good.

Daryl has admitted he should have stayed with Honda. This issue was he finished 3rd and Honda wanted him in World Super bikes. Daryl didn't want this and took up an offer from Yamaha. He never felt comfortable on the bike. the injury didn't help. Cadalora was quite good and got 2 wins and second in the championship on the same bike. The Roberts team was quite complicated in that era. I think Beattie was offered the Honda V twin in the late 90's, however declined.

Honda treated Darryl like shit. When Ito was failing in the national championship the swapped Darryl with Ito because Japan championship was more important. Honda fucked him for championship racing. At the same time and reason they did that was because his 8hr races were legendary.

    • @nicethings2070
      @nicethings2070 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@StefanMedici Honda did the same to one or two other riders. Doohan may have had some more competition had things been a little different. Not saying he's not great though.
