Antique Fire Bell Restoration

  • I found this antique Faraday fire bell from circa 1907 on eBay and thought it would make a perfect restoration video. I haven't seen anyone else make a video like this before. For once I found a project that actually SHOULD be polished excessively. I thought it turned out really well. I apologize for the large gap between this video and my last. This one took a lot longer than I expected.

    I realize the contact on the hammer is arcing against the bottom post. No, the solenoid coils are not arcing. They are 100% working as intended. Apparently 110/120V is too much for this bell. I will probably use this with a doorbell transformer to step the voltage down if I use this in any sort of permanent application in the future.

    • @mred8002
      @mred8002 5 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      One I had used a 24v transformer with a doorbell button. Wouldn’t want 110v AC running on outside of the school where it was, let alone through a doorbell switch! I would have tied a knot in power cord as stress relief. Well done

      Nadia Fortune Yup. These were those thrice-damned bells that conditioned all us school kids to get to class, come in from recess, etc. many decades ago. Some were mounted outside, and just had the old heavy copper phone two-wire to power them, on a doorbell push-button. Wouldn’t want 110v there.

    • @canadianman000
      @canadianman000 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A lot of voltage at the time was probably 100v AC. could have been 50 or 60hz. Some systems ran at 25hz in 1907.

  • @Foof50

    I see this a lot and as an electrician, it bugs the hell out of me. First off, you need better wire strippers. Klein makes amazing sets and like $15. The big thing is not tightly braiding the wires as you pushed them through the opening and didn't look like you did it too well when wrapping around the posts. Two options are at your disposal. Either tin the wires prior to wrapping them around the posts and the braiding will stay intact, you can loop around a screw driver for a good bend. Second is mostly the one I use for light switches and such. Strip off the amount you want exposed, then cut an extra 1/8" and twist and move it to the end. This will tighten the braid and keep the ends from fraying. Either method will help a lot when wrapping around the posts and will keep the wires from squeezing out so much when you tighten it down.

      Thanks for the tips. Always nice to hear constructive criticism from people who are more knowledgeable than me. My soldering skills are essentially nonexistent, but I could probably handle pulling off what you described.
      I can't believe you didn't mention the massive green arcs every time the bell hammer hits the bottom post! I don't think this thing was designed for 110/120V as it was advertised!

    Its hard to say if it was actually used as a Fire bell. Or used for other things. These were sometimes placed in warehouses and Factories for when place would get Phonecalls or to signal for Lunch or quiting time instead of actually being used as a Fire Bell.
