Fun fact, ocarina of time any% doesn't actually use ACE anymore because we found something equally broken that lets us credit warp faster (the ability to just edit memory directly). Actually, pokemon itself is similar - there is an ACE credits warp in Red, but using it is SLOWER than just using save corruption and party overflow to warp to the end of the game.

Arbitrary Code Execution is so ridiculous. "The game didn't know what was happening, so it just chose a completely different number to read instead." What even.
This is the exact mode that someone uses to exploit holes in operating systems running on iPhones and Android or in web browsers. LiveOverflow has great series on this.
This stuff generally involves invalid lengths. So the game tries to read extra data, but that extra data is actually a completely different thing that happens to be stored nearby. This stuff happens outside of video games, for example in the Heartbleed exploit,
I would never even consider attempting a real speedrun of any game, but I have so much admiration for people who do and have watched hundreds of hours of speed runs of many different games. It’s truly amazing that people are still discovering glitches in games that are so old and have been run for over a decade.
Truly amazing for speedrunners to have an ACE setup within the game. Also nice for casual glitch-users, because FRLG ACE was locked behind being able to transfer glitch eggs\moves over from Emerald.

You can give abra into the daycare with all the extra steps up to orania city and the s.s Anne this should be 3-4 potentially extra level before the actual leveling begins for mr.mime
Good idea, but you access the route where you trade for Mr Mime from Diglett Tunnel in Vermillion City while the Daycare is back on the Route south of Cerulean City. So you’d have to drop off Abra, do S.S. Anne, then backtrack to Cerulean to pick up Abra before returning to Vermillion again to get to where the Mr Mike trade is. So instead of Cerulean > SS Anne > Mr Mime, it becomes Cerulean > SS Anne > Cerulean > Vermillion > Mr Mime. For just a few levels when you’re on the cusp of duplicating Rare Candies anyway, it probably isn’t worth it unfortunately.
I always thought Game Freak should have made MissingNo an official Pokémon. It could have been a Ghost Type that resembles when you lost something but have no idea it’s missing. Perhaps after set number of level ups a random item from you inventory would go missing and MissingNo will eventually evolve taking the form of that item. A second typing could be gained based on what it is: berries or plants results in a grass ghost type, a liquid like freshwater or lemonade results in a water ghost type, a Pokéball or other metallic item will result in a steel ghost type, and others just stay pure Ghost Type.
I've seen people claiming that the new mail glitch is the one that was just found, the Mr Mime swap was the newest one found in 20 years, and now this. I feel like people are just breaking this game over and over again now, and I'm genuinely curious about which way is faster now.

I think the best example of what ACE can do is MrWint's TAS of Pokemon Yellow. With it beeing a tool assisted run, he changes the game in a way that allows him to literally stream code via the buttons, which the game immediately executes.
I found one glitch in Leaf Green, as far as I can tell the only thing that triggered it was beating the elite four over and over. But what happened was there were 2 other player characters in the elite four room, one standing out of bounds turning like an NPC looking for a battle.
Yep! It's a very similar concept, I'm not sure exactly how the emerald glitch is executed, but FRLG swaps the EVs with the Pokemon species data to create the glitched mon.
Wondering this as well, as teleporting to Naval Rock and Birth Island in FRLG (and shiny hunting with SRs there) would be more ideal than RAs in Emerald at those locations.
Missingno was my first contact with performing a ritual to contact and obscure creature, to obtain infinite wealth with terrible unintended consequences.
And since it's an ACE, I'm sure someone will eventually turn it into something like the OoT Triforce% run or that Pokemon Yellow 0:00 any% TAS that turns into Gold, Tetris, Link's Awakening, Mario, Portal and Spongebob.

Can anyone confirm this for me? When I was a child I was playing silver through Pokémon stadium 2. I had a level 12 wooper and I defeated a level 14 pidgy at the bug contest area. My wooper leveled all the way to 100. Is this a know glitch? I could never replicate it. My only other memory is that I started with cyndaquil and I had a bellsprout as well. Thanks!
I actually have a similar-ish story. Was training a Pupitar on the route just below Blackthorn and ran into one of the '?????' glitchmons in the grass. Was also playing via Stadium 2. I think the Transfer Pak might just be a finicky POS and whenever it doesnt fail outright and boot you to the error screen, stuff can happen haha
*Probably* just a dirty connector on the cartridge or the Transfer Pak. Usually it errors out, but if it breaks connection at precisely the right moment it should read corrupted data, and the old GBC games barely had any data integrity checks.

Merrp is a massive expert at Pokemon Emerald. And since this Box renaming + Pokemon corruption is a big part of certain Emerald Glitched Speedruns, she was able to easily figure out which Box names would work for FRLG!

In fire red years ago I encountered an oddish outside fuschia city that used transform and turned into a green block and crashed my game and no one ever believed me apart from my brother as I showed him the frozen game
It took 15+ years, but fire red & leaf green (and by extension all games from gen 1-5) finally have a faster english glitched category... Wait a minute
FRLG have got to be the best programmed games Game Freak has ever produced. It took nearly 20 years to crack them open to glitching and it also took a significant amount of time to develop strategies to reliably manipulate the RNG in those games as well. I don't think there's any other Game Freak game as unbreakable as these ones
i mean, the remote code execution as a feature in gen3 using GC-GBA link will probably never be allowed in speedruns (literally get code exec as soon as you poweron the game!), so I guess this is the second best solution

How do speed runners find these glitches. How do they figure out exactly what EVs the mime needs plus why those specific names for boxes 1-3? How do people take the steps to think I need to give all 6 pokemon mail then take the mail back on all but one pokemon and then move the mime from box 3 to 1 and boom that glitches the game to the end. Insane that people figure this stuff out

OoT speed runs may change soon due to the ability to load most maps in other maps. Though ace may still be faster.

How do speed runners find these glitches. How do they figure out exactly what EVs the mime needs plus why those specific names for boxes 1-3? How do people take the steps to think I need to give all 6 pokemon mail then take the mail back on all but one pokemon and then move the mime from box 3 to 1 and boom that glitches the game to the end. Insane that people figure this stuff out
