    This is how we wore our braids back in the 90's. For MONTHS. It takes 12 years to put the style in so you best believe we are leaving it in for months.
    This 2 week mess is crap, esp with all the time and money. UH uh.

      @@marlak4203 Right! When your butt "falls asleep" and you can't sit still anymore...the memories of growing up black! People have gotten creative. I've seen videos where girls "refresh" their braids and they look brand new.

      @@ButAVapor Yes i have seen those too.
      I just did that with one of my braids and that is what was done back then too. You'd re-do the perimeter because that is the part that is most visible. . If you keep it moistened and wash it at least sometimes then your hair is good. It cuts down on the product buildup at the root if you can find some good products to use.

    God bless you Seun darling! Like you don't understand. As a woman that previously used to relax my hair and then also transitioned to natural, I personally choose to not do the big chop which granted now that I have been natural for a good couple years, I can see that, that probably was a mistake. However, I am not mad because personally I still would have made the same mistakes and probably more, given my urge to want to grow my hair long as fast as possible, had I went through with the big chop route. Through my natural hair journey I have learnt a lot and I cannot help but thank you so much Seun for taking us on your journey and teaching us about your findings from scientific studies (e.g. such as hygral fatigue).
    PS: Congratulations to you Seun for graduating! I hope to join you too in a couple years!
    Anyways, I think I have rambled on quite long enough now. Basically girl, before you I was watching natural hair videos from other people within the TH-cam community and there was just such an emphasis on the fact that your hair is moisturised if the curls are juicy bouncy and wet, you know with the LOC or LCO method. Thanks to you releasing your video on hygral fatigue and also me experiencing my hair literally melting in my hands due to hygral fatigue, I realised that there is a *very BIG BAD misconception within the natural hair community* of what moisturised hair is and if you watch this video th-cam.com/video/FdQnlQRlM2w/w-d-xo.html as well as Seun's pervious video on what hygral fatigue that is here th-cam.com/video/UXFe1VPGVTE/w-d-xo.html, you will see that your hair is actually moisturised when it is dry and it is dry when it has excessive amounts of water in it.
    Long story short after watching you take down this 3 month protective hairstyle, I then took out my 5 month old protective hairstyle (cornrows) 2 days ago (I absolutely do not recommend keeping your protective style in for that long, your girl was going through some things so ya know, I kind of forgot I have hair, 4c hair to be exact. It took me a whole 5hrs to finger detangle my hair! That's the pre-poo before the wash!) using predominantly coconut oil (for the added slip) and then leave in conditioner that I have which is African Pride Shea Miracle Leave-in conditioner. For my hair, I have learnt the hard way that it doesn't like to be damp or soaked in water too long, hence why I'd lather the hair up with coconut oil first and apply leave in only if my hair was just borderline crusty dry, to help soften it up so it's easier to detangle and also prolong/ prevent the chance of me ever having to experience hygral fatigue again.
    Prior to the method I stated above, I would have detangled/ pre-pooed my hair by wetting it first (or making it slightly damp), applying oil and conditioner to help detangle it. However, I vividly remember how weak my hair was after doing this. My hair literally felt like spaghetti and was breaking like crazy, because as I said prior my hair DOES NOT like water. This experience taught me that my hair absolutely doesn't like water, and detangling/ pre-pooing my hair this way gave me hygral fatigue.
    This comment is long, but if you have gotten to the end of this, I hope that my experience and what I have learnt helps you along your natural hair journey!
    Best wishes,
    Lucy 😊🤗❤️

    Nice growth there. Whe are at the same length so I will follow your method..why? Because I have similar hair, Low porosity and thin strands. But it grows out big like your hair. So hopefully we can retain length. That's always been a problem for me. I also much much older than you 56 years old and have been natural for over ten years. I long to grow length one day just to see what it feels like. Thanks for the video.

    3M without washing your hair? My scalp gets oily and itchy after a week. Who ever doesn't have sensitive scalp is lucky.
    My hair doesn't mind being washed often. I still retain length and don't have split ends or breakage. It's very interesting how different each head of hair is 😁

      Romans 10:9-10, 13 (KJV) That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
      For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
      For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

  • @aisham6819
    @aisham6819 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Guys we don’t always have to braid our hair to do protective styling you can also free form grow your hair letting it grow from Afro to locs and watch the growth! Less maintained. Plus protective style braids for a month or so on don’t work for everyone cuz some braids can thin out or weaken your hair.
    Locs free form with no retaliating strengthens and add thickness to your hair.

    • @SeunOkimi
      @SeunOkimi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Hey Aisha, yes, there are definitely lots of ways to approach protective styling!
      And if you want alternatives outside of braids or locs as well I talk about this more in my 'why protective styles aren't growing your hair' video! I also give more reasons as to why you could be seeing breakage from certain styles, what things can cause that to occur, and how to avoid that there

  • @tasheka1541
    @tasheka1541 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I recently did knotless braids and only took out the front after about two weeks (big maistake...should've taken the out sooner) after I did I styled it so it wasn't obvious and I added the oil regularly and now I don't have a bald patch at the front. As for knotless I'm not planning on putting in small knotless again because it literally tore out my hair but thanks to your tip of using leave-in it was to a minimum and even then I had to take it verrryyy slooowww so my hair didn't rip out more and that's not what normally happens when I get plait braids.

    • @SeunOkimi
      @SeunOkimi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Aw wow, I'm so sorry that happened to you. Yes, braids should never feel too tight or too heavy to where its pulling on your scalp or pulling your hair out. Though I'm glad you realized the mistake and can learn from it now. Maybe try simpler, bigger styles like twist without added hair for now until you get a better sense of what works best for you and your hair type. I also go deeper into things to avoid with protective styling in this video: th-cam.com/video/prk3NpC6yqI/w-d-xo.html I hope it may help as well
