It's great you are so gentle with the fish when you let them go. I can't stand seeing videos with trout being flung back in! Enjoy your videos, cheers for sharing.
That was a quality fish on the dry fly, well done Andy! Pretty good start to the season - you landed all the fish you hooked and only missed one take. You've got to love those dodgy weather forecasts. It was Youth Mentored Trout day on Saturday and the forecast said snow in the morning and clearing in the afternoon so Sam and I planned around that. Of course it was sunny in the morning and we fished in snow squalls in the afternoon. We only lasted a couple of hours till we were frozen, but we landed a few, so day#1 mission accomplished.
Definitely glad you did the video Andy, and it gives a true reflection of early season fishing. Appreciate the content because it is so "real" and not dolled up for TH-cam. And this time of the year, on a day with little or no hatch three fish is a good result, particularly because two of them were very decent fish.
Great video Andy! Beautiful river! Yes, three fish is plenty. In fact I would have watched if you had not caught any. That’s fishing! Keep up the great videos and thanks for posting!
Hi both,,great to see you coming to God's country again! The Usk is a great river and the March Brown hatch was HUGE the week before..sorry"...I would love to see how you would tackle a wet fly session on the Usk as I find it produces more fish than dry..great vid as usual regards Glynn
Very nice thanks. Don't worry about 'not enough fish' for a vlog. I blank so often (4 already this season) that it's reassuring to know that you don't always catch double figures. In fact it would be great to sea a day's fishing without a catch!
A nice video showing that there are hard fishing days for professionals too. Thanks for the tips on jigging streamers. And last, but not least: Congrats on catching first fish on dry fly in the season!
Great video Andy . I was there on Thursday, The MB hatch started early around 9 am , it was bubbling with surface activity until around midday then it just switched off . Then I couldn’t buy a fish. Still a beautiful place to be and just nice to be out on the river again.
Wow, 9am MB hatch, I've never heard of that before, that's really cool. Maybe that's it then, I just missed it, as I didn't get on the river until around midday. It is good to shake the cobwebs off isn't it?!
@@IBandAndyFishing it caught me by surprise, I was a quivering wreck trying to lace up my dry fly rod ! Sure is good to be back out, something completely mystical about the Usk browns . Keep posting the great content mate 🙏🏻
@@IBandAndyFishing was on clyde last year opening week and the biggest hatch of March browns came on and thought I had knocked it off not a single fish moving for them couldn't believe it
I went out last Saturday and caught 12 brownies averaging around 8” long from a small fairly low stream. Weather was beautiful last Saturday (unlike today)
Hi Andy nice to see another great video! I bought a Sage 10.3 ft. 3 wt. rod could i use that for small streamers? Also can i use an indicator or use it with a dry dropper if i change spools and use regular 3 wt. Line? Please tell IB i was asking for her.
Nice fish. Amazing isn’t it? They were hammering maggots on the Dove on last day of coarse season (had 21 brownies while I was grayling fishing) but now they’ve gone all coy! Must have a go at streamer fishing 😉
Hi Ian, thanks for the post. Always found it a lot more difficult to fish with a fly in waters where the fish have been fed and now tend to avoid them during Grayling season. Hopefully the trout will switch on soon. Fished high up on the Dove system last weekend and caught plenty of grayling, dry and wet fly but no sign of a BT and this stretch is not fished with maggots. Have caught BT there at same time in previous years, so perhaps they are a little behind even though spring seems further forward this year. Tight lines.
Hi Andy, thanks for the vlog and info within. I go to the Usk once or twice a year and have also experienced the changeable weather and fish behaviour. I've had some great days and some disappointing ones also; maybe this is part of the beauty of fishing this river. Just as a matter of interest, did you fish the beat where you were camped and if so did you cross the river before you started? Looking forward to seeing what happened on your second day, good luck for the rest of the season.
Hi David, it's definitely just a product of the time of year, things can be really hit and miss this early in the season. I did fish where I was camped yes, there is a place to cross safely about a quarter of the way up the beat
@@IBandAndyFishing Hi Andy, thanks for the reply. I usually fish the same beat a couple of times a year, with a couple of friends. I'm the only one of us that has fished from the same bank that you started from, so am very pleased to get an indirect heads up from you on this. I'm usually fishing later in the year and this bank can get very overgrown with brambles and if the river is up a bit, offers far fewer safe routes of access so has elements of jungle warfare about it but I'm very encouraged that you have identified some very good water that can only be fished effectively from this side. I don't camp there, so I usually work my way down and up from the top of the beat. I'll look out for the crossing point when I'm next there. Thanks again for your valuable perspective.
A video showing how to fish spiders would be a good watch. Great video as always. I had the same fate on the swale yesterday. 1 hour window then 'flogging a dead horse'
Hi Thomas! Yes I did, we did a challenge to tie a fly on the bank and catch on it, I had a brain fart and thought I had lost a fly but it was still in the vice!

Thanks Mike, much appreciated!
Good to see you again Andy. Season doesn’t start yet here on the chalkstreams, but looking forward to it.
You'll be ready for them when the season begins though!
Lovely start to the season, worth the four hour drive!
Cheers bud! Yeah I thought so too 👍👍
Can’t beat abit of dry fly fishing 🎣
It really was just a little bit of dry fly fishing. Plenty more risers in part two!

Stunning brown on the Dry Andy 👍
Cant ask for more than that in March.
If we caught lots every time,we would soon get bored.

thank you so much! I was thrilled with that first fish being on a dry, that really meant a lot to me!

Cracking video Andy, wouldn't fancy camping in mid March though 🥶 brave man, or was it worth it to escape from I.B for a few days ? 😂😂
It's a bit of a tradition, the early season camping. It helps me appreciate the rest of the summer. Its character building! 😂😂

These are my own ties bud, I might do a video on these if there's enough interest though!

Andy, what size do you do you streamers?
Mate you need a bigger tent. Be comfy.
The small tent gets warm/stays warm more efficiently. Plus, I like my tent! 😂😂

confirmed, andy drives like a granny... 3 hours, turned into 4 hour journey... Good to see some bonny fish though..
